Redmayne Reverse Ferret

Trending on twitter now. Apparently he's had a mysterious change of heart about burning the witch at about the same time as the DfE changed their guidelines for schools and the government kicked changes to the GRA into touch. Oh, and the JKR film franchise that pays his bills is revving up on the publicity circuit again.

Link to the article in LGBTQNation (I hadn't heard of it either) below, but to avoid giving them the clicks I'll C+P the highlights.

He was so upset that Rowling was facing criticism for her anti-transgender tweets and her 3700-word rambling diatribe against transgender people that he sent her a personal note of support, he said.

Redmayne played transgender painter Lili Elbe in the movie The Danish Girl, even though he is neither a woman nor a transgender person. He was nominated for the Oscar for “Best Actor” for his work in the film.

“As Lili, he performs womanhood by way of stereotype.”

He did not win the Oscar that year.

Eddie Redmayne joins Daniel Radcliffe in opposing JK Rowling's trans comments June headline

Eddie Redmayne stands up for J.K. Rowling against internet “vitriol” September 28th headline.

Make your fucking reverse ferreting mind up Eddie

Escapeplanning · 28/09/2020 23:15

Eddie Redmayne – a cisgender man

How funny.

Dogman · 28/09/2020 23:15

Pillory in public.
Support in private.
Cowardly.

NotEvenTheKing · 28/09/2020 23:16

He's a fool, but I do think these statements condemning JKR were complete PR moves. Said with little thought, quickly. Not that I am defending him, I'm just unsure if he truly understood what was actually happening.

But that article is a joke. So poorly written, and so clearly biased.

Smellbellina · 28/09/2020 23:17

He’s such a disappointment

FloralBunting · 28/09/2020 23:19

lolololololololololol.

And you know what? Rowling will be utterly gracious to him, I have no doubt, because she is a class act.

I'm a base fishwife, though, so I'm quite happy to point and laugh at the self serving turncoat exposed for the wimp he is. That's a joy.

MadameButterface · 28/09/2020 23:23

I think it’s possible to take issue with what someone says but also condemn death threats against them, there seems to be little room for nuance on either side of this though.

MadameButterface · 28/09/2020 23:25

And if he has changed his position on where he stands on this, good luck winning hearts and minds calling people who reconsider the matter self serving turncoat wimps tho

SerenityNowwwww · 28/09/2020 23:25

Did he do a “I’m sorry if... but...”? Sorry-not-sorry-dont-cancel-me-pleeeeeeeeese?

yourhairiswinterfire · 28/09/2020 23:26

It's absolutely doing my head in how dense they're being.

You can support trans people and ALSO be absolutely disgusted at a woman being piled on by thousands of people. And no, the abuse isn't justified because she's rich and white Hmm

You're either with them on absolutely everything, or you're 100% against them. What a miserable way to live, thinking someone disagreeing with you is actually, literally attacking you.

MadameButterface · 28/09/2020 23:30

“ You're either with them on absolutely everything, or you're 100% against them.“

Yes, it’s really unhelpful when people become that entrenched in their views isn’t it

FloralBunting · 28/09/2020 23:30

Yes, I'm being very rude. I will of course win many more hearts and minds by fulsomely thanking the nice man for thinking of his career. Thanks for the heads up. I'm sure feminism will be better for it.

FloralBunting · 28/09/2020 23:32

I'm not entrenched. Well done Ed, you've remembered that women matter and are allowed to speak. Good lad. I'm still going to laugh at you though, big meanie that I am.

DeliciouslyFemale · 28/09/2020 23:32

Bollocks is it because he’s ‘reconsidered’. He joined in the slandering of her and has only done a reverse ferret because the government decision was not what he and others expected. He’s suddenly realised that outside his privileged bubble, that the public have had enough of women being shit on. He’s also seen the massive support behind JK and has done a fucking somersault straight over that fence.

Having a change of heart is very common amongst many people, when it comes to this issue, but they don’t normally start by supporting and encouraging the abuse of others.

FreeGlib · 28/09/2020 23:33

Didn't he get his arsed handed to him when he first waded in for stealing a role from a trans woman because acting is transphobic?

Stripesgalore · 28/09/2020 23:35

He is presumably being told what stance to take by an agent, and the stance has changed because the political climate is changing.

I like his acting, but I doubt he has much political commitment to anything anyway.

SerenityNowwwww · 28/09/2020 23:35

I don’t think he did at the time when the film was out did he? It wasn’t really ‘a thing’ then to insist that and actor didn’t act stuff... I’m looking forward to the remake of Blade then.

AbsintheFriends · 28/09/2020 23:35

I think it’s possible to take issue with what someone says but also condemn death threats against them

I'm not sure if he specified what exactly he took issue with in JKR's eminently reasonable, well-argued essay about her personal experience. I think he was possibly just parroting lines that he thought would make him popular, and believed that having played a transwoman gave him some kind of affinity with the trans community.

Schoolboy error, Eddie.

Eddie Redmayne joins list of Harry Potter stars berating JK Rowling.
Eddie Redmayne has previously faced criticism for accepting the role of a trans woman, Lili Elbe, in The Danish Girl. The film depicted her transition and journey in becoming the first woman to undergo gender affirming surgery.

Prick News

DeliciouslyFemale · 28/09/2020 23:40

he performs womanhood by way of stereotype.

Yeah, really fucking annoying when that happens. 😒

NotTerfNorCis · 28/09/2020 23:41

Stephen King has also plugged JKR's new book on Twitter, and is getting flack from TRAs.

I seem to remember he supported JKR initially, she thanked him, then he lost his nerve. Looks like he's found it again.

DeliciouslyFemale · 28/09/2020 23:43

Stephen King can fuck off too. He really shat on JKR and he’s going to have to do more than plug her book, to ever regain any self respect.

Melroses · 28/09/2020 23:44

I'm all for them all finding their nerves again. Silly to lose them.

Presumably there are more films to be made?

SerenityNowwwww · 28/09/2020 23:45

He can take a running jump too. Philip Pullman was on the fence and a bit huffy when he was asked if he would sign the letter:

Oh but he would have - but hadn’t been asked to, he said
‘There’s still time’ people told him
Errrrr, oh no, I’d love to - but I havent read it!

But you can read it in the newspaper...

Then he got a skelf in his backside, slid off the fence, telling people to piss off when they took the Mickey...

Not quite the personality I was expecting from a writer of children’s book.
