Daniel Radcliffe responds to JK Rowling’s tweets: “Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people”

Daniel Radcliffe Responds to J.K. Rowling’s Tweets on Gender Identity – The Trevor Project

FULL STATEMENT

I realize that certain press outlets will probably want to paint this as in-fighting between J.K. Rowling and myself, but that is really not what this is about, nor is it what’s important right now. While Jo is unquestionably responsible for the course my life has taken, as someone who has been honored to work with and continues to contribute to The Trevor Project for the last decade, and just as a human being, I feel compelled to say something at this moment.

Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against all advice given by professional health care associations who have far more expertise on this subject matter than either Jo or I. According to The Trevor Project, 78% of transgender and nonbinary youth reported being the subject of discrimination due to their gender identity. It’s clear that we need to do more to support transgender and nonbinary people, not invalidate their identities, and not cause further harm.

I am still learning how to be a better ally, so if you want to join me in learning more about transgender and nonbinary identities check out The Trevor Project’s Guide to Being an Ally to Transgender and Nonbinary Youth. It’s an introductory educational resource that covers a wide range of topics, including the differences between sex and gender, and shares best practices on how to support transgender and nonbinary people.

To all the people who now feel that their experience of the books has been tarnished or diminished, I am deeply sorry for the pain these comments have caused you. I really hope that you don’t entirely lose what was valuable in these stories to you. If these books taught you that love is the strongest force in the universe, capable of overcoming anything; if they taught you that strength is found in diversity, and that dogmatic ideas of pureness lead to the oppression of vulnerable groups; if you believe that a particular character is trans, nonbinary, or gender fluid, or that they are gay or bisexual; if you found anything in these stories that resonated with you and helped you at any time in your life — then that is between you and the book that you read, and it is sacred. And in my opinion nobody can touch that. It means to you what it means to you and I hope that these comments will not taint that too much.

Love always,
Dan

Who give a chuff Evanna. The grown ups are disappointed in your nonsense. It won’t get you any more/better acting jobs. And - newsflash - the industry is very fickle so prepare to reap the whirlwind.

Evanna Lynch has spoken out now and she is 'deeply saddened' about JKR's remarks...
Who? Never heard of them.

The movies are guaranteed to get remade in the next few years. It used to amaze me how quickly films looked dated and past their best, these early 2000s movies are no different. There will be a younger replacement team along shortly and Radcliffe et al will be a historical footnote. Won't be long. Meanwhile the author will be famous forever.

Lordfrontpaw · 09/06/2020 20:57

I hadn’t heard of a lot of these kiddies but then I’ve never watched a HP film - not really a fan. Who cares about a load of daft kids who live on their luvvie bubble until their careers dry up.

The women do realise that once they hit 30 it’s likely to be curtains for them don’t they?

YourVagesty · 09/06/2020 20:59

Deeply saddened?! Deeply fucking saddened?!

Yeah I'm saddened that I have to have periods but then I'm female so it's par for the course (barring medical conditions). I am not, and never will be, deeply saddened that men can't ever menstruate, or that they find it offensive to point out FUCKING BIOLOGY!

GOD I'M PISSED OFF.

Yup! And getting slatted for only talking about trans for 1/3 of the statement, while saying that JKR is still a good person. They are gunning for her, because she just didn’t try he MRAs enough and should stay out of it, unless she’s 100% against JKR. Apparently the only good ‘cis’ 🙄 is one who will completely support trans identifying people and completely denigrate those that don’t. There is no grey area, as far as they are concerned. Oh dear. What a pity. She just hasn’t capitulated hard enough. She’d better get out the sack clothe and ashes now. I feel so sorry for you, Evanna.

From Evanna Lynch wikipedia page -
During this time, Lynch often wrote to Harry Potter author J. K. Rowling, of whom she was a fan, and came to think of as a counsellor after receiving many replies in which Rowling told her that anorexia was "destructive, not creative", and helped Lynch through recovery.

During a hospitalization, Lynch feared that she would miss the release of the fifth Harry Potter book, but the hospital released her for one hour the morning of the book release, and it was arranged for her to receive a copy of the book signed by J.K. Rowling herself-the first time Lynch met Rowling in person. Rowling continued correspondence with Lynch, encouraging her to get better. When Lynch expressed an interest in playing Luna Lovegood in the upcoming Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix movie, Rowling told Lynch she would first have to get better. Lynch is now in recovery from her eating disorder, citing Rowling as a counsellor in getting better and saying that the Harry Potter series helped her to take her mind of her struggles, and that the character of Luna inspired her to come to terms with herself and beat her disease.

After all Rowling did for her she stabs her in the back publicly. Shame on them all

I actually think a television series would be better. I'm thinking it can be a Netflix series and there could be seven seasons (one per book). They could fit more in that way Smile.

Nah, thats only boring old cis women.

Not extra special non binary snowflakes. Those never go out of date.

Collidascope · 09/06/2020 21:03

"deeply saddened"
What an absolute weapon.

What an absolute weasel. Shame on her.
Oxyiz · 09/06/2020 21:04

Jesus why didn't Evanna just stay quiet? Take the lead from Emma FFS. Cowardly, yes, but better than getting gunned down by the Internet mob who are baying for blood. Who's advising these celebs?

No that’s all women. Really. You can’t opt out of being a woman. You are not ‘untouchable’. Sorry luv.

Unless of course she is an exceptional actress 🤣

Michelleoftheresistance · 09/06/2020 21:06

I am so deeply saddened by this. It's like the world is walking back into the dark ages.

The future is going to be the hidden, silenced excluding and harming of vulnerable female humans, the damaging of female boundaries and rights, in order to promote the importance and happiness and wonderfulness of male humans. No one will be allowed to talk about it. No one will be allowed to admit it. Everyone will be compelled to pretend it isn't happening, while emphasising how wonderful it all is.

The shattering selfishness of these males, the absolute belief that they are more important than the people they identify as being, their utter inability to care for anything but themselves or to accept ways that meet everyones needs instead of just their own.... it's unbelievable. And we're supposed to applaud it. Embrace it. Enable it by hiding the consequences and harm to females.

This is a God-awful future, it's dystopic.

Evanna Lynch said that she and JKR were still pen pals. That was in 2016. That just makes it even worse. Surely things can't have changed that much since then?

Tootletum · 09/06/2020 21:09

Trans rights comes across a creepy lobby group that doesnt want rights for themselves, but wants to remove rights from women. Outside Twitter world I suspect 90% of the population agrees, and yet big brands seem to think they have to cater to the imagined hurts of

FFSFFSFFS · 09/06/2020 21:09

Well Evanna Lynch in her comments wrote that "ciswomen" are a minority.

Last time I checked women where just a dash over 50% of the population.

I think by "minority" she meant "non women". Or "the group of people who are less important than men"

Datun · 09/06/2020 21:09

@OldCrone

For anyone who didn't click on FantaOra's links, this is Sam Brinton, founder of the Trevor Project. I doubt they care about lesbians hypernormal.
I doubt it too.

Are they a lesbian?

FFSFFSFFS · 09/06/2020 21:10

oh FFS

"by minority" she meant "non men".

CaraDune · 09/06/2020 21:10

For @Justjoshin22 and others new to this, someone's just posted this thread:
excelpope.wordpress.com/2020/06/09/northerner-illuminates/

The summary is "Previously, on gender wars." You won't feel any less confused, but it may brighten your mood slightly.

Shedbuilder · 09/06/2020 21:10

Tell your friends, JustJoshin. Tell all your friends. It's Men's Activism. It's men's revenge for all the advances women have made over the last 100 years.

Lordfrontpaw · 09/06/2020 21:10

TooOldForSims - I’m sure she has a raft of projects waiting that are sure to win her an Oscar. Wouldn’t it be sad if she lost a female role/ award to a trans woman?
