This Dido? mobile.twitter.com/GillianMSP/status/1271392282340667398

Gillian Martin is GC I think - she was one of the MSPs who had their messages leaked saying Sturgeon was wrong/out of step (? Can’t remember the details)

Thanks Dido

fighting over the odd voiceover and featuring in an ITV3 advert for DFS sofas Grin

1066vegan · 13/06/2020 00:41

@Branbleberries you mentioned the blue tick people that you follow and said that only 1 had posted about it.

You included Michael Rosen in your list which seems really unfair. The poor bloke's just spent about 8 weeks in intensive care. He only came out of intensive care a couple of days ago. He has just started tweeting again but is still in hospital. I hardly think that the JKR business is going to be a priority for him at the moment.

IchbineinBerlinner · 13/06/2020 00:45

@flootered what were the cringy DMs? I'd really like to know. Aidan Comerford is a despicable creep

RyanBergarasTeeth · 13/06/2020 00:50

Has anyone posted anything on facebook and received any backlash. Ive seen a few anti jkr posts on my Facebook but the supportive things i have put have fully been ignored. No ones even tried to fight me for once.

Also would ther be any point in lobbying certain people such as Greta Thunberg or Caitlin Moran?

Flootered · 13/06/2020 00:55

It was around the time of repeal referendum here, he was sliding into anyone with a bit of an audience DMs telling them to take a look at his tweets (rightly supporting women's rights over their body autonomy) and asking them of they could name many other Irish men speaking out (most notable Irish men did, including our very own Glinner of course) and asking to be shouted out and offered to come on their women only panel talk shows and discuss. It was just toe curlingly cringe, the self importancr and self congratulatoryness of it.
I must rifle around for them!

DidoLamenting · 13/06/2020 00:56

Gillian Martin is GC I think

Bet she voted for the representation on public bodies act so many of you are incensed by (personally I am opposed to quotas and lists so would have voted against it for that reason)

IchbineinBerlinner · 13/06/2020 00:57

Thanks @flootered yes please do if you can

Flootered · 13/06/2020 00:58

Message topical podcasters and ask them to discuss it.

In my search for anyone talking about it I actually found a podcast from December 2019 where Des Bishop talks about JK and from what I could stand to listen to he was against her and explaining what a TERF is, needless to say he's gone on my list of enemies!

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 13/06/2020 00:59

Probably Dido - that’s the SNP borg problem...

DidoLamenting · 13/06/2020 01:00

I can't find anything from Gillan Martin supporting JKR. She made a generic comment about the headline being triggering to victims of domestic abuse, which got her into The Guardian and BBC News , but nothing specific about JKR.

Wolfgirrl · 13/06/2020 01:00

@Tootletum of course not. Anti-trans would be wanting to deny them rights purely because they are trans. Not because in doing so it would severely compromise the rights of another oppressed group. The answer to this is surely to have male, female, and gender neutral toilets for trans people to share. If a trans woman didnt want to share with a trans man, why should we women be expected to share with a trans woman? Isnt the logic exactly the same?

donquixotedelamancha · 13/06/2020 01:23

Isn’t it the case that many journalists are also young?

I suspect there is truth to that but I wonder whey a greater source of bias is that most journalists (for major outlets) are posh. It's very hard to get into journalism these days without connections, cultural capital and the money to work for free for a while.

Privilege (in the traditional sense) is a great insulator from reality.

Sorry that didn't come out well - I was posting the list of blue ticks to just indicate it was very short, and that I wouldn't have otherwise known about the controversy, not that I expected those particular blue ticks to necessarily say anything. I needed to follow more people if i wanted a better overview of what is happening on twitter. I'm aware he had just come out of hospital and is only just starting posting again, and would have expected any comment from him at all. (Others on the list I would actually be interested in their views, but again, I don't necessarily expect them to comment). It was more a point about how if you aren't following the right people, you might have missed it all, even on twitter.

Lamahaha · 13/06/2020 08:30

Noma Dumezweni, as in the MN thread I just posted. Already she had to take down her supportive tweet. Angry < not at her, at the TRAs that attacked her tweet.

I've seen loads of support on FB, but only on private threads and GC groups.

Astonishingly the Standing for Women FB group (run by Posie I believe) is public and I've not seen any attacks there. Possibly it's heavily monitored though.

The good thing about FB is that you can censor your groups and own timeline to delete ugly attacks. I don't think you can do that on Twitter -- you have to delete the initial tweet to delete the attacks, right?

On FB you can review posts even before they go through, and accept or reject them. It's so more civil than Twitter. You can clean up your own timeline from melt-downs and pitchfork attacks

India Knight,

And also via India Knight twitter, Melissa Harrison who I hadn't heard of before, but has written some award winning books:

"Melissa's second novel, At Hawthorn Time (also Bloomsbury) was shortlisted for the Costa Novel of the Year award, longlisted for the Baileys Women's Prize for Fiction and the Encore Award; it was a Book of the Year in The Telegraph and chosen as a 'best summer read' by A.S. Byatt in The Observer."

Off to do some shopping.

Going to buy a Melissa Harrison book now.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 13/06/2020 09:13

Just ordered 'Rain' by Melissa Harrison. Looks interesting, not something I would normally pick up.

I don't have twitter anymore, but if anyone's willing to let her know her support of JK just secured her one sale, and quite probably a few repeats (I like buying books) that'd be good. I do think that reminding people of the purchasing power of middle ages women is a rather good idea.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 13/06/2020 09:16

Ha! Middle aged. Not sure of the purchasing power of women in the middle ages.

merrymouse · 13/06/2020 09:23

I very much agreed with that article by Alex Massie, particularly

"But there is another group, some of whom we might call ‘trans allies’ and others who might best be characterised as ‘part-time’ or ‘lifestyle’ trans-people, whose voices often seem to be heard more than those of, if you will, actual trans-people themselves. These men – for if it is not always men it usually seems to be men – frequently display an intolerance so extreme it is reminiscent of a mindset always evident in the early days of a movement seeking to establish a joyously authoritarian regime."

I'm not concerned about changes to rules and practices because I think men will pretend to be trans. I am concerned about men who will use the concept of gender identity to abuse, oppress and control women, because there is no longer any objective definition of sex or trans.

No more quick escapes to the loo, because you can be followed by anyone, and if you question their gender identity you are the oppressor.
