calling once more for a more nuanced debate around gender identity and women's rights. It's here https://www.jkrowling.com/opinions/statement-from-j-k-rowling-regarding-the-robert-f-kennedy-human-rights-ripple-of-hope-award/.

Thanks JKR

Good work JKR! She is a class above all of her accusers.

MilleniumHallsWalledGarden · 28/08/2020 00:45

Typo in the title Hmm sorry

She seems to have been prompted to write it by a recent post on a website. I've never heard of them so don't have any context for the comments they've made: 'Kerry Kennedy, President of Robert F Kennedy Human Rights, recently felt it necessary to publish a statement denouncing my views on RFKHR’s website.' and JKR has returned the award they gave her last year. She sounds very grave and serious.

JKR is one of the few good things about 2020.

FemaleAndLearning · 28/08/2020 00:49

JK Rowling is just brilliant.

BlackWaveComing · 28/08/2020 00:49

Read it, love her. So sane.

yourhairiswinterfire · 28/08/2020 00:49

She returned her Ripple Of Hope award Shock

JKR is an absolute diamond. You can tell she genuinely deeply cares about this, for all involved.

I'm so thankful she didn't back down for those that abused her. She's a proper class act.

newnameforthis123 · 28/08/2020 00:51

She's the epitome of when they go low. I just can't believe they keep going so low. God I admire her. Thank you JKR. Thank you thank you thank you.

"After hearing personally from some of these women, and from such a wide range of professionals, I’ve been forced to the unhappy conclusion that an ethical and medical scandal is brewing. I believe the time is coming when those organisations and individuals who have uncritically embraced fashionable dogma, and demonised those urging caution, will have to answer for the harm they’ve enabled."

That's integrity for you.

And the inevitable revolting backlash she'll get just proves her point.

Thingybob · 28/08/2020 00:56

This is taken from the JFKHR site and it seems rather apt

Robert F. Kennedy said, “Each time a person stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, they send forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.”

MilleniumHallsWalledGarden · 28/08/2020 00:59

'I am deeply saddened that RFKHR has felt compelled to adopt this stance, but no award or honour, no matter my admiration for the person for whom it was named, means so much to me that I would forfeit the right to follow the dictates of my own conscience.'

Yep, integrity.

Jesus, their statement was TRA lingo bingo. Science proves sex is not binary. High rates of suicide (that no one can produce any stats for).

Sounds like it was produced by Stonewall.

There's a glaring error in that piece. Well, more than one!

The writer says something like 'from this, I understand that JKR believes your sex at birth is the most important determinant of gender', which is so wrong it's funny. She, like us, doesn't believe any such thing - that being female makes you naturally feminine, say. She, like us, simply believed that independent of the concept 'gender identity', sex matters.

But that's the misapprehension, deliberate or otherwise, that allows genderists to position JKR on the same side as the religious right wing. By insisting on a link (sex=gender) that feminists do not believe exists in any meaningfully essentialist way.

WildRunner · 28/08/2020 01:03

God, I love her. But what I love even more, is that friend who had never engaged in this debate have suddenly proclaimed "Say What?"

Eyes are being opened. And that's because of JK and her platform.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 28/08/2020 01:05

By insisting on a link (sex=gender) that feminists do not believe exists in any meaningfully essentialist way.

They insist on it only when it suits their argument. When it's not such a helpful way to frame things, they say things like " of course sexist doesn't equal gender, no one denies that biological sex exists".

MilleniumHallsWalledGarden · 28/08/2020 01:06

She's brought a huge amount of sunlight with her.

rfkhumanrights.org/news/a-statement-from-kerry-kennedy-president-of-robert-f-kennedy-human-rights

From their statement that JKR responded to:

“Over the course of June 2020—LGBTQ Pride Month—and much to my dismay, J.K. Rowling posted deeply troubling transphobic tweets and statements. On June 6, she tweeted an article headlined “Opinion: Creating a more equal post-COVID-19 world for people who menstruate.” She wrote glibly and dismissively about transgender identity: “‘People who menstruate.’ I’m sure there used to be a word for those people. Someone help me out. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud?”“

“I have spoken with J.K. Rowling to express my profound disappointment that she has chosen to use her remarkable gifts to create a narrative that diminishes the identity of trans and nonbinary people, undermining the validity and integrity of the entire transgender community—one that disproportionately suffers from violence, discrimination, harassment, and exclusion and, as a result, experiences high rates of suicide, suicide attempts, homelessness, and mental and bodily harm. Black trans women and trans youth in particular are targeted.”

“Trans rights are human rights. J.K. Rowling’s attacks upon the transgender community are inconsistent with the fundamental beliefs and values of RFK Human Rights and represent a repudiation of my father’s vision. As well, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states in Article 1: “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights…” Women’s rights are not degraded by the recognition of trans rights. On the contrary: A commitment to human rights demands a commitment to combat discrimination in all its forms.”

Only read the full statement if your blood pressure is good 😠

rfkhumanrights.org/awards/ripple-of-hope-award/our-laureates-2018
“The Robert F. Kennedy Ripple of Hope Award celebrates leaders of the international business, entertainment, and activist communities who have demonstrated a commitment to social change. Past honorees—including Barack Obama, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Bono, Hillary Rodham Clinton, George Clooney, Robert F. Smith, John Lewis, and Tim Cook—reflect Robert Kennedy’s passion for equality, justice, basic human rights, and his belief that each of us can make a difference.“

They seem to have removed all of the 2019 past laureates 🙄

Bill Clinton is listed as an initial laureate.

JKR is class personified.
