Daniel Radcliffe responds to JK Rowling’s tweets: “Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people”

Daniel Radcliffe Responds to J.K. Rowling’s Tweets on Gender Identity – The Trevor Project

FULL STATEMENT

I realize that certain press outlets will probably want to paint this as in-fighting between J.K. Rowling and myself, but that is really not what this is about, nor is it what’s important right now. While Jo is unquestionably responsible for the course my life has taken, as someone who has been honored to work with and continues to contribute to The Trevor Project for the last decade, and just as a human being, I feel compelled to say something at this moment.

Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against all advice given by professional health care associations who have far more expertise on this subject matter than either Jo or I. According to The Trevor Project, 78% of transgender and nonbinary youth reported being the subject of discrimination due to their gender identity. It’s clear that we need to do more to support transgender and nonbinary people, not invalidate their identities, and not cause further harm.

I am still learning how to be a better ally, so if you want to join me in learning more about transgender and nonbinary identities check out The Trevor Project’s Guide to Being an Ally to Transgender and Nonbinary Youth. It’s an introductory educational resource that covers a wide range of topics, including the differences between sex and gender, and shares best practices on how to support transgender and nonbinary people.

To all the people who now feel that their experience of the books has been tarnished or diminished, I am deeply sorry for the pain these comments have caused you. I really hope that you don’t entirely lose what was valuable in these stories to you. If these books taught you that love is the strongest force in the universe, capable of overcoming anything; if they taught you that strength is found in diversity, and that dogmatic ideas of pureness lead to the oppression of vulnerable groups; if you believe that a particular character is trans, nonbinary, or gender fluid, or that they are gay or bisexual; if you found anything in these stories that resonated with you and helped you at any time in your life — then that is between you and the book that you read, and it is sacred. And in my opinion nobody can touch that. It means to you what it means to you and I hope that these comments will not taint that too much.

Love always,
Dan

There it is. The dictatorial dictate of the #no debate, cancel culture hive mind. It operates in absolutes, issues slogans that are tautologies and denounces even tremulous dissent as a crime. Anyone who dares to question this is responsible for 'erasing' Trans people. But Daniel is 'still learning ' and soon his education will be complete. No other viewpoint or rational discourse or contemplation of the practical, philosophical implications of this slogan will be tolerated.

@TheProdigalKittensReturn

TMAM would indeed have been the appropriate response if anyone was genuinely upset about Rowling's tweet about menstruation. It isn't because they know bloody well tranmen are female and thus automatically shift the focus to the half of the human race whose feelings they think matter.
This. Once again, out of nowhere, a man centres other men, when she was actually speaking of women. Why didn't he say TMAM and menstruate too? That would have been relevant to her tweet. But no. It HAS to be about men. When will it end?
Standrewsschool · 09/06/2020 07:11

I have no wish to erase the dignity or identity of a trans woman. However, women are women, and trans women are not biologically women. Saying this doesn’t remove the dignity of anyone, but accepting that sex and gender are two different things.

It really doesn't matter. The more attention this gets, the better. The general public are not wokesters

I'm not sure I agree with this. The problem is women are being shamed for speaking out and even voicing an opinion. I've experienced this from other women just for saying that trans women can't compete as women in competitive sports, certainly above a certain level as it erases women from competing. And yet somehow it's okay to erase women's rights overnight.

Can you not see a creeping of males creating new women’s world records, women’s spaces in political parties, women’s awards and so on? You’d have to be a very entitled misogynist to think this is okay.

This.

Also can anyone see the irony of the fact that so many women are vilified for saying u have to be female to be a woman, still accepting transwomen's rights in many areas to pass as a woman. And yet it's really men who are harassing, beating up and abusing transgender people (and women and other men) , not in fact women at all. And yet no one has a go at men for this. It's just women that get all the stick for hurting their feelings. But where's the real problem.

BashStreetKid · 09/06/2020 07:14

The suggestion that my dignity and identity is in any way compromised by calling a transgender woman a woman is manifestly absurd.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 09/06/2020 07:14

"TWAW" sounds like a religious chant at this point. There's a liturgy and they're all reciting from it and strangely enough it's all about the penis enabled.

CourtneyLurve · 09/06/2020 07:16

Stealing from LSA:

If they're women, date one.

FavouriteFightingFrenchman · 09/06/2020 07:19

I wonder how it would have gone if there had been a tweet

Company: 'Assistance for people with erectile dysfunction after Covid-19'

Celeb: 'people? You mean men! Only men have penises!'

Company: eh, yeah guess so

WokeStasi: don't even notice

Chiochan · 09/06/2020 07:20

@NemesiaPinkLagoonemesia

meh, its the only thought or feeling Iv ever had about Daniel Radcliff

Well, until today when he went public with his very relaxed attitude to misogeny.

BovaryX · 09/06/2020 07:24

It really is ironic, isn't it? Because identity politics is predicated upon a pyramid of oppression in which trans are at the very apex of suffering. Yet questioning any part of the orthodoxy results in being sacked, like Maya Forstater or getting a visit from the cops, like Harry Miller. Academics who question it require bodyguards like Selina Todd. Multinationals eagerly line up to embrace the slogan. And those who question the slogan are denounced. To wield such power while claiming to have none takes something more than Doublethink.

Dozer · 09/06/2020 07:25

Assume that Dan Radcliffe doesn’t compete in women’s sports, or use women’s services or facilities.

He lives part of the time in NYC, where public toilets are no longer single sex (big signs warning of punishment if girls or women “harass” “transwomen” users) so already has the option to use those!

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 09/06/2020 07:27

Since I'm not a Potter fan (Rowling seems like a lovely person but I was too old for the books when they came out and am more of a Pratchett person) Daniel Radcliffe was always been "that kid who was in those films that I never watched and who doesn't seem to have done anything much since" to me. So I'm seeing this as him playing to the only market he really has (and assuming that the angry anime avatars on Twitter represent that market - he may be right, since people who love the books but don't care about the films are unlikely to care if he's ever cast in anything else).

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 09/06/2020 07:29

Yay a male has come along to to tell us females that biology no longer matters

If only we would stfu and let society be dictated by males as it always has been

ShiveringCoyote · 09/06/2020 07:34

Trans women do not get to erase women's history of struggle and oppression anymore than white people can erase the slave trade.

Fluffycloudland77 · 09/06/2020 07:38

Well I’m really glad he mansplained that to us Hmm.

truthisarevolutionaryact · 09/06/2020 07:42

If Mr Radcliffe wants a baby it will never come from a transwoman - no matter how many times he chants the mantra TWAW.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 09/06/2020 07:43

What’s he doing these days? Work wise.

SophocIestheFox · 09/06/2020 07:45

Dunno, Learning how to walk in heels? Having his spine removed because their all so terrified to disagree with anyone who might say their not 100% woke.
OkMaybeNot · 09/06/2020 07:48

He's been very careful not to accuse her of being transphobic, or saying transphobic things.

Yet it's clearly an attempt to side with her attackers on this.

OhHolyJesus · 09/06/2020 07:51

Daniel Radcliffe is a heterosexual man isn't he? If transwomen are women then he would have sex with one.

It's all stunning and brave until you have to prove you mean what you say, until then it's just words. Maybe he should open his wallet and donate his fortune to trans causes as JRK was asked, no demanded, to do.

StealthPolarBear · 09/06/2020 07:52

I'm not keen on the comments about his work and the fact she gave him his big break. He's allowed to have his opinions and would be if he was unemployed.
That said, I agree he may be exploiting this to improve his image.

Oxyiz · 09/06/2020 07:53

Ah what an attention-seeking little twerp.

I wouldn't have expected anything less in terms of his opinions though - he's a rich, white, privileged actor who has been surrounded by luvvies and sheltered from real life since he was a little boy. In some ways he was probably fucked up for life by the industry and the way it swallowed him whole as a child.

How on earth could he possibly understand life as a normal human woman, like Jo had to before she suddenly got famous?
