Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Virgin Active changing rooms segregated by gender identity

Okay, I know this has been mentioned on passing on another thread, but I think it needs its own discussion.

Virgin Active have said that their changing rooms are segregated by gender identity and not by biological sex:

I'm a VA member. This is something I would be prepared to cancel my membership over. Are they seriously saying that any male may access women-only communal changing rooms, where there are no individual cubicles, where women routinely queue for showers, provided he says he identifies as a woman?

This isn't about toilets. This isn't about who is 'peeing next to you' in the next cubicle. This is about women having to agree to undress in the presence of male-bodied strangers if they wish to use the facilities.

How is this even remotely defensible?

(I like the Twitter replies though.)

Are there any men saying that they would support these GNC males in the male changing rooms because it must be so difficult for them?

FFS, be kind women, budge up a bit.

Norma27 · 15/09/2020 12:30

No men have supported the policy so far. Several women have though.
Apparently I am unkind etc. And the latest statement is 'a room full of vaginas is just as dangerous as penises!'

EdgeOfACoin · 15/09/2020 12:33

@Norma27

New comments on there by 3 women saying they would welcome these men as it must be so difficult for them. Also that a penis is fine and is not a threat in the female changing rooms. Do I live on a different planet to some of these people?
How can they tell the difference between someone like Alex Drummond and a man who is trying to take advantage of the situation?

Are they comfortable with 12 or 13 year old girls also sharing a changing room with male-bodied people? What if the girls feel uncomfortable? Are they making sure to teach their daughters to be inclusive and not make a fuss?

Is it 97 or 98 per cent of sexual assaults that are committed by penis-havers?

They’re taking complete nonsense!

maybe trawl the “break it didn’t for me” and “this never happens” thread for some answers back

Norma27 · 15/09/2020 12:38

First man has come on to say he doesn't mind these men changing with his wife and daughter!

I'm trying not to get in an argument with these people.
I said in my post I just wanted to state VA policy so that people could make up their mind.
Obviously the woke believers have to try to belittle my beliefs.
I can see why people are scared to say how they feel. I am bloody exhausted and actually feel like deleting my post on there.

Norma27 · 15/09/2020 12:42

I have pointed out it is penises in the changing rooms I have a problem with. All fine as vaginas are just as dangerous!

Greencoatblue · 15/09/2020 12:44

I have an ingenious idea. Make the male changing rooms and showers unisex so people like his wife and daughter (and other sympathisers) can go in there, along with all male bodied people. That will leave the female changing areas free for female bodied people who have no wish to see or change next to penises.

Norma27 · 15/09/2020 12:45

That would be too bloody simple and sensible Green!

Norma27 · 15/09/2020 12:48

Here is another gem, 'sometimes we have to trust noone comes to harm, and just get on with the changes in life'
Same person who told us to keep our kids at home if we don't like it!

Norma27 · 15/09/2020 12:55

I stated 99% of sexual assaults are perpetrated by those with a penis.
Apparently that is just those reported. Obviously millions of vagina owners are committing these crimes too. Obviously some do but a tiny proportion.
I am actually losing the will to live now!

And a Muslim lady who objects on religious grounds has been told religion should be about respect and inclusion. Noone will be looking at her anyway apparently! Oh My God!

Ereshkigalangcleg · 15/09/2020 13:02

Go in with the privacy and dignity issue. It's not just about safety. We have the right to spaces free from males when we are getting changed.

ChakaDakotaRegina · 15/09/2020 13:02

Lord grant me the serenity to accept transwomen in to women’s spaces, the courage to challenge men in women’s spaces and the wisdom to know the difference.

Greencoatblue · 15/09/2020 13:03

Norma, may I suggest you find a hard surface to hit your head against, it will be less painful that reading that tripe! I wonder why these people aren't arguing against 9 year old boys being banned from the female changing areas.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 15/09/2020 13:03

Ask them why male feelings are more important than female ones. Facebook comments, like Twitter, is a cesspit of stupid, though.

OldCrone · 15/09/2020 13:05

Is it 97 or 98 per cent of sexual assaults that are committed by penis-havers?

Over 98%. And 100% of rapes.

Norma27 · 15/09/2020 13:11

Green I have some concrete that needs removing in the garden. Think I might see if I can use my head to get it up if I bang it hard enough.
I should just find a single sex gym if I dislike penis so much too!
3 women are totally on the woke bandwagon and the one man.

EdgeOfACoin · 15/09/2020 13:34

I know that a fair amount of women on FWR used to believe wholeheartedly in the TWAW mantra before changing their view over time.

I'm just wondering - did anyone on here ever make those same arguments that Norma is hearing? And did anyone ever feel slightly silly/awkward making them at the time? Obviously some people make those arguments because they truly believe them. However, some people have to make those arguments because that's where TRA logic takes you, even if it's an uncomfortable conclusion.

Norma27 · 15/09/2020 13:38

That is such an interesting question Edge.
I wouldn't necessarily call myself a feminist, I am new to the fwr board. I have always had the same views on this matter though. I don't know if I gave the issue much thought before though.
Would be so interesting to hear if other people's views have changed over time.

Kit19 · 15/09/2020 13:40

Well you would Norma except thanks to stonewall misrepresenting the law women only spaces are deemed transphobic

You can’t find a woman only gym when the definition of woman has been changed to include men can you?
