I wonder if the personal messages she's been getting are support from other high profile people too chicken-shit to stick their necks out like she has?

I'm not sure I care what Radcliffe and Watson have said. Offering to donate to mermaids was a mistake. And aligning with abusers and not calling them out is not a good look.

Since they have both tweeted, sympathy for JK has increased, as have clicks on her essay. Opposing what she has said in such a vehement way looks extreme and callous.

The important people to support her are newspapers and MPs. Not child actors.

As for the other celebrities, I think it's great that they're going public. It's crucial for the snowball effect.

Oh my god, @WinterIsGone I saw that tweet and the replies.

Imagine saying you’d never heard of Germaine Greer. The idea that she’s middle-class and out of touch with gender politics, they should be ashamed. They accuse people of ignorance and then say that!!

And including Marilyn in that - suggesting that he was ‘unlikely to know any trans people’. Dear god.

Michael Nugent (blue tick) from Atheist Ireland has tweeted in support of JK.
Oh and Aiden Comerford is now the organiser of Pride

I like to see people I admire supporting her, but Baroness Nicholson is currently the person making a different where it matters.

Baroness Nicholson is doing fantastic with that letter. I really hope the tide turns and this nightmare is over soon.

I've got a real thing about Aidan Comerford. You know when people say someone makes their skin crawl - its that. He just gives me the heebie jeebies something chronic.

I know exactly what you mean!

He is a funny little man.

'OMG the TERFs were only able to find 200 examples of disgusting physically and sexually violent abuse directed at JK Rowling!'

😂

Also, he reckons that TRAs don't collate abuse directed at them because they would never accuse all GC people to be 'like that'. Which is odd coming from a man who posts a screenshot of that single Magdalen Berns tweet at every possible opportunity!

🤣 My very woke lad once told me that GC feminists were all middle class white women. I laughed and pointed out that he would then be middle class, if he genuinely believed that. I’m as far from middle class as you can get and my family are descended from Irish gypsies, on my mother’s side. He genuinely believes being called middle class is an insult! I pointed out that he was a judgemental snob by believing that.

A lot of celebrities, I would assume are too weak to support JK. By acknowledging the underlying truth of gender, that would automatically make them a target for perceived trans phobia.

If a woman tries to defend her actual truth and reality AS A WOMAN, and state that she is so, and a Trans 'woman' challenges this fact.....well, the ACTUAL woman becomes ridiculed and persecuted as most of us have seen.

If you are a man that states he is a Woman. POOF-MAGIC! he is one, because his magic balls and dick let him be whatever he wants.

Actual woman point out the utter ridiculousness of their gender being a suggestion at best, as though our actual history and identity can be moulded and even erased to accommodate a man, simply declaring that he is a woman, then being acknowledged a woman?!

Nope fuckity nope. It's like the Salem witch trials. Modern day persecution of women....for being an actual woman.

Robert Webb has demonstrated his intelligence and has written extensively about gender stereotypes. I value his opinion more.

Personally, so do I. But we're talking here about celebs who haven't stepped up to say the abuse is disgusting. Yes, I want younger celebs, and celebs who are massively high profile to do it because a lot of people who are just generally "woke" and aren't thinking are more likely to be following those celebs than they are Robert Webb or David Baddiel.

And also agree re newspapers. That's why the very insipid way in which they write about the abuse annoys me so much. If I hadn't seen the abuse for myself, the articles I have read would suggest that she's almost being a bit sensitive to the abuse. It's only when you read people telling her to "fucking such my transwoman cock" and similar, more aggressive/violent versions, that the abuse really sinks in.

Maybe I picked a bad moment to look at the replies to JKR on Twitter. But it was a cesspit of verbal abuse and calls for her to shut up. I didn’t see anyone actually address her points. I just wondered how many of of these people had actually read what JKR wrote.

Helen Lewis once wrote “the comments on any article about feminism justify feminism". Apparently, she wasn’t being entirely serious, but I think it’s generally true. It’s definitely true of the Daily Mail and the Daily Telegraph.

I think there's a LOT of support for JKR out there, I've been quite impressed.

Lissa Evans who wrote 'Their finest hour and a half' is it? is gc and she's a wonderful writer.

What bigger names would you like - and are they on social media?

I've been blocked by Aidan C on Twitter for ages. I assume he uses 'terf blocker' because I have never interacted with him. From what I remember he had quite a small following when he started tweeting about Graham Linehan and I think he realised he could get quite a lot of publicity by presenting himself as a trans ally.

I am surprised at the lack of support JKR has received from other authors. Surely literary Edinburgh is quite a connected world? I wouldn't mind if they disagreed - if they could just say threatening and insulting language is not acceptable

yesterday Fern retweeted Frances Barber who wrote that JKR is an extraordinary women. The tweet contained a link to JKR’s piece.

That's encouraging chicken, thanks. I thought she had been on the Jeremy Vine show in the morning and parroted the 'be kind' line in a way that made it sound like she didn't see any problem with the erosion of women's spaces. I might have misunderstood or maybe she felt bad and decided to be a bit more courageous! She's put up with so much sexist shit it would surprise me if she didn't see it.
