Labour continuing to support self-declaration

Apologies if this has already been mentioned but the official Labour Twitter account tweeted this earlier today:
It is deeply disappointing that the government has let trans people down and dropped its plans to reform the Gender Recognition Act.
Labour is committed to equality and we continue to support updating the GRA to introduce self-declaration for trans people.

I would add my friends that I know are TWAW are labour voters, but almost certainly wouldn't change that even if Labour didn't back self ID. They vote Labour for mainly left leaning economic reasons, as did I.
It's an issue that turns their existing voters off IMO but doesn't attract any new ones. Business as usual for the labour these days...

Pepperwort · 24/09/2020 20:01

I’m disgusted by Labour. Like so many asserted “nice” people they are up their own arse and can no longer see any reality or have any awareness of their core functions. My family was a traditional Labour family; I have always voted left of centre; my convictions are firmly socialist. But until this nonsense stops I’m another politically homeless non-voter.

Pepperwort · 24/09/2020 20:02

ps I did write to myMP and tell her this. Response was essentially that they didn’t care.

ArabellaScott · 24/09/2020 20:04

Oh, well.

anotherhumanfemale · 24/09/2020 20:10

Have Labour read the Mermaids response? Do they realise that they're sounding more like Mermaids than Mermaids?! Of Stonewall?

Utter insanity and they're making themselves look like a bunch of idiots. If you can't understand the most fundamentals of biology, how on Earth are we supposed to trust you to run an actual country? You'd think it would be a PR disaster when you make The Tories, "run" by Boris, look better and more sensible than you.

JiggeryWokery · 24/09/2020 20:11

I'm another one who has always voted Labour or Lib Dem, and spoiled my ballot at the last election because of this issue.

We'd be better off joining the Conservative party and voting for a GC candidate whenever the next leadership contest arises (only half joking).

PotholeParadise · 24/09/2020 20:12

@BlackForestCake

I know that some genderists would like Labour to take an even harder line, but it's still remarkable that Labour is standing up much more strongly for transgenderism that it ever has done for striking workers, refugees or benefit claimants.
This.

I have beeen very disappointed in Labour's position on all those. I assumed they chose to compromise for the sake of winning votes.

But I don't think this is a net vote-winner, so why?

Labour, I'm disappointed in you.

ArabellaScott · 24/09/2020 20:17

they might want to have a look at the ratio.

Why indeed. It helps to push women back out of the jobmarket at a time when jobs are reducing in numbers, wages and security. Left-leaning men have often assumed women will be there to do unpaid unvalued work. It’s the only thing I can think of. There used to be real visions and thoughts in politics once, for instance Harold Wilson’s vision of us all working less and sharing the wealth. Instead it’s all just about who can grab power now.

I agree and I think Starmer (assuming he doesn't actually believe TWAW) has missed a strategic trick by not supporting Liz Truss's statement as a good balance of women's and trans people's rights. The TRAs would have flounced but many women would have returned to the party, and it would have sent a message that he's not (entirely) in thrall to identity politics.

chliing19 · 24/09/2020 20:31

Lost my vote (and membership) over this.

JKRismyhero · 24/09/2020 20:39

I've been teetering on the edge of not voting for them but that's that I'm afraid. I don't know what else i can do but not give them my vote any more. It pains me, but I'll do it.

nepeta · 24/09/2020 20:46

PotholeParadise I do think Labour believes that this issue wins them votes. Whether it does or not is an empirical question depending on how many people are on each side of the issue and how strongly they feel about these issues as compared to the overall platform of the party.

SisyphusAndTheRockOfUntidiness · 24/09/2020 21:03

I didn't vote for them last time, & won't again until they change their position on this. Have always been politically on the left. Refuse to vote Tory.

Dressingdown1 · 24/09/2020 21:07

I'm shocked that Labour is so deaf to female voices. We represent the majority of the voting population. I shan't be voting Labour again until they drop this ridiculous position.

McDuffy · 24/09/2020 21:16

I do think the ratio on that tweet would've been different a year ago!
It's an odd hill to (politically) die on 🤷‍♀️

fatblackcatspaw · 24/09/2020 21:23

i'm a member I rejoined to vote for Starmer for leader... but I'm not impresssed so far. Bought socks for Boris I think I'll send them to Starmer as he already appears to have cold feet on supporting women.

Floisme · 24/09/2020 21:28

Hey Labour Party, I was leafleting for you when Margaret Thatcher was elected in 1979. I've frozen my arse off outside polling stations and trudged round delivering your newsletters (which were boring as hell by the way). I even voted for you in December.

You can piss right off now.

Collidascope · 24/09/2020 21:31

They're the only party never to have had a female leader, I believe, so I suppose this shouldn't be a huge surprise, but honestly, what dicks.

Impatiens · 24/09/2020 21:37

I feel crushed and humiliated by Labour - I've never voted for anyone else but I'll never vote for them again.

Helmetbymidnight · 24/09/2020 21:54

i feel very pissed off.

my local labour party barely cares about anything except trans rights so im not surprised. the candidate wont state where he stands but i think i know...

if they take this stance at the election, i will campaign against them.

sultanasofa · 24/09/2020 22:15

I think this Labour twitter account has really misread the room.

Despite very little coverage by mainstream media, the consequences of implementing gender ideology has slowly started seeping through and reaching public consciousness. Self ID is not a vote winner, especially now the other 'barriers' of cost, online and healthcare have been addressed.

I haven't seen a massive public outcry following Liz Truss' announcement. The usual suspects have been tantrumming, but to less effect than usual. I hope that as people feel more able to publicly support women's sex-based rights, Sir Keir can use this to bring Labour around to a more rational position in time for the next election.

FemaleAndLearning · 24/09/2020 22:30

No Labour vote from me. They just don't get it. I was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt, but they've missed that opportunity now.

Imnobody4 · 24/09/2020 22:39

Can't wait to hear what Kate Green has to say about the DFE guidance.

RandomGel · 24/09/2020 22:40

It is so clear that women are merely collateral damage to the pursuit of and obsession with minority rights that is common to all parties. I was a life-long Labour voter, but no longer. Keir Starmer will wrap himself in the Union Jack and declare that he really is proud of his country in his bid to win back the red wall and yet he refuses to speak out on behalf of those who make up half the red wall. He will bend the knees and gladly embark on an unconscious bias course in order to re-educate himself but he could not rebuke his MP for daring to suggest that a female author had weaponised her abuse. His party fails to understand that most people do believe that Liz Truss decision is a fair one. #LabourLosingWomen - should be trending today.

And it is not just Labour, while I am hugely grateful to Liz Truss and Jackie Doyle-Price for courageously defending women, Crispin Blunt is calling for the sacking and cancelling of Liz Truss in daring to ignore his backroom deals. His fury and outrage can hardly be contained that a female MP has listened to and acted on the concerns of women and made a decision that would best benefit women.

Lib Dems, Greens – Nada. Or at least nothing I can be bothered to read or take on board. Probably something around the unfairness, do doubt, having really very little interest in ‘cervix havers’.

Time for a New Party.
