Labour continuing to support self-declaration

Apologies if this has already been mentioned but the official Labour Twitter account tweeted this earlier today:
It is deeply disappointing that the government has let trans people down and dropped its plans to reform the Gender Recognition Act.
Labour is committed to equality and we continue to support updating the GRA to introduce self-declaration for trans people.

It’s been mentioned in a few threads but deserves a thread of its own as I’m sure Labour has ppl watching this board

Labour will not get my vote back until they drop this

Polynerd · 24/09/2020 17:55

I want to cry. What are you supposed to do if you are economically on the left but also believe that women need private spaces?

Polynerd · 24/09/2020 17:56

Keir Starmer is so down on so many things associated with Corbynism but clearly gives zero shits about women's rights.

They need to completely stop demanding we pretend male people can somehow become female people.

yourhairiswinterfire · 24/09/2020 18:01

They must really like losing.

Mollyollydolly · 24/09/2020 18:02

I would suspect Starmer will be pissed off about that tweet, that he wants it to quietly melt away. However, as a member, if they continue down this route, they can sod right off. We're achieving more with grass roots groups anyway. This week has been a brilliant week - we don't need them. Shame it will leave us with Tory governments forever though. They're killing the left.

northstars · 24/09/2020 18:04

Labour has been such a disappointment. I’ve always voted for them, but can’t possibly if they continue down this path.

Do you think? If that was the case would they quietly delete it...? Might be worth watching out for.

I find this hard to cope with too.

highame · 24/09/2020 18:07

The meaning of equality is easy, if you're gay, disabled, black etc it is easy if you are trans too, but it is not easy if trans rights trump women's rights which they must, that puts equalities in conflict.

Labour, I do not consent, nor does the red wall (if you care to ballot them)

Another spoiled ballot hey hoh!

GalOopNorth · 24/09/2020 18:07

Same. I have always been a Labour voter, but I can’t continue to vote for them if they insist on dismantling sex based rights.

Polynerd · 24/09/2020 18:07

Although they have also posted this one...

Incredible that letting 0.01% of the population down is somehow seen as worse than letting down 51% isn’t it.

highame · 24/09/2020 18:10

Lets see what the front bench has to say. Have any of them said anything at all?

DaisiesandButtercups · 24/09/2020 18:11

So disappointing, I had really hoped that they might be tentatively moving towards supporting women. I was willing to believe that silence was not misogyny, to give them the benefit of the doubt... if they are continuing to abandon women then no doubt women will continue to abandon them.

Sad
Kazakaren · 24/09/2020 18:11

Oh well, I doubt they'll get in again. Life long labour supporter here. I won't be voting for them again.

Well he's deluded if he thinks that's going to happen.

Women know we've won a battle with self ID but the war goes on. We still need to purge this ideology from govt bodies and corporates who are misinterpreting the law.

Many of his own woke MP's are committed to self ID - they won't shut up.

The Conservatives have made their play - it's not all I wanted but it's a step in the right direction.

Starmer will have to declare his hand at some point because whilst the TRA lobby might support them only because they are a better option than the Conservatives but being "quiet", women want an unequivocal rejection of self ID and there's no way I'm voting for them until I get this.

Tootsweets23 · 24/09/2020 18:15

I suggest people keep posting that they won't vote labour on this thread and then it gets sent to labour HQ and KS. It is electoral suicide to double down, and also morally fucked to keep saying you don't give a shit about women's rights. Hard to keep taking the high ground against corbynism and the tories when you throw 50% of the population under the bus.

Poor old KS, all his effort over the next X years, and yet it is all for nought as this one position will lose him the election.

GoodyWoolf · 24/09/2020 18:17

I certainly won’t vote for them again while this is their policy. I hope they get a lot of feedback from women to say similar.

Codexdivinchi · 24/09/2020 18:19

Their eyes are fixed firmly on the Millennials. Many of them who don’t even vote now but will in a few years. Labour know they won’t win anytime soon because of the shit show it’s been recently so are just playing the long game.

The Millennial generation will really fuck women over. Girls just don’t accept that women have had to fight for the right that they casually have now. I know many young girls who absolutely deny that there is a wage ceiling, think that TWAW ect..

It’s depressing.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 24/09/2020 18:21

I shall continue to be an ex member of of the Labour Party then.

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 24/09/2020 18:22

I'm only typing this because while I'm at the computer I can't reach the wall to bang my head against. So I'll keep typing until the urge recedes and I'll just sit and quietly weep. Plus the simple activity of typing blots out the picture in my head of endless Tory governments from here to infinity....

Mollyollydolly · 24/09/2020 18:22

What's so disappointing is the Truss statement was so measured and fair and most people will see this. Labour just don't seem to understand how most of the population think. There's so many things they can attack the tories on and they choose the subject where the vast majority think Truss has been very sensible. Insane.

LouiseBelchersBunnyEars · 24/09/2020 18:22

At least now people can drop the delusion that Keir Starmer is secretly GC, and trying to work the inside. Labour are fucked

Mollyollydolly · 24/09/2020 18:22

Oh and meanwhile Stelle Creasy still blocking women talking about misogyny on twitter. You couldn't make it up.
