Labour continuing to support self-declaration

Apologies if this has already been mentioned but the official Labour Twitter account tweeted this earlier today:
It is deeply disappointing that the government has let trans people down and dropped its plans to reform the Gender Recognition Act.
Labour is committed to equality and we continue to support updating the GRA to introduce self-declaration for trans people.

I'm another ex-Labour voter who never expected to be so grateful to Liz Truss. However disappointed I was earlier in the week that she didn't put greater emphasis on women's rights to single-sex spaces etc, I think she has actually been quite astute in her approach. Labour, on the other hand, has been completely deaf to the concerns of so many voters who would like to vote for them if only they weren't determined to destroy our sex-based rights. I will never vote Labour whilst this is their policy.

Tootsweets23 · 24/09/2020 18:43

This is one of those bellwether value issues. If you can't understand why self ID gives predators access to women and children, especially as a former prosecutor who must have seen the lengths sex offending males will go to, then you can't be trusted to understand anything as you are clearly a bit dim.

Or, you do understand that self ID gives predators access to women and children, but either don't care or think it is a price worth paying to keep the wokies happy. And in that case, you can't be trusted as PM as you are an enabler of sex abusers.

If KS seriously wants to be PM he has to come out against self ID or he will lose because in neither case is he fit to lead the country.

There is no third way, he can't fence sit or triangulate his way out of this.

Brandaris · 24/09/2020 18:44

I so badly want to be able to vote Labour, but I absolutely can’t while they are showing they think so little of women.

I am related to two people who voluntarily work very hard for labour and I think they are close to leaving too.

ScrapThatThen · 24/09/2020 18:45

I'm so disappointed labour. I won't vote for this party that won't even look at what the concerns of women are. Thank you Liz Truss.

AbsintheFriends · 24/09/2020 18:46

I watched The Social Dilemma recently on Netflix, which is about how social media's corrosive influence on all aspects of modern life, including politics.

A quote that particularly stuck with me was 'if humans can't agree on what's true - or that there is such a thing as truth - we're toast.'

Labour would do well to think on that. And remember that the truth is that women don't have penises and humans can't change sex.

persistentwoman · 24/09/2020 18:47

In the light of the new DfE SRE guidelines I now await the Labour party start arguing that children must be taught sexually explicit material by lobby groups and children must be transitioned in secret from their parents. Hmm

Kit19 · 24/09/2020 18:47

Nailed it tootsweets!

I don’t believe KS doesn’t see the problem & I think he personally wishes it would just go away but he won’t come out & say he supports the government on this. he’s a coward

StillNotAGirl · 24/09/2020 18:49

I won't be voting for Labour again until they drop this (I'd also like an apology to women for appointing Lily Madigan). I just applied for a postal vote as although I always liked going up to vote in person walking to the polling station to spoil my vote is just depressing.

It's self sabotaging of Labour, this should be an easy government to beat. Maybe they just don't want to be in power?

Stella Creasey asking for accounts of misogyny but blocking women when they reply is a terrible look.

Datun · 24/09/2020 18:51

They might change their minds when all the court cases have come to fruition.

It's only so long you can keep up a friendly, ideological position, in the teeth of reality.

DeliasDinner · 24/09/2020 18:52

Is there a single Labour politician who has actually stood up for women on this? One? I'll not vote for a party which denies my right to a safe and peaceful existence.

Datun · 24/09/2020 18:52

Awful.

Did it, wrote to Keir.

No more labour for me. They don’t care about me or other women. They are so ridiculously out of touch with the normal everyday people who don’t use twitter and they aren’t interested in getting back in touch.

Stuffofawesome · 24/09/2020 18:59

Won't vote for them again

SallySmedley · 24/09/2020 19:05

@Codexdivinchi

Their eyes are fixed firmly on the Millennials. Many of them who don’t even vote now but will in a few years. Labour know they won’t win anytime soon because of the shit show it’s been recently so are just playing the long game.

The Millennial generation will really fuck women over. Girls just don’t accept that women have had to fight for the right that they casually have now. I know many young girls who absolutely deny that there is a wage ceiling, think that TWAW ect..

It’s depressing.

I'm a millennial, albeit an older one.

I have voted Labour or LibDem in every election since I turned 18, depending on where I lived. Neither party will get my vote again for as long as they ignore women on this issue. I spoiled my ballot at the last election, and would do so again.

BrassicaRabbit · 24/09/2020 19:05

I'm exasperated. I've been a member for years. Ex Corbynite. Hanging on to give Starmer a chance. But feel a bit weird giving them money now. I couldn't vote for them until they clear up the confusion around women's rights.

Seeing Stella Creasey silence women on twitter has been too much. Misogyny in action. It is a privilege to be able to pretend TWAW. Many of us simply can't, because of the trauma we are left with thanks to what men have already done to us. I expect crap from men, but when women dismiss us it is heartbreaking.

OvaHere · 24/09/2020 19:09

Another one who has given up on Labour having voted for Blair, Brown and Corbyn the first time around.

Couldn't do it at the last election.

Their unwillingness to recognise the conflict or to respect women means I'm done with them. I think it would take a massive rehaul of the party to make me reconsider.

Yeah that's really bad. How dare she?

The oldest millennials were born in 1981, the youngest 1996. I'm pretty sure most 25-40 year olds are already voting and are adults not girls Hmm
Mollyollydolly · 24/09/2020 19:16

Angela Eagle just tweeted in support of Crispin Blunt calling for Truss to be sacked. I mean .. I don't have the words ..

EmpressJKRowlingSpartacus · 24/09/2020 19:18

I voted Labour for years. I can’t vote for them now they’re so clearly anti-women though. I’m not voting for any party that doesn’t support us.

Kit19 · 24/09/2020 19:20

Labour - “we hate women”

Kit19 · 24/09/2020 19:21

We need a mumsnet party 😆

Lordamighty · 24/09/2020 19:25

@Mollyollydolly

What's so disappointing is the Truss statement was so measured and fair and most people will see this. Labour just don't seem to understand how most of the population think. There's so many things they can attack the tories on and they choose the subject where the vast majority think Truss has been very sensible. Insane.
Exactly this ^^
CheeryTreeBlossom · 24/09/2020 19:55

I'm a millenial, closer to 25 than 40 and have written to my local labour MP saying they've lost my vote and that of my entire life long labour voting family until they come to their senses.
I don't know who they think this is going to win over sufficiently to get them in power.
