@JoyFreeCake

This kind of thing is why it annoys me that the internet is now seen as basically just websites and email. A distributed system like Usenet is far more resilient to this kind of thing than any website. If your ISP didn't carry a particular newsgroup, you subscribed to a service that did. Nobody can ban newsgroups (other than governments, I guess, but even then they can only ban access).

I have to admit I shifted to commercial sites too, simply because that's where the people were.

Usenet is distributed and open by design, meaning there is no managing entity. It can't be bullied or defunded or otherwise shut down. It exists only by virtue of participation. And unfortunately too few people knew that is what powers it so they were happy enough to subject themselves to polished-looking commercial web sites instead.

Usenet still exists but it's running on fumes now.

JoyFreeCake · 30/06/2020 12:05

Exactly.

I think some of the rot set in with Google Groups TBH, when Google bought Deja and people started to conflate newsgroups and Google Groups. But obviously web forms, Facebook and Twitter were the real blows.

I haven't used Usenet in ages but I think it's due a revival.

@TreestumpsAndTrampolines

I removed my account and told them exactly why. Fuck Reddit. I was only there for GC.
I have done the same. I was mostly there for the spooky stories and cute animal stuff, but they can be found elsewhere. Fuck those misogynist shitbags.
Abhannmor · 30/06/2020 13:11

This is horrendous. I so agree with The Taming of Theresa. Googling gender critical - to try and find an alternative to the banned subreddit - all that appears is a torrent of trans rights stories and viewpoints. Google seems to be nobbled too. What worries me also is this censorship of perfectly sensible and moderate commentary is meat and drink for the far right. You can silence people and even get them fired. But one day , in the privacy of a polling booth

dazzlinghaze · 30/06/2020 13:17

I've also deleted my account and told them why. Feeling quite down about this, it was a great resource.

MadBadDaddy · 30/06/2020 13:40

MN is not Reddit and that should be celebrated.

The fact that I or other TWs can post here at all without being instantly evicted is the difference between MN and reddit/GC, regardless of whether or not I am pulled to bits or drowned in honey.

As biased and one sided as it is, MN/FWR supports actual debate, and employs professional mods. Reddit OTOH is a collection of self-policing echo chambers. If you disagree or oppose, you are toast.

If you want to understand r/GC's fate, look into the story of r/The-Donald which has been more widely reported on and for longer. Essentially both communities distilled themselves into a hive-mind of toxicity.

Kettlingur · 30/06/2020 14:01

Isn't it kind of you to come and explain to us what we need to do in order to understand.

MadBadDaddy · 30/06/2020 14:09

Reading some of the comments, see folk wondering "are we next?" etc. I thought it was worth pointing out. I've been coming to MN for about 16 years and would hate to see it turn into the single-issue-cess-pit that was r/GC.

FreddieMac · 30/06/2020 14:13

Yeah deleted the app. How did you tell Reddit that was why tho?

JKRismyhero · 30/06/2020 14:20

@FreddieMac

Yeah deleted the app. How did you tell Reddit that was why tho?
It asked me for a reason when I deactivated my account. If you just delete the app your account is still active.
Oxyiz · 30/06/2020 14:31

I imagine it would give them great joy to read why some women are leaving sadly. I've just deleted the app and left it at that.

MaryMung0 · 30/06/2020 18:08

Another mother’s forum I frequent just locked all discussion on this because conversation had had the temerity to drift into a polite debate over trans issues Hmm

velourvoyageur · 30/06/2020 18:42

TrueLesbians (i.e. the only sane/gender critical sub for lesbians, but definitely not one where all the focus was on GC chat) is gone too. Very sinister. Just don’t understand this almost feverish adoration of men and support for their anti-feminist backlash.

Delphinium20 · 30/06/2020 18:53

Hi! I'm an American and new here...but I would have posted this in GenderCritical if reddit hadn't banned women from their own space. NYTimes just posted an article of two famous celebrities who really are just toxic white men (one is a trans woman). At least some people are wising up to the issues that toxic men are dangerous regardless how hip or trendy they appear. www.nytimes.com/2020/06/29/style/shane-dawson-jeffree-star-youtube.html?referringSource=articleShare

This is perhaps beside the point, but AFAIK Jeffree Star isn’t trans is he? Confused

I think Dawson identifies as a man...but Star looks trans...honestly I don't know.
OvaHere · 30/06/2020 20:13

JS is a gay man afaik. Possibly he might chuck concepts like gender fluid into the equation but I think he's fairly upfront about just being gay.

I don't watch his videos though so might be wrong.

No he isn't.
Bluebellbike · 30/06/2020 20:21

I'm not a Reddit user but heard about the following group today. Surely this one should be binned? It is a group in which young trans identifying people not supported by parents can be "adopted" for online support

r/gendercritical was never a space for debate. It was always open about what it was - a safe harbour for biological women, who wouldn't have to police their language (ie, use "preferred pronouns" that obscured the realities of sex) and wouldn't have to debate the same old points ad nauseum.

It was never for you, and that should have been fine. There were other forums where you could debate gender issues. Other forums where trans women were welcome. The fact that r/gendercritical wasn't one of them doesn't mean it shouldn't be allowed to exist. It was a safe space you didn't need.

The sheer ego it must take to think every place must accommodate you. The arrogance it takes to dismiss any place not designed for you as a "hateful echo chamber". The mind fucking boggles.

TheChampagneGalop · 30/06/2020 21:18

If you use twitter please use the tag #RedditHatesWomen to bring attention to the issue. This shouldn't be allowed to go unnoticed.

ChurchOfWokeApostate · 30/06/2020 21:36

This.
Why can’t TW accept that some things are not for them and that it’s okay for us to have things that are ^not for them*

Exactly. Sometimes (actually quite a lot of the time) It's Not About You.

Thanks for the reply, but please don't shoot the messenger. I don't know exactly why r/GC was banned but I'd bet you a case of Gin that it wasn't because of pronouns.

I don't think any trans people cared that it 'wasn't for us' or 'wanted in', but a lot of us did take exception to being routinely described as child-grooming attention-seeking misogynistic deluded perverts trying to take over the world (Trans Women) or poor helpless impressionable confused lesbians (Trans Men).

And, unlike MN, r/GC also didn't seem to criticise any other aspects of Gender except for trans-people and happily turned a blind eye to a lot of reactionary, right wing patriarchal attitudes if it meant they could complain about Teh Tranz some more. Sorry not sorry x
