Daniel Radcliffe responds to JK Rowling’s tweets: “Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people”

Daniel Radcliffe Responds to J.K. Rowling’s Tweets on Gender Identity – The Trevor Project

FULL STATEMENT

I realize that certain press outlets will probably want to paint this as in-fighting between J.K. Rowling and myself, but that is really not what this is about, nor is it what’s important right now. While Jo is unquestionably responsible for the course my life has taken, as someone who has been honored to work with and continues to contribute to The Trevor Project for the last decade, and just as a human being, I feel compelled to say something at this moment.

Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against all advice given by professional health care associations who have far more expertise on this subject matter than either Jo or I. According to The Trevor Project, 78% of transgender and nonbinary youth reported being the subject of discrimination due to their gender identity. It’s clear that we need to do more to support transgender and nonbinary people, not invalidate their identities, and not cause further harm.

I am still learning how to be a better ally, so if you want to join me in learning more about transgender and nonbinary identities check out The Trevor Project’s Guide to Being an Ally to Transgender and Nonbinary Youth. It’s an introductory educational resource that covers a wide range of topics, including the differences between sex and gender, and shares best practices on how to support transgender and nonbinary people.

To all the people who now feel that their experience of the books has been tarnished or diminished, I am deeply sorry for the pain these comments have caused you. I really hope that you don’t entirely lose what was valuable in these stories to you. If these books taught you that love is the strongest force in the universe, capable of overcoming anything; if they taught you that strength is found in diversity, and that dogmatic ideas of pureness lead to the oppression of vulnerable groups; if you believe that a particular character is trans, nonbinary, or gender fluid, or that they are gay or bisexual; if you found anything in these stories that resonated with you and helped you at any time in your life — then that is between you and the book that you read, and it is sacred. And in my opinion nobody can touch that. It means to you what it means to you and I hope that these comments will not taint that too much.

Love always,
Dan

Just compare his life experience with hers. After her divorce, she was a single mother on benefits who had to borrow money from a friend to study for her teaching qualification. No matter how short a time it was, that is an experience that radicalises you, and she has donated huge sums of money to charities that help single parents in poverty.

His life experience: gets role in Harry Potter at the age of 11 after other high profile acting roles, helped no doubt by his casting agent mother. Fame and fortune.

Just fuck off Daniel.

Sat speachless at what my 10 year old niece has just said...
Can we put all the men who were born men who don't understand about who is a man and who is a woman on an island with all the Transwoman.
If we leave them there for 100 years there will be no babies, so that country will die out.

Oxyiz · 09/06/2020 07:55

I'm still waiting for Emma to predictably speak up. For some reason I think that will sting more, even though she's in the exact same privileged situation as Daniel. You'd hope that she could muster up some imaginary understanding of feeling vulnerable around aggressive men.

NotBadConsidering · 09/06/2020 07:55

He has a bloody cheek apologising for Rowling’s comments. She is responsible for what she says Daniel. She doesn’t need you to protect her or those fans who have been “hurt” by her you dick.

Wow. He knows Jo personally and has earned millions off his association with her work, and he throws her under the bus like this with this mansplaining rubbish.

If you're "still learning" Dan, then maybe consider taking a seat, parking your arse, and listening to the voices of women. Would that really be so hard?

langclegflavoredbananamush · 09/06/2020 07:58

Yet it's clearly an attempt to side with her attackers on this.

Yes, without acknowledging there’s any attack on JKR going on.
I imagine this must be more hurtful to her than the anime avatar meanies.

flamegame · 09/06/2020 07:58

The effrontery of a mediocre actor apologising for Rowling - doesn’t that just mirror the whole transwomen/women appropriation debate.

Helmetbymidnight · 09/06/2020 07:59

“Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people”

fucking arrogance of the arsehole- he doesnt even know what a woman is- yet feels entitled to tell us.

Bloody brilliant! I’m glad your niece is being brought up to know the difference. It will stand her in good stead against any brainwashing from her secondary.

I do feel that no woman should ever agree to sleep with a man who claims to believe male people are women. I suspect terf in the sheets would pretty quickly become terf in the streets.

Floisme · 09/06/2020 08:01

Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people

If Radcliffe really did believe TWAW, his second sentence would surely have begun, 'Any statement to the contrary is factually incorrect as well as ..... etc .'

So unless he turns up on here with a convincing explanation, I'm going to assume he knows damn well he's talking out of his sad, cowardly arse.

ThinEndoftheWedge · 09/06/2020 08:02

Yep - duplicity, double standards, ignoring vitriol to JK and other women who stand up for sex-based rights, no mention of harms to girls forced to share changing rooms with adult males etc.

DR believes TWAM - it oozes from every word

ThinEndoftheWedge · 09/06/2020 08:04

True - and I am particularly saddened about this.

CountryPlumpkin · 09/06/2020 08:04

This has put me in a furious mood this morning. A privileged young man making an official statement telling me what a women actually is.
I know what a woman is, you stupid little twerp. I am one.

contactusdeletus · 09/06/2020 08:06

I'm so disappointed no-one associated with the films has stood up for JK so far. At least stay silent, if you're afraid to actually speak up. To bend like this and betray someone they know full well to be a good person, just because they're afraid of how it will look, is unbelievable.

They know her words are being taken out of context. They know she's a good person, and has a history of depression as well. But not one of them will do the slightest thing to stem the flow of hate towards her.

In the context I really do find Dan's comments despicable. He knew he'd be fanning the flames and did it anyway to protect his own hide. I'll find it impossible to respect him after this.

Gailhugger · 09/06/2020 08:10

As his last couple of UK theatre appearances have been at the Old Vic (that bastion of promoting fair access to basic toilets for women) I’d imagine he’s under some pressure for his next job from someone who’d like JKR to shurrup.

Combine that with a bit of “ally” PR and bingo.

I saw Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead and I’m not keen to see his acting again anyway.

Carriemac · 09/06/2020 08:11

'God grant me the confidence of a mediocre man'

AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken · 09/06/2020 08:13

A man telling women they're wrong, and apologising on our behalf for speaking out of turn. Why is this news??

littlbrowndog · 09/06/2020 08:14

Okey dokey beardie wokey blokey

Great to hear a man telling a woman she is wrong

Great work. And taking two pages full of pish to do it 🤦‍♀️

And in such a patronising way as well

PenguindreamsofDraco · 09/06/2020 08:16

When I hear TWAW being parroted, somehow it always seems that the speaker is thinking, well they can't really be men can they, so because I know there are only two sexes, they must be women.

MamaNewtNewt · 09/06/2020 08:16

I must admit that my first thought on reading it was how patronising it is and the sheer arrogance and assumptions. I don't agree with his statements at all but if he'd left JKR out of it and just made a statement based on his opinion that would be one thing but this is just outrageous.

Honestly I have been so disappointed by the twisting of JKR's words, so many hysterical people on twitter shouting that she's transphobic (she specifically says she respects and supports the rights of trans people) and that she's denying that trans people exist which she clearly doesn't do.

I must admit a year or two ago I was so uneducated on this subject but since educating myself (although by no means an expert) I cannot bring myself to support the erasure of biological sex and all of the implications of that for women. The fact that I would not dare say publicly that people with intact male genitalia are NOT women is frankly worrying. I'm too scared to say what I think for fear of losing my job. I cannot get over the lack of logic and the denial of biological fact. I support trans people and they should be able to live their lives as they want in peace and safety and I think feminists would have been their allies if there was an acceptance of biological fact.

This is the first time I've shared my views with anyone other than my husband - apart from liking some of the 'safer' tweets.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 09/06/2020 08:16

I'm married so not currently relevant, but if I was single that's exactly what I'd be doing.

littlbrowndog · 09/06/2020 08:17

Love always dan

I felt like this when I saw that sign off 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮

Selfsettling3 · 09/06/2020 08:19

I will read through all the other comments.

I read another man telling a women what to think. I wonder how many women have faced discrimination because they are women, I suspected it’s a least 78%, mostly likely 100%.
