Well, not branded as story hour, but the drag queen is reading a story to primary school children... Brought in by an MP (Mhairi Black)

“Thank you to Flow and @MhairiBlack for sharing their experiences with us today. It was really important to hear about Section 28 and the negative effect it had. Thankfully now we teach #LGBTEducation proudly at @Glencoats_PS #LGBTQProud @LGBTYS @LGBTHistoryScot

Scott Cuthbertson who wrote the indy article is a holy horror. He's been attacking the poetry library because they said they were opposed to bullying & harassment (there's been a vicious campaign against some poets over this). He's "disturbed" because they aren't supporting witch hunts. He's a nasty man.

AnneOfTeenFables · 27/02/2020 16:21

Speaking of the Scottish Poetry Library if any of you are on Twitter, it might be nice to support them and like and retweet their tweets about the conflict between freedom of speech and no-platforming, and about how they won't condone bullying.

Alicethroughtheblackmirror · 27/02/2020 20:32

Anne that's an excellent idea!

ScrimshawTheSecond · 27/02/2020 21:57

SPL are also on facebook, and posted the same or similar posts. There's been a wee bit of moaning that refusing to no-platform people is fascism, or something, but most people I would say are supportive of their stance.

Lordfrontpaw · 27/02/2020 22:04

What have they done?

DidoLamenting · 27/02/2020 23:23

I can't make head nor tail of what has been going on at the Scottish Poetry Library. They have been having public spats for the last 2 or 3 years with resignations and flouncing and accusations of bullying/racism.

Lordfrontpaw · 27/02/2020 23:29

From what I can see it’s something about their no platform of policy. Unlike the Glasgow woman’s library (the weasels).

WaxOnFeckOff · 28/02/2020 00:36

This all links into the failed "named person" scheme where the judges ruling specifically referred to the wrongs of attempting to remove individual parents views from the upbringing of children.

Mhairi Black has and always will be an utter gobshite but then I'm no fan of the SNP (as you can probably tell)

AnneOfTeenFables · 28/02/2020 12:55

Certain people including poets have been trying to get gender critical poets no-platformed from events. They've been orchestrating online pile-ons, harassing poetry/spoken word festivals to drop anyone vaguely gender critical, and bullying other high-profile poets and writers to stop associating with the ones who are gender critical.

The SPL has said they champion free speech, they won't no-platform people and they won't condone any bullying, pile-ons, etc. They are getting lots of abuse for it on Twitter and in RL afaik because they haven't simply capitulated to the bullies. They also made the point libraries in Canada had been bullied into trying to drop events and speakers, but people would be wasting their time trying to push the SPL to do the same.
It's quite brave of them imo

DidoLamenting · 28/02/2020 13:01

Where are you getting that from and what on earth has it got to do with the resignations Liz Lochhead and other poets because of , as they claim, the bullying culture within SPL since the appointment of Asif Khan as director?

Tootsweets23 · 28/02/2020 14:32

@waxonfeckoff not a fan either! The names person concept was so fucked up, and showed really poor judgment and a lack of respect for parents. They seem to view the electorate as feckless irresponsible bigots across quite a number of policies.

The internal warfare of the SNP is something to behold. Hard to view MB on the front bench this week as anything other than a statement of the bigger leadership battle rather than this drag queen story in isolation.

There is quite a scenario that Boris Johnson could play - He announces formally no self ID in England and Wales. Sturgeon pushes ahead in Scotland, bringing her into conflict with the equality act which is reserved. BJ steps in, and portrays himself as the protector of Scottish women and girls. Which would be electorally popular (the policy, not BJ himself!). Puts Sturgeon in a very difficult position, especially against the backdrop of restless independence activists and the Salmond court case.

AnneOfTeenFables · 28/02/2020 15:07

The previous resignations aren't connected to the statement they've put out Dido.
This week's statement is connected to bullying that has been directed at gc members of the board as well as gc poets booked for events, and attempts to get other 'personalities' to denounce them or be targeted as guilty by association. I'd say you could follow it on Twitter but at least one of the gc poets has deleted their account. However, some of the TRA responses are on the SPL account.

Alicethroughtheblackmirror · 28/02/2020 15:41

Report on Poetry Library in National. Apparently TRAs are "extremely distressed' because they've been told it's not acceptable to bully, no-platform and try to get contacts cancelled. Poor loves.

Lordfrontpaw · 28/02/2020 15:43

So they are distraught at being told to 'be nice'?

Igneococcus · 29/02/2020 07:36

Times Scotland article today on SPL and GWL:

Lordfrontpaw · 29/02/2020 07:50

Weasels.

Datun · 29/02/2020 07:58

The letter stated: “It seems clear to us that there is a serious lack of understanding of trans rights, women’s rights (which are trans women’s rights), transphobia and misogyny (which affects trans women) at the Scottish Poetry Library, and that this informed your statement.”

Breathtaking. And utterly blind. Because as only men can be transwomen and transmen aren't demanding rights from men, what it actually says is

The letter stated: “It seems clear to us that there is a serious lack of understanding of men's rights, women’s rights (which are men's rights)...

littlbrowndog · 29/02/2020 08:44

“It is a contagion of hysteria.” Referring to the American body set up to investigate alleged disloyalty and subversion, the friend added: “The closest thing I can think of is the House Un-American Affairs Committee. It is a witch-hunt based on nothing.”
