Daniel Radcliffe responds to JK Rowling’s tweets: “Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people”

Daniel Radcliffe Responds to J.K. Rowling’s Tweets on Gender Identity – The Trevor Project

FULL STATEMENT

I realize that certain press outlets will probably want to paint this as in-fighting between J.K. Rowling and myself, but that is really not what this is about, nor is it what’s important right now. While Jo is unquestionably responsible for the course my life has taken, as someone who has been honored to work with and continues to contribute to The Trevor Project for the last decade, and just as a human being, I feel compelled to say something at this moment.

Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against all advice given by professional health care associations who have far more expertise on this subject matter than either Jo or I. According to The Trevor Project, 78% of transgender and nonbinary youth reported being the subject of discrimination due to their gender identity. It’s clear that we need to do more to support transgender and nonbinary people, not invalidate their identities, and not cause further harm.

I am still learning how to be a better ally, so if you want to join me in learning more about transgender and nonbinary identities check out The Trevor Project’s Guide to Being an Ally to Transgender and Nonbinary Youth. It’s an introductory educational resource that covers a wide range of topics, including the differences between sex and gender, and shares best practices on how to support transgender and nonbinary people.

To all the people who now feel that their experience of the books has been tarnished or diminished, I am deeply sorry for the pain these comments have caused you. I really hope that you don’t entirely lose what was valuable in these stories to you. If these books taught you that love is the strongest force in the universe, capable of overcoming anything; if they taught you that strength is found in diversity, and that dogmatic ideas of pureness lead to the oppression of vulnerable groups; if you believe that a particular character is trans, nonbinary, or gender fluid, or that they are gay or bisexual; if you found anything in these stories that resonated with you and helped you at any time in your life — then that is between you and the book that you read, and it is sacred. And in my opinion nobody can touch that. It means to you what it means to you and I hope that these comments will not taint that too much.

Love always,
Dan

I totally agree.
This is the project in which he is involved:
ABOUT THE TREVOR PROJECT
Founded in 1998 by the creators of the Academy Award®-winning short film TREVOR, The Trevor Project is the leading national organization providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer & questioning (LGBTQ) young people under 25.

And that is where I saw his statement www.thetrevorproject.org/2020/06/08/daniel-radcliffe-responds-to-j-k-rowlings-tweets-on-gender-identity/

If he's genuinely been involved in that group for years, then it makes sense that he would have had to make some sort of statement on the situation with JKR - but I'm still massively disappointed in what he said.

She doesn't need to be a fucking medical doctor to know that she is a woman, that women are women, that women's biology is biology - her statements were factual. Ok the one about menstruation was a little pokey, but the rest have been factual.

I'm still waiting to see if Emma "I'm wearing a #TWAW tee shirt" Watson will join the fray as well, or if she's worked it out yet.

DisobedientHamster · 09/06/2020 05:42

She must be livid reading that.

I hope not. She's wise. It's probably more hurtful rather than anger-inducing. That MEN are not coming forth and standing up for the FACT the biological sex tells you ALL you need to know about this entire issue. They don't have to, they already have that privilege.

JustTurtlesAllTheWayDown · 09/06/2020 05:45

I have lost any shred of respect for him. Disgraceful.

langclegflavoredbananamush · 09/06/2020 05:45

So pathetic that he can say he feels “deeply sorry for the pain these comments have caused you” without so much as a “but some of you are going a bit overboard with the insults.”
This is someone he’s known personally since he was young, and he’s completely indifferent to the abuse that’s being piled on her. I wonder how he thinks he could ever look her in the face again.

ukgift2016 · 09/06/2020 05:47

How dare he?

A privilege, short twerp. Like Piers Morgan loving the praise from the extreme lefties.

DancelikeEmmaGoldman · 09/06/2020 05:48

I suppose the upside for JKR is that it makes deciding who to invite to dinner parties that much easier.

DR: “Jo, how come I didn’t get an invitation to your last dinner party? Rupert went and said you had chocolate cake.”

JKR: “But Dan, it just -identified- as a dinner party-, it was really just eggs on toast with deliciousness confusion.”

Stuffofawesome · 09/06/2020 05:50

Wanker. He owes everything to JKW

DisobedientHamster · 09/06/2020 05:51

Ok the one about menstruation was a little pokey, but the rest have been factual.

Not at all, transmen take hormones to suppress menstruation; only women menstruate. Even that is factual.

Period poverty, forced arranged marriage, honour killings, death in childbirth, these things happen to women (females old enough to menstruate).

Stating that sex does not exist denigrates every single one of those experiences which are happening every day and smacks of disgusting first world snotty misogyny.

To say otherwise is not just foolery but just that, woman-hating bullshit.

DisobedientHamster · 09/06/2020 05:56

Wanker. He owes everything to JKW

And therein lies his privilege. As Sojourner Truth said, 'Well, where your Christ come from? From God and a woman, man didn't have nothing to do with it!' or 'Man, where was your part?'

Blackdoggotmytonguestill · 09/06/2020 05:57

Middle class white boy doesn’t give a fuck about women, wants to flush their rights down the toilet? Quelle surprise.

ArfArfBarf · 09/06/2020 06:01

So many people on Twitter excited that a man has shown up to tell us how to define women.

DisobedientHamster · 09/06/2020 06:03

So there you have it, Mr Radcliffe is happy to co-opt work that is not his to line his own purse and push his own agenda of woman-hating bollocks, because anyone who believes the biology of being a female is something we make up in our pretty little heads is a misogynist, and he is happy to stand abusive misogynist comments to that effect in his own milieu.

RoosterPie · 09/06/2020 06:03

So disappointing.

miri1985 · 09/06/2020 06:09

Thinking that you have the right to apologise on another adults behalf is the height of arrogance.

"Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against all advice given by professional health care associations who have far more expertise on this subject matter than either Jo or I."

Firstly he has no idea how much expertise she has on the subject and hes admitted hes talking out of his arse.

If a study was done that found that actual women felt the statement TWAW went against their identity and dignity, then what? Because it definitely goes against my identity and dignity to have my sex redefined. Also what are these studies that say affirmation only is the way to help, I've never heard of them

Mummyoflittledragon · 09/06/2020 06:15

Vile vile. Middle class jumped up little boy.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 09/06/2020 06:15

Yes, he's using his connection to her to boost his own currently not exactly sparkling career, by manplaining what women are "allowed" to think to her. And also pretending that he understands the books she wrote better than she does.

I've never been very impressed with him but it turns out that a low opinion can always get lower.

SophocIestheFox · 09/06/2020 06:16

You’d get chucked out of Gryffindor for being such a spineless backstabber, Dan.

mathanxiety · 09/06/2020 06:18

Daniel who?

langclegflavoredbananamush · 09/06/2020 06:21

You’d get chucked out of Gryffindor for being such a spineless backstabber, Dan.

I dunno. Peter Pettigrew never got kicked out.

Dances · 09/06/2020 06:22

It really doesn't matter. The more attention this gets, the better. The general public are not wokesters

SophocIestheFox · 09/06/2020 06:27

I dunno. Peter Pettigrew never got kicked out

Fair point. He got his comeuppance though.

DomDoesWotHeWants · 09/06/2020 06:33

He'd be nothing without her. I hope his words come back to haunt him. Little shit.

HollowTalk · 09/06/2020 06:33

Just another man telling women to put up and shut up.

PrimalLass · 09/06/2020 06:34

All they care about is other males. Full stop.

Mollyollydolly · 09/06/2020 06:36

What a weak man he is. So scared of getting cancelled. He owes everything to her. He could have at least had the balls to say nothing.
