That Comerford fellow makes a really disappointing Santa.

merrymouse · 12/06/2020 22:53

"Yeah not Val. if she thinks that Guardian “why are middle aged women so hateful & mean unlike the cool young ppl who want equality for all” piece is balanced, I only hope she’s never had to weigh anything on a set of scales"

I'm glad someone said it - of all the TRA's Comerford seriously gives me the creep. He won some amateur stand up comedian some years back, wrote an autobiography "Cornflakes for dinner". To give him his due, he and his wife had an awful lot thrown at them - she suffers from depression and hypersomnia, he lost his job, both his daughters were diagnosed with autism in quick succession (the elder is high functioning, the younger has very profound autism), and they came close to losing their house. That said, I thought he and the wife came across as very unlikeable in the book. Anyway, he is perpetually on twitter, slating Magdalene Berns (until the recent hoo haa when there was a debate on whether Glinner had muscled his way into her death bed and was posting gifs without permission). Then he was outraged on Magdalene's behalf, until Lizzie Berns clarified the matter. But he is relentless, and comes across as a complete woman hater. one thing that gets me... as I understand he is back working in a 9-5 desk job. All the schools are still shut in Ireland, and parents are doing their best to homeschool. My eldest child has autism and it's a bloody nightmare to manage it all - I can see him regressing daily. How the hell does Comerford have so much time to stalk and harass women on FB? If I had time I'd be a full time activist, but there have been times recently when I've just had to stop browsing and shut down as family time matters too.

RevIMJolly · 12/06/2020 23:03

Stephen Fry is pro trans. But may not be crass enough to bite the hand that probably paid for his holiday home.

AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken · 12/06/2020 23:08

I’d be interested in Sandi Toksvig’s stance

StrangeLookingParasite · 12/06/2020 23:08

I've got a real thing about Aidan Comerford. You know when people say someone makes their skin crawl - its that. He just gives me the heebie jeebies something chronic.

He is utterly revolting. He reminds me of all those too clever by half boys in first or second year university, who would trip you up on the slightest thing, to prove how superior and extra clever they were.
He turns my stomach, quite literally.

CaraDune · 12/06/2020 23:12
I don't agree with most of what Julia Hartley Brewer says but she has been forthright in rejecting the 'cis' label. This is worth watching whenever the preachy ones start bullying women:
Thank you so much for posting this - I'd forgotten this one. JHB is magnificent.

Even though I disagree with pretty much all of her political opinions (and you know what, that's fine, a free society thrives on pluralism) it is still absolutely glorious to watch a woman who gives precisely no fucks telling a wokey bloke to sod off.

And tells everyone you’re a “frigid slag” after you fight their advances off. We all know many Aidans

Of all the blue tick people that I am following, which is only about 8 (Stephen Fry, Lucy Mangan, Clare Balding, Victoria Coren Mitchell, Susie Dent, Michael Rosen, Sadiq Kahn, Emily Maitlis), the only one who has tweeted, liked, or retweeted anything at all about it is Emily Matilis. Sadiq Kahn tends to tweet things about being inclusive generally, but not sure about this specifically. Otherwise it's been pretty much unmentioned on my twitter, and if it weren't for the hashtags at the sides, and threads on here, I would hardly have known it had blown up on twitter. I may need to start following more people.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 12/06/2020 23:27

There is zero risk to publicly standing with Radcliffe, Watson et al at the moment, if anything there are many potential benefits for people willing to do that, so it's very interesting indeed that so few big names have.

Everyone other than a small handful of delusional nutters knows that Rowling is right. Most people also know that sending rape and death threats to a rape and domestic abuse survivor is a bad look, so again, it's very telling that so many TRAs seem so unaware of how that comes across.

Tootletum · 12/06/2020 23:27

@revl are any of us anti trans though, purely for agreeing with the opinions JKR has stated? Or even not wholly agreeing, but defending her right to an opinion about her own experience? Half the problem is that there is such an awful polarisation, why on earth would stating that sex is real mean any harm to any trans person?? What's wrong with a category slightly apart? A trans woman can be a woman, yes, but if she still has all her bits, then she is biologically a man, and socially a woman. That's a very different life and one most of us don't really understand. It's the total shutdown of even any curiosity that is so odd, and all the crap about gender neutral pronouns for people who have some sort of issue with it, as if they think being a man or woman is really that rigid anyway. Does no one any favours.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 12/06/2020 23:33

And I wonder what his search history would reveal in terms of what kind of porn he watches a lot of, terryleather. Hard to say which of us is the more cynical.

(Note that "you are both correct" is also an option, there being quite a bit of overlap there.)

Binterested · 12/06/2020 23:37

Sadiq Khan is fully TWAW but then he's never seen a bandwagon he won't jump on so no surprise there.

I'm silently convinced Lucy Mangan is GC but that's not based on much other than the company she keeps on TW.

I'm a fan of Ian Leslie on Twitter btw - thinker/commentator. He's fully GC and has lots of wokey blokey fans who mostly don't challenge him on this.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 12/06/2020 23:39

Someone mentioned Dave Chapelle, was he in the pro Rowling or Everyone Call Rowling Names group?

(I'd assume he'd be pro Rowling but you never know with how many people act like fools about this issue.)

Ricky Gervais touched on in in the live he shared on twitter this evening.

He's getting more cowardly with age though which is disappointing.

Being silenced is either going to push mildly GC right into radfemdom or into Ben Shapiro/Jordan Peterson style rightness.

RyanBergarasTeeth · 12/06/2020 23:45

I was suprised by the support for jo here on this reddit thread.

Nice bit of bandwagon hopping Owen Jones style from Gillian Martin, MSP.

Alan Massie- so one of Scotland's literary community has spoken out.

Flootered · 13/06/2020 00:18

So funny reading you talk about the odius specimen that is Aidan Comerford.
He is regarded as mightily pathetic here in Ireland, always desperate to get in with the in crowd. There were some cringy DMs he had sent to journalists and writers. Incel shtink off him too but I think he has an unfortunate wife.

DidoLamenting · 13/06/2020 00:19

Sorry wrong link for Gillian Martin

Dances · 13/06/2020 00:23

Not getting the links Dido, can you check?

nettie434 · 13/06/2020 00:29

I really like that Alex Massie article so thanks for link, DidoLamenting. I am so hoping the Grint, Watson, Radcliffe inflamatory statements will backfire. I remember in the 2015 general election, a lot of people said they could not vote for Ed Milliband because he stood against his brother. Without JK Rowling (who we know was consulted a lot for the films), they would all probably be fighting over the odd voiceover and featuring in an ITV3 advert for DFS sofas. They had the perfect opportunity to say they personally disagred with her views but knew she was not transphobic. They did not take it but contributed to the pile on.

terryleather · 13/06/2020 00:30

I will go with "You are both correct" Kittens...
