Now in Salt Lake City, Utah.

twitter.com/christophelston/status/1309685206283030528?s=21

‘ Salt Lake City loves JK Rowling! ❤️

Thank you to our new friend who has decided to take a stand for JK, for women and children, and for the State of Utah.

Sir, you are the best. Those 15 boards throughout the State have never looked so good!’ 26/9/20

Apparently the San Francisco billboard is was up today and seen by 1/2 million drivers.

And they are going up in about more 40 locations in the USA according to Chris.

Thank you Chris and the donors. I think there is a bit of crowd funding happening too.

Taking down the one at Waverley wasn't the best of moves, was it? Just made people more determined Grin

The momentum for women's rights is unstoppable. Cheers to JKR and all her supporters.

oh wow ! this has spread from Edinburgh! yay!
WarOnWomen · 26/09/2020 23:37

Chris is talking about doing an advert on TV for Super Bowl

PhoebeSnow · 26/09/2020 23:41

It absolutely brilliant and I dearly hope JKR knows about all of these. Please can someone make a compilation of all the bill boards at some point. A Super Bowl advert would be stunning, a total up yours to the haters,

PhoebeSnow · 26/09/2020 23:44

Super Bowl tends to be in February I think so plenty of time for the money to be raised

BatShite · 26/09/2020 23:49

Spreading exponentially now it seems. That prase has been a bad thing for so long, but fits quite well here, in good news Grin

calllaaalllaaammma · 27/09/2020 00:13

It's good to see a fightback in the United States against gender ideology.
The US has never had any mainstream coverage of the GC position in national newspapers that happened here (except the Guardian).
Perhaps this will start a conversation.

bettybeans · 27/09/2020 03:01

I love this a whole lot but I'm also a little nervy about making love for JKR synonymous with a broad set of political ideas, some of which she will agree with and some that she perhaps won't. It takes her agency away to some extent. She's given up a whole lot to support women who weren't being heard and that's great, but we shouldn't exploit that too much or take advantage of it. She speaks for herself and it's so powerful when she does, there's ways to build on that without just attaching her name to it. I worry that she'll be forced to retreat if/when she loses control of how her name is being used.

That's my thoughts on it.

DancelikeEmmaGoldman · 27/09/2020 03:17

I’d agree with that bettybeans.

The man responsible for organising them is already tweeting about stressful this all is and how much hate he’s getting (gosh). And about arguing with feminists. I’m hoping it’s not all going to end in tears.

DryHeave · 27/09/2020 05:26

He should hand it back to Posie in that case.

quixote9 · 27/09/2020 05:26

Wonderful to hear this! In general, the US situation seemed hopeless, so it's really heartening to see signs of life.

@bettybeans yes I wondered about this too,

Thread: AIBU - to think the I heart JKR brand is using her identity, outside of her control?
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/4021170-AIBU-to-think-the-I-heart-JKR-brand-is-using-her-identity-outside-of-her-control

you're spot on...particularly using her brand for ideas she might not agree with

I love the show of support
I love the speaking up
BUT
I think new branding is needed to represent this whole thing.... if all the amazing heroines came up with new branding for the cause, I'd happily donate to make it happen

FindTheTruth · 27/09/2020 06:35

someone in the thread's saying the Superbowl is next.

Yes, I agree.

JKR's essay was so nuanced and sensible, I don't like the thought of her name becoming associated with some less palatable ideas. I'm nervous about the Superbowl plan. American political ads are not known for their gentleness and subtlety. I just hope JKR is shown as standing up for women and children, not as anti-trans.

I wish more celebrities would speak up and relieve her of the burden of being the figurehead for this movement.

I guess if it gets people talking and actually reading her essay that's a good thing.

Highfalutinlootin · 27/09/2020 07:24

If Posie wanted to do this or had the funding behind her or bandwidth, I'm sure she'd be doing it. The guy doing this talks about all the organizing he's doing to get this done. No one else got out and did that, so it's easy to say another group or individual should go do it, but the truth is, they could have, and no one did. I'd rather have the ads than not, personally!

I really hope more women will see these and just start doing more campaigns ourselves. We should make our own billboards, ads etc. with other, more nuanced messages. Why isn't anyone doing it?

PearPickingPorky · 27/09/2020 07:45

I am nervous about it.

I'm nervous that a man is taking control of it. A man who is never knew of before he did.

Also Amy Hamm (spelling? Preta6 on twitter) seemed to bow out very quickly and I'm worried why.

There’s something bothering me too but I can’t put my finger on it. Who is this guy? The first I heard of him was when the billboard was put up in Vancouver and now he is all over this. Something’s not quite right.
DancelikeEmmaGoldman · 27/09/2020 07:53

Not quite as high profile, but a start.

I noticed that too.

I suppose all will be made clearer in time.

I think the dam wall has sprung a leak, and opposition is starting to trickle down. There’s always a point in social movement where the message is diluted and standard-bearers way downstream, take up the fight. I think that can be frustrating for women who’ve been in the fight from the beginning, but a flood which is shallow and a bit muddy will reach more people than a pristine pool.

There's been another poster on here in recent days lecturing us about how wrong it is for Harry to have taken his case and clutching their pearls about feminists getting in with the wrong crowd.
So although I actually agree with people's concerns about the USA posters, it is inevitable that as the general public get hold of the outrages, lots of people who I/we don't normally agree with will get involved. But that's how democracy works.
