Wtf that headline. I feel like I've gone back in time 30 years. How is this even possible in 2020?!

JemimaShore · 12/06/2020 07:40

CoughPatrol - people are going all out to smear JKR in any way possible right now, because they know what a powerful voice she is. They are twisting things, inventing things and telling outright lies.

I was sent this (screenshot attached) on twitter after tweeting support for her. Does anyone seriously think JKR "shares David Duke's views" ?? Of course she doesn't. Smears.

The Strike books don't "out" her as anything more than a writer with feminist leanings - which I think we knew already.

And of course her ex-H feels he can both minimise what he did to her ("it was just a slap") and not be sorry.

Abusive men ALWAYS downplay the violence they inflict on their (so-called) loved ones, and society rarely holds them to account for it.

Lamahaha · 12/06/2020 07:52

I'm still near the beginning of this thread as I haven't been online much.
But I just read this DM article which gives Joanne's side of the story as well as her statement in full.
DM reader comments very positive, with over 10000 likes for the most popular one.
The public knows. The public is not woke.
Apologies if it has been posted before. I'm still catching up on other threads -- I could spend all day on MN and still be behind!

Yes I hope she sue's whoever started this Galbraith fascist pish

@Coughpatrol

I was with JK all the way but I’ve seen some things today that have made me feel uncomfortable about her.

It said she writes under another name, which is the name of the man who created gay conversion therapy, apparently under this name she also wrote a series of books in which the transwoman was the villain. Put together it does make me feel uncomfortable.

I agree with her in the majority but I feel like defending those who may turn out to be genuinely transphobic and/or bigoted in general, does no good for raising awareness and support for what we actually want to achieve.

But that’s just my personal take on it, I think there are some ‘GC’ women who are actually transphobic and it damages the ability to speak out against the real issues. Fully respect that lots of women are of the ‘whatever it takes, whoever it is’ stance.

Wow, she really must have people rattled if all they can come up with is shit like this.
Techway · 12/06/2020 08:21

@Coughpatrol, read her statement and it is very clear she using transphobic.

The smears against her Strike books is only because her statement was so powerful and explained the situation well. It has worried the trans lobby so they are looking to destroy her reputation.

I really think SM is an issue as people read and believe conspiracy theories. Her very long statement explains her beliefs fully. Read that first and you will see that the others tweets are just smears.

It's stuff like this that sometimes makes me wish the world wide web had never been invented. The rampant stupidity of it. Someone says something. Person who reads it doesn't bother to do the minimum of checking to see if it's true, then repeats it. Other people read and repeat, also too lazy to do the minimum of checking. And so it goes.

Disappointed but not surprised to see Rupert Grint on the condemnation bandwagon. How soon are these 'shes an awful person' advocates going to give back the money they made in her name?

None of them have mentioned giving back (or away) the tainted cash, have they?

And by failing to mention the abuse they're tacitly condoning it. Talentless, spineless little twats.

ItsLateHumpty · 12/06/2020 09:26

For our monitors - oh yes, please do ask your patrons to tithe at least 10% of their HP earnings to the cause - imagine all the validating surgeries, centres, and doctors you could buy.

I’ll let teawamutu advise if she wants any recognition for the brilliant idea Grin

Haworthia · 12/06/2020 09:36

I’m surprised Rupert Grint said anything. I thought he was going to stay quiet, bearing in mind he doesn’t have much of a public profile compared with Radcliffe and Watson. Oh, and his wife recently gave birth to their first child, so I’m pretty sure he knows what a biological woman is.

SunsetBeetch · 12/06/2020 09:39

Oh Christ, what did he say?

CaraDune · 12/06/2020 09:41

@SunsetBeetch

The usual "transwomen are women".

No actual engagement with any arguments.

Just "four legs good, two legs bad" to get the retweets.

FantaOra · 12/06/2020 09:47

“I’m mentioning these things now not in an attempt to garner sympathy, but out of solidarity with the huge numbers of women who have histories like mine, who’ve been slurred as bigots for having concerns around single-sex spaces.”

JKR says this, Jamil says bigot, bigot, bigot. JKR certainly knows what she's talking about.

SunsetBeetch · 12/06/2020 09:49

I don't think silence would ever be enough for the TRAs though. Not that I'm not annoyed at these posh little twat actors.

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 12/06/2020 09:49

I’m disappointed by RG I had the impression that he was less sheep than the rest- clearly not

DickKerrLadies · 12/06/2020 09:54

Just "four legs good, two legs bad" to get the retweets.

This is exactly it.

I still find the TRA lack of self-awareness regarding the word 'bigot' somewhat amusing though. 'You're just a bigot so I'm not going to engage with your opinions!'

JemimaShore · 12/06/2020 10:02

I had a strong feeling that Rupert Grint would stay quiet on this but hey ho. She must be feeling "et tu, Rupert?"

Jameela's off on one again on twitter, with a spectacular tweet which starts with condemnation of the violent threats women receive on twitter, but then telling them they're asking for it.

When, in my teens, I first read the Handmaid's Tale, I wondered how the Aunt Lydias could exist. I was so young and naive then. There are many Aunt Lydias out there.

Janeaustensquill · 12/06/2020 10:11

Shared J Ks piece on my Facebook. Slowly gathering likes. No cancellations yet. I am so angry about all this I can barely sleep.

Needmoresleep · 12/06/2020 10:19

Student DDs take is interesting. She is still at the “be kind” stage but tells me she has read JKRs statement and though she does not think she agrees with everything, she feels that JKR has a right to say what she says.

Apparently campus life is constraining. You have to be very careful not to say anything that might offend. Poor DD “liked” something by mistake as she scrolled down on a large group chat, so got piled on. All sorted following an abject apology, but it caused a large amount of stress for something she did not realise she had done. There has been more. A bit of a classic was whether they should go to a vegetarian or a halal restaurant for their Christmas dinner. Muslims said they would feel excluded from somewhere that served alcohol, vegetarians asked why they could not have similar concerns about somewhere that served meat.

So thank you JKR for being ready to speak up for what you believe in. It means a lot for one member of the Harry Potter generation.

FantaOra · 12/06/2020 10:25

That sounds like a great Christmas dinner needmoresleep. Alcohol free vegetarian! Is there anywhere they could actually go in that case?

SunsetBeetch · 12/06/2020 10:26

Yes, quite Jemima

I'm a vegetarian myself and this made me hoot. This is where victim politics gets you.
