Daniel Radcliffe responds to JK Rowling’s tweets: “Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people”

Daniel Radcliffe Responds to J.K. Rowling’s Tweets on Gender Identity – The Trevor Project

FULL STATEMENT

I realize that certain press outlets will probably want to paint this as in-fighting between J.K. Rowling and myself, but that is really not what this is about, nor is it what’s important right now. While Jo is unquestionably responsible for the course my life has taken, as someone who has been honored to work with and continues to contribute to The Trevor Project for the last decade, and just as a human being, I feel compelled to say something at this moment.

Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against all advice given by professional health care associations who have far more expertise on this subject matter than either Jo or I. According to The Trevor Project, 78% of transgender and nonbinary youth reported being the subject of discrimination due to their gender identity. It’s clear that we need to do more to support transgender and nonbinary people, not invalidate their identities, and not cause further harm.

I am still learning how to be a better ally, so if you want to join me in learning more about transgender and nonbinary identities check out The Trevor Project’s Guide to Being an Ally to Transgender and Nonbinary Youth. It’s an introductory educational resource that covers a wide range of topics, including the differences between sex and gender, and shares best practices on how to support transgender and nonbinary people.

To all the people who now feel that their experience of the books has been tarnished or diminished, I am deeply sorry for the pain these comments have caused you. I really hope that you don’t entirely lose what was valuable in these stories to you. If these books taught you that love is the strongest force in the universe, capable of overcoming anything; if they taught you that strength is found in diversity, and that dogmatic ideas of pureness lead to the oppression of vulnerable groups; if you believe that a particular character is trans, nonbinary, or gender fluid, or that they are gay or bisexual; if you found anything in these stories that resonated with you and helped you at any time in your life — then that is between you and the book that you read, and it is sacred. And in my opinion nobody can touch that. It means to you what it means to you and I hope that these comments will not taint that too much.

Love always,
Dan

I think his ego needed tickling. Quite simple.
I’m confident 100% or not far off of women suffer sexual discrimination, harassment, rape or violence based on that they are women. If they are lucky it will just be 1 or 2 of above. Does that matter? The young girls that have to go through genital mutilation and forced marriage? Because that are in fact females? Girls and women can’t identify out of these, yet boys and men can identify their way into their sanctuaries.
I was stalked by my ex who beat me and raped me. Police didn’t have resources to do anything about it, yet mis-gendering someone is a violent crime. Have you not noticed the difference in treatment in how police react? What about when women meetings are attacked and harassed and police stand there doing nothing?
Can you not see a creeping of males creating new women’s world records, women’s spaces in political parties, women’s awards and so on? You’d have to be a very entitled misogynist to think this is okay.
Biological sex is everything, identify is pishposh. But it’s easy to get on board with trans ideology. It’s a nice bushy beard to hide behind. it’s homophobic (denying the right to same sex attraction), it’s sexist, it’s misogynistic. There’s the grooming of children too. I would argue the comparisons to black peoples and minority ethnicity racist, I certainly find it offensive. So Mr Radcliffe, is it just one of these that draws you in, or all of the above?

PaddlingPoolAgain · 09/06/2020 06:46

Transwomen are men appropriating womanhood.

How DARE a man pretend that's ok! They'd be up in arms at people blacking up for eg., why is this ok?

lubeybooby · 09/06/2020 06:47

Bravo Dan!

Antibles · 09/06/2020 06:50

Urgh. What an idiot.

I believe people DO understand but are deliberately misunderstanding. I agree EddyF. Wilful misunderstanding.

Tulipstulips · 09/06/2020 06:52

Danial Radcliffe mansplains what women are. I have zero interest on what any man says or thinks about the nature of women vs transwomen.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 09/06/2020 06:54

It's not just the desire for ego strokes, I'd assume he's hoping for a career boost since he hasn't exactly been in high demand recently. That might be why Emma Watson hasn't said anything yet, though she probably will - her career is going much better.

Lamahaha · 09/06/2020 06:54

"Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against all advice given by professional health care associations who have far more expertise on this subject matter than either Jo or I."

Ugh. What stands out the most in this sentence is the bad grammar. It's "...either Jo or I," Dan.

I haven't read the HP books except the first one which I read with my 10 year old daughter long before the whole thing went viral. I thought it was a good kid's book but never felt inclined to read the others.

I've never been one to care about the sayings or deeds of famous actors, much less one younger than my children. He's an actor: that's it. She has created worlds with her book and brought children to love reading -- that's magnificent.

These words of his: love is the strongest force in the universe, capable of overcoming anything are true, the only true words in that whole little "announcement". He learnt these truths from Joanne. She is wise, Dan; she taught you this. Why aren't you listening?

Older women, mothers especially, are wiser than you. Open your ears and stop listening to the baying crowd.

BringbackLang · 09/06/2020 06:54

He wouldn't have a career if it wasn't for JKR. He's not particularly good at acting in any case. So get lost Daniel -what a woman is is it for the likes of you to decide.

Lamahaha · 09/06/2020 06:55

Ha! I left out the most important point about grammar: It's either Jo or me, not either Jo or I.

NemesiaPinkLagoon · 09/06/2020 06:55

@Chiochan

*On an entirely unrelated note. Does anyone else here get irritated by physically unattractive actors taking up space on our screens?

I know its wrong but there is a small part of me that, whenever I'm consuming our designated 'entertainment' that includes an actor that's a bit ugly, feels 'as we're forced to watch these narcists faf about, they should at least be good looking'.

Its bad I know*.

Yes it's bad. Also strange and stupid and really nasty.

BringbackLang · 09/06/2020 06:56

Isn't for the likes not is Hmm

Flippetydip · 09/06/2020 06:58

Transwomen are men appropriating womanhood. How DARE a man pretend that's ok! They'd be up in arms at people blacking up for eg., why is this ok?

Yes, this, I have never understood this and when I've asked the question have been shot down. I usually stay very quiet on this board but I am so grateful you are all here.

StealthPolarBear · 09/06/2020 06:59

It's actually "Jo or me"
This is infuriating. Hopefully she will set him straight, publicly.

StealthPolarBear · 09/06/2020 06:59

Cross post with others making the same grammatical point :o

Lamahaha · 09/06/2020 06:59

@Mollyollydolly

What a weak man he is. So scared of getting cancelled. He owes everything to her. He could have at least had the balls to say nothing.
This. Plucked out of nowhere, would have been nobody, but for her. Tell me again why his word, now, should be listened to rather than hers?
TheProdigalKittensReturn · 09/06/2020 07:00

Also, I honestly don't give a flying fuck what any man thinks about who should or should not be considered a woman, especially not when the man in question is young enough to be my son and not exactly radiating a depth of life experience and the wisdom resulting from it. It's basically "self focused young man thinks women should be quiet and do what he says, and also someone please hire me I'm very woke (don't give a shit about women but hey, neither does anyone else in Hollywood), honest".

Ickabog · 09/06/2020 07:00

It's not just the desire for ego strokes, I'd assume he's hoping for a career boost since he hasn't exactly been in high demand recently.

Agreed. He made the statement as it was clear from all the hated being spewed at Jo, that his opposing opinion would be strongly praised on twatter and various media outlets.

I suspect if he ends up in another film or project this statement will be bought up in any promotional articles / interviews.

Gingerkittykat · 09/06/2020 07:01

I'm not sure why the response is TWAW. If anything there should be some kind of statement about TM and menstruation since it affects them and not TW.

Funny how TW are always centred and TM ignored!

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 09/06/2020 07:01

Urgh. Disappointing.

Saltovinegar · 09/06/2020 07:03

Funny how none of these men parroting TWAW are actually in a relationship with a trans woman.

To paraphrase a long ago mocked tweet they obviously consider they are women except for relationship purposes.

Fanthorpe · 09/06/2020 07:03

Incredibly privileged young male person gives away the rights of natal women to appease his audience. Same as it ever was.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 09/06/2020 07:04

TMAM would indeed have been the appropriate response if anyone was genuinely upset about Rowling's tweet about menstruation. It isn't because they know bloody well tranmen are female and thus automatically shift the focus to the half of the human race whose feelings they think matter.

Lamahaha · 09/06/2020 07:07

@StealthPolarBear

It's actually "Jo or me" This is infuriating. Hopefully she will set him straight, publicly.
Yes! That's what I wanted to say and missed the most important part!
FavouriteFightingFrenchman · 09/06/2020 07:09

I've just joined Twitter in order to tweet my support for JK. It won't matter one jot but I can't let her be criticised without knowing she has some supporters.

I'm also really interested in an explanation about the 'living as a black person does not change your race' thing in the same way as 'living as a woman does not change your sex'. OP you mentioned that it's not an accurate comparison - can you explain why?

megletthesecond · 09/06/2020 07:09

Looking forward to DR explaining how TWAW without using feelings, opinions, emotions, hobbies or clothes Hmm.
He's not actually considered the words he's typing has he.
