calling once more for a more nuanced debate around gender identity and women's rights. It's here https://www.jkrowling.com/opinions/statement-from-j-k-rowling-regarding-the-robert-f-kennedy-human-rights-ripple-of-hope-award/.

Thanks JKR

She is 100% a class act.

At the ‘middle-aged moment’ publicist statement a few years ago I felt totally despairing. It seemed so awfully hopeless that a publicist could offer such a weak, woman-hating defence of something that didn’t even need defending- a ‘like’ on social media -and bow down cravenly just to avoid negative financial consequences.

Now I am so glad she is the courageous woman I hoped she was. Bloody hell. I think she’s brilliant because despite/because of her ‘position’ she’s subject to unbelievable pressures and tensions yet steely in her convictions, expressing them unequivocally but with emotion. I’ve no desire to be her when I grow up - too much public exposure for me - but I am in total awe of her and wish her nothing but love.

I had a real-life conversation with someone today - a fearless outspoken feminist - who said they’re scared to speak, and their friends are scared to speak. Women who’ve spent their whole lives speaking out, protesting. JKR’s given them a focus, a figurehead. That’s the generation above me. I’ve hope for the generation below. Wokesters in the middle - we’ll see. They’re having children now... I reckon a lot can change once you have kids yourself.

@Thingybob

This is taken from the JFKHR site and it seems rather apt

Robert F. Kennedy said, “Each time a person stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, they send forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.”

Bit ironic really. JKRs reasoned and reasonable statements have been little ripples of hope pushing back against the flood of mysogynist and ill informed rhetoric spewed out by radical trans groups.

So pleased that she is again proving that you can speak your mind and express opinions with dignity and integrity and don't have to resort to personal abuse and threats of violence to make your argument sound strong.

Good for her. Principles.

MForstater · 28/08/2020 01:49

She is amazing.
I am so angry....

(They clearly don’t believe ‘you have to do something about it’ when the ‘it’ is women, and the ‘something’ is stand up for our rights, and be our voice.)

Since they’ve removed the 2019 laureates from their web page, storing here for reference otherwise it’ll become one of ‘things that never happen’

nepeta · 28/08/2020 02:48

But sex is very much binary! So much damage has been done by the refusal to have an open debate about these issues.
Also, Kerry Kennedy writes that women's rights are not diminished by trans rights. She is wrong about that one, too, at least when we consider the fact that the oppression of women is sex-based and it is sex which is being disappeared and becoming something which cannot be named. That doesn't actually make fighting against sexism easier.

Didkdt · 28/08/2020 03:04

To paraphrase JKRowling has again spoken up for those of us with a cervix who want to preserve our biological origin and our physical beings

crumpet · 28/08/2020 03:44

She is the epitome of a ripple of hope.

Thank you JKR x

Poppyisa · 28/08/2020 03:52

Thanks for the links, and thanks to Jo for taking a stand for women and girls.

Genevieva · 28/08/2020 03:54

Well done her. After everything she has done in this area it must hurt so much that she is being castigated in this way.

The lack of proper scientific process in the area is what is causing real harm.

The fairytale that someone can make their body authentically like that of the opposite sex, leaving them with scarring and a lifelong dependency on artificial hormones and the failure to tell patients what the reversal rate after surgery is has become scandalous. Early intervention is leaving young people infertile and unable to have a sexual relationship, which I also consider to be a breach of their human rights. To give such invasive treatment so easily without understanding the aetiology and pathology of the problem is bad science and bad medicine. It is storing up problems for the future and is likely to result in repeated litigation against the NHS, which is failing to protect children by encouraging gender reassignment too quickly.

The infringement of women's rights to compete in sport abasing other biological women is a true breach of human rights enshrined in law. Many of us are not concerned about what trans people wear or which loo they use but still believe some spaces - particularly competitive sports and women's prisons - must remain sacrosanct. It is possible to respect trans people without agreeing that it is acceptable to ride rough shod over the rights of biological women.

unwashedanddazed · 28/08/2020 03:58

She's the epitome of integrity. Her opposition would do well to shut up and stop proving her right.

JimminyCricketwhites · 28/08/2020 04:39

I adore JKR. I have personally written to her and thanked her for everything she is doing to support women’s rights and give us a reasoned voice against the TRA movement.

I have a question though - what’s this about in the statement from the RFK statement?

Rowling then liked a tweet that opposed a bill to ban conversion therapy (both sexual orientation and gender identity) in Canada

zen1 · 28/08/2020 05:09

Full of admiration for this woman.

miri1985 · 28/08/2020 05:13

She is the exact opposite to most other liberal people we are seeing nowadays who are so scared to speak up lest they be on the "wrong side of history". They fail to recognise that no movement that has sterilised children has been remembered kindly.

I have no doubt that all the people who are currently promoting childhood transition will claim they didn't know the well published side effects etc. that the risk of detransition was worth the cost and the fact its teenage girls were collateral damage will be seen as no big deal.

I am grateful to JK Rowling for declaring the emperor has no clothes and for all the other women who also stood up and proclaimed it publicly at their own personal cost and helped her to be this brave. This is real courage

Mummyoflittledragon · 28/08/2020 05:59

Wow a woman apart! So much integrity.

EdgeOfACoin · 28/08/2020 06:08

@WildRunner

God, I love her. But what I love even more, is that friend who had never engaged in this debate have suddenly proclaimed "Say What?"

Eyes are being opened. And that's because of JK and her platform.

I think it's the people who have had no clue about any of this who are going to be the ones who turn the tide.

Those who have already nailed their colours to the mast are going to take much, much longer to come round (who wants to admit to encouraging or colluding in a medical scandal?)

I think it's wonderful that JKR is bringing this debate to a wider audience and refuses to be cowed by the 'educate yourself!' mob. It's great that she's internationally renowned as well, since she might help those in other countries find a voice too.

If you're reading, JKR, thank you Flowers

Her father's name still has a lot of weight in the US, but Kerry Kennedy is a joke: nypost.com/2016/07/31/kerry-kennedys-fury-sends-family-charity-spiraling-staff/

She claims to be a great advocate for human rights — but former employees tell The Post that behind closed doors, Kerry Kennedy is a monster who’s driving her father’s legacy into the ground.

“For someone who’s a human-rights lawyer, I don’t think I’ve ever met someone who cares so little for the people who work for her,” says an employee who resigned from the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice & Human Rights. “She treats them so badly, belittling and embarrassing them in front of others. Everyone who works there is brilliant, but there is very high turnover.”

In the past year, sources say, at least nine employees have quit.

“In general, she treats everyone as the person who would go get her coffee,” says another former executive. “Her attitude is, ‘You’re here to do what I want you to do.’ RFK surrounded himself with people who would say no and push back against him. She surrounds herself with people who won’t challenge her and who say yes no matter what.”

These employees could never figure out what the foundation’s goals were.

Multiple sources — all of whom spoke on the condition of anonymity — say Kennedy uses foundation funds to pay for lavish expenses and the foundation itself as an excuse to party with celebs around the globe. The foundation’s most recent tax filings show she paid herself $357,340 in 2014. That same year, she took out a $2.4 million line of credit for the center, which has offices in DC and on Manhattan’s Madison Avenue.

Another strong statement. Thank you JKR.

SisterWendyBuckett · 28/08/2020 07:12

Thank you JKR - courage and sanity once again.

DancelikeEmmaGoldman · 28/08/2020 07:14

“Rowling then liked a tweet that opposed a bill to ban conversion therapy (both sexual orientation and gender identity) in Canada”

I don’t know this particular instance, but in Australia at least, conversion therapy is strongly linked to trans identity. So treating gender dysphoria as a psychological issue and delaying interventions, medical or surgical, is seen as conversion therapy. Of course, most people are opposed to conversion therapy for sexual orientation, so linking the concepts together has been a successful strategy.

How people who push for the ability to medicalise traumatised children and teenagers for the rest of their lives, sleep at night, I don’t understand.

JKR is right that this an international medical and legal scandal in the making.

She has spoken out so clearly and with such truth and logic and in the face of such vitriol.

FindTheTruth · 28/08/2020 07:16

The Society for Evidence-Based Gender Medicine (SEGM) that JKR links to www.segm.org/ in her post ... are a breath of fresh air. Experts calling for a science based approach, proper research and safe, compassionate, ethical and evidence-informed healthcare for children, adolescents, and young adults with gender dysphoria. So that Patients, families and clinicians can make informed healthcare decisions
