Trending on twitter now. Apparently he's had a mysterious change of heart about burning the witch at about the same time as the DfE changed their guidelines for schools and the government kicked changes to the GRA into touch. Oh, and the JKR film franchise that pays his bills is revving up on the publicity circuit again.

OP posts:

The man needs money. He will shoot the film and then feign faux regret when he’s cashed the cheque... or maybe not depending on which way the wind is blowing. Wish washy.

yourhairiswinterfire · 28/09/2020 23:48

I seem to remember he supported JKR initially, she thanked him, then he lost his nerve. Looks like he's found it again.

Iirc, I think he called out the abuse, and was then asked repeatedly whether he thought transwomen were women, so he finally said TWAW.

I guess we'll never know if he thinks transmen are men, being as no one though to ask, 'cause...well, we know why. Same goes for Daniel Radcliffe, who was oh so concerned about trans people, yet forgot to mention them in his statement.

TwoDrifters2 · 28/09/2020 23:49

Nice that he’s promoting the book. Shame he misspelled Robin’s surname.

TwoDrifters2 · 28/09/2020 23:50

Oh I see he did correct himself. As you were. I realise there are bigger issues afoot. Smile

JKRowlingIsMyQueen · 28/09/2020 23:53

His performance in The Danish Girl was a stereotyped sexist drivel, he's lucky the film didn't came out now. His whole way of expressing the character is now a "woman" was to blink seductively and make gentle, feminine movements with his hands.

Davros · 29/09/2020 00:14

“ You're either with them on absolutely everything, or you're 100% against them.
This is a version of the old communist mantra, "you're either with us or agin us"

CoolYourBeansMySon · 29/09/2020 00:14

he’s approximating femininity itself

Sounds familiar...

Cailleach1 · 29/09/2020 00:14

Spineless gobshite.

Did they in turn nick it from Jesus?
Dogma, religion ...same old, same old.

TBHno · 29/09/2020 00:20

What a weasel. He doesn't care about women or trans people; he only cares about making himself look good.

ErrolTheDragon · 29/09/2020 00:21

Anyway, I doubt that Redmayne's altered position was in any way related to DfE guidance - much more likely because names he respected showed up on a Times letter, I think. A cooler gang than the Harry Potter kids.

StillNotAGirl · 29/09/2020 00:36

I'm not going to think worse of someone for admitting they were wrong and coming out in support now. The more that do that the better

ErrolTheDragon · 29/09/2020 01:05

Sure - better late than never and the more the merrier.

BlackForestCake · 29/09/2020 01:05

Remember Rowling herself back-tracked when she was first attacked.

The more people who come forward, the better. Some cave in, then find courage again. Everyone who speaks out encourages others.

ErrolTheDragon · 29/09/2020 01:13

Some go away and find out what's going on (eg Martina Navratilova), and come back knowing what's what. I'd take a guess that's what JK was doing, and then keeping her powder dry until the time was right to weigh in.

wellbehavedwomen · 29/09/2020 01:18

I went to find what was actually said, and this traces back to a Daily Mail interview, that says the following:

Another thing he stood up for was transgender rights, making a statement in support following comments by J.K. Rowling, whom he knows through playing Newt Scamander in her Fantastic Beasts films. (He's back on set at the moment, shooting a third movie.)

He said he has many 'trans friends and colleagues' who are 'having their human rights challenged around the world and facing discrimination on a daily basis'.

Though he disagreed with Rowling's comments on the issue, he was alarmed by the 'vitriol' hurled at her on social media, which he termed 'absolutely disgusting', and which prompted him to write her a private note.

However, Redmayne felt that the insults to trans people on social media is 'equally disgusting'.

He said: 'Similarly, there continues to be a hideous torrent of abuse towards trans people online and out in the world that is devastating.'

I don't disagree with him on that. I just think it's a shame nobody's noticed that it isn't gender critical women abusing trans people. It's aggressive and abusive men. And they're abusing women just as much, and killing them exponentially more - but nobody seems to care very much, do they? Funny, that.

At all events, it's not a reverse ferret. He's just agreed that the level of pile-on she had wasn't okay, despite being part of it, now the tide is turning somewhat - in the UK, at least.

Doyoumind · 29/09/2020 01:40

From the reaction on twitter, he's just made things worse for himself. I used to like him but I'll never respect him again after the way he stabbed JKR in the back.

Graphista · 29/09/2020 01:53

Have always loathed this guy, he's a shit actor who only got the breaks he did due to WHO he and his family know (he's an Eton boy who had Prince William as a classmate apparently, but his family are generally very privileged and known in that set) but I mean seriously what 33 year old actor who hasn't appeared in anything that successful or profound gets an OBE for drama?!) and he's made some appalling comments on social and political issues not just this one, and whenever I've seen him on a chat show I've had to turn off cos he gives the fucking creeps!

Well now I feel justified!

He has been revealed for the self serving, ill informed, stone throwing, misogynist hypocrite he is!

TheHeartbeat · 29/09/2020 03:08

Hey he’s actually exposing Twitter this way!

Maybe the others will finally see how unreasonable they really are.

Fromage · 29/09/2020 03:37

@Cailleach1

Spineless gobshite.
My thoughts exactly.

Do you mean the Middle Aged moment comment? That was her publicist not her
SunsetBeetch · 29/09/2020 06:31

As an aside, is there an LGBT publication left that doesn't produce bitchy, hyperbolic clickbait and/or believes that lesbian sex can involve penises?

Nvm. I was forgetting about After Ellen.
TweeBree · 29/09/2020 07:01

He's still linked with Rowling on the next Fantastic Beasts movie so he'll have been told to adopt a more sympathetic approach. I doubt he cares otherwise.

Quillink · 29/09/2020 07:10

I congratulate anyone who thinks this issue through and changes their mind. There will be thousands who do and who regret their previous behaviour.

Not sure what has happened to Eddie. Perhaps he is beginning to see nuance where previously there was only black and white?
