Daniel Radcliffe responds to JK Rowling’s tweets: “Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people”

Daniel Radcliffe Responds to J.K. Rowling’s Tweets on Gender Identity – The Trevor Project

FULL STATEMENT

I realize that certain press outlets will probably want to paint this as in-fighting between J.K. Rowling and myself, but that is really not what this is about, nor is it what’s important right now. While Jo is unquestionably responsible for the course my life has taken, as someone who has been honored to work with and continues to contribute to The Trevor Project for the last decade, and just as a human being, I feel compelled to say something at this moment.

Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against all advice given by professional health care associations who have far more expertise on this subject matter than either Jo or I. According to The Trevor Project, 78% of transgender and nonbinary youth reported being the subject of discrimination due to their gender identity. It’s clear that we need to do more to support transgender and nonbinary people, not invalidate their identities, and not cause further harm.

I am still learning how to be a better ally, so if you want to join me in learning more about transgender and nonbinary identities check out The Trevor Project’s Guide to Being an Ally to Transgender and Nonbinary Youth. It’s an introductory educational resource that covers a wide range of topics, including the differences between sex and gender, and shares best practices on how to support transgender and nonbinary people.

To all the people who now feel that their experience of the books has been tarnished or diminished, I am deeply sorry for the pain these comments have caused you. I really hope that you don’t entirely lose what was valuable in these stories to you. If these books taught you that love is the strongest force in the universe, capable of overcoming anything; if they taught you that strength is found in diversity, and that dogmatic ideas of pureness lead to the oppression of vulnerable groups; if you believe that a particular character is trans, nonbinary, or gender fluid, or that they are gay or bisexual; if you found anything in these stories that resonated with you and helped you at any time in your life — then that is between you and the book that you read, and it is sacred. And in my opinion nobody can touch that. It means to you what it means to you and I hope that these comments will not taint that too much.

Love always,
Dan

if they taught you that strength is found in diversity,

Transwomen increase diversity among men.*
*
and that dogmatic ideas of pureness lead to the oppression of vulnerable groups;

Self-explanatory. But he is oblivious to the oppressive dogma and the vulnerable groups.
*
if you believe that ... or that ... if you found anything in these stories that resonated with you ... then that is between you and the book that you read, and it is sacred.*

Exactly. Your beliefs are personal to you, and nothing to do with anyone else. So why does he think anybody has the right to demand that others believe them or act upon them?

Nitwit.

I'm so disappointed no-one associated with the films has stood up for JK so far.

Where’s Rickman when you need him? RIP Rickman and common sense. ☹️

ItsLateHumpty · 09/06/2020 08:19

It’s the beard. Gives him a sense of his own self importance. Or it’s blocking the blood to his brain.

I agree that feminists would be their allies if this had been handled with better protections for biological fact and our existing rights. Instead we’ve been pitted against a minority group and pilloried as hate speakers.

Waxypotatoes · 09/06/2020 08:20

I think some comments on this are awful. Pick apart DR point of view but don't just tear him apart him personally. I don't have to never question or agree entirely with all politics/beliefs/opinions of a person that gave me a job. This idea he should never say anything against her no matter his beliefs is bananas!
In case it's relevant I agree that trans people should live a life free from discrimination and hatred because of their identity, but that sex is real and this shouldn't come at a cost to women and other groups.
But it's so distasteful to just have a pile on anyone who disagrees with this and write them off as people. It does nothing for furthering your own arguement either.

WhatAWonderfulDay · 09/06/2020 08:21

Why on earth is he apologising on JKR's behalf?!! Stupid bloke.

mathanxiety · 09/06/2020 08:23

It's not entirely because he owes everything to JKR that he is being picked apart here.

It's also because he is a man telling a woman what she can and can't say about her own lived experience.

ATomeOfOnesOwn · 09/06/2020 08:23

They're all perfectly happy to throw women under the bus and it's breathtaking. Where are all the big statements about standing with women? About VAWG statistics? About lack of equal pay, equal representation? I'd be ashamed if my DC grew up to be such a virtue signalling arse as the celebs currently falling over themselves to prove they (a) can't read and (b) don't give a shit about women if they can get shiny woke points.

I'm not sure why the response is TWAW. If anything there should be some kind of statement about TM and menstruation since it affects them and not TW.

Funny how TW are always centred and TM ignored!*

TMAM would indeed have been the appropriate response if anyone was genuinely upset about Rowling's tweet about menstruation. It isn't because they know bloody well tranmen are female and thus automatically shift the focus to the half of the human race whose feelings they think matter.

Spot on, Prodigal.

Those on Twonker and other Social Medias.

Perhaps

#TMAMHereditaryRights

#TMAMHouseOfLords

#TMAMLandowners

#TMAMInheritance

#TransMenMayMenstruateAndInheritanceLawsShouldReflectTMAM

Could start being used.

Just musing.

I’ve always had a bit of a soft spot for DR. I’m so disappointed in him over this.

overworkedandstressed · 09/06/2020 08:26

Identifying as a woman makes you no more of a woman as sitting in a garage makes you a car. Said by my old grandad.
Fuck off Radcliffe you are irrelevant to womans rights.
JK Rowling you are an amazing woman with courage. Legend

DancelikeEmmaGoldman · 09/06/2020 08:27

He doesn’t have to agree with JKR just because she was responsible for his lucky break. But he chose not to call off the attack dogs, make a plea for civility or defend her as a person. So in the interests of his own profile he threw her under the bus.

Even if they can’t stand each other in real life, he could have used his profile to ask for respectful discourse. He’s big on love and kindness until he has to shift his arse to enact it. It’s love Dan unless it might be a bit hard.

HandsOffMyRights · 09/06/2020 08:27

All that magical thinking's gone to his head.
There are no unicorns, Daniel.

attackedbycritters · 09/06/2020 08:27

The statement that transgender are women erases the physical loved reality of those formerly known as women but who gives a toss ?

Does DR really think I want to "identify" as a woman, so saying hey it's ok to rape me, it's ok to overlook me, it's ok to abuse me because chose to identify into that group?

I do not identify as a woman, I am just fucking stuck with being one

VortexofBloggery · 09/06/2020 08:27

When Radcliffe includes a female penis in his heterosexuality, I'll believe him, that he really doesn't know the difference between men & women.

attackedbycritters · 09/06/2020 08:27

Funny how they never say ‘transmen are men’ in these statements or that there is no difference in biology between a pregnant transman and themselves?

happydappy2 · 09/06/2020 08:29

Daniel, HOW are TW women? What magic spell turns a man into a woman??
You have a Mother don’t you....think about the reality of what you are saying.
Also what of the TW that know they are male? You are othering them! Yr on the wrong side here little boy.

merrymouse · 09/06/2020 08:30

This was always going to happen

Eventually somebody would have spotted that Baroness Nicholson is standing up for women's rights and Baroness Nicholson is a co-founder of Lumos.

Even if she hadn't tweeted anything, somebody would have asked JKR to write a similar letter condemning Baroness Nicholson and JKR would have refused - and Daniel Radcliffe would have been asked to write his own letter.

I think the actors will be under huge amounts of pressure to write letters like this, but if the shit really hits the fan, it will force other people off the fence. 'TWAW' just doesn't make sense unless you think 'woman' is just a word for 'somebody who complies with a stereotype'.

PrimalLass · 09/06/2020 08:31

@OhHolyJesus

Daniel Radcliffe is a heterosexual man isn't he? If transwomen are women then he would have sex with one.

It's all stunning and brave until you have to prove you mean what you say, until then it's just words. Maybe he should open his wallet and donate his fortune to trans causes as JRK was asked, no demanded, to do.

Ally in the tweets, terf in the sheets.
PurpleHoodie · 09/06/2020 08:33

I'm more interested in why these twonks never say, or state firstly:

TMAM

TransMenAreMen

Especially when the disussion is around female anatomical functions.

(?)

The numpties up in Scotland changing laws have also massively thrown the Tansmen (females) under the bus.
