Drag Queen Story Hour in Scottish Primary School

Well, not branded as story hour, but the drag queen is reading a story to primary school children... Brought in by an MP (Mhairi Black)

“Thank you to Flow and @MhairiBlack for sharing their experiences with us today. It was really important to hear about Section 28 and the negative effect it had. Thankfully now we teach #LGBTEducation proudly at @Glencoats_PS #LGBTQProud @LGBTYS @LGBTHistoryScot

Conflating drag with homosexuality is so confusing for children. I'm an adult and even I am confused as to the relevance of this. We should be presenting lesbian and gay relationships as entirely normal, not as part of a "culture" or a "kink". Why is it that so few people get this?

OhHolyJesus · 23/02/2020 09:41

Can we look forward to a female fight fighter doing the same or having a blind person read it from a Braille book?

Thinkingabout1t · 23/02/2020 09:50

Why a drag queen? ‘Drag queen story time’ has only started happening very recently. It can’t be a coincidence that it’s happened while transgenderists are pushing to blur the boundaries between male and female. So it looks like another way of confusing children.

Section 28 opposed homosexuality - not transgenderism, which wasn’t a thing back then.

It’s now transgender rights activists who are oppressing homosexuals, by branding the new Lesbian Gay & Bisexual Alliance a hate group and demanding the right for male-bodied people to have sex with lesbians, as if anyone has the right to demand sexual services from anyone.

When I was a kid it was always young and enthusiastic student drama groups who would come in and get us all to pretend to be robots or dinosaurs.

RunSkipJump · 23/02/2020 09:55

The HT's Twitter account has now been locked.

Babdoc · 23/02/2020 10:03

I wonder if the parents were warned in advance and given the opportunity to withdraw their DC from this? They should be livid if not. Thankfully, it wasn’t an issue when mine were at primary, and their HT would have had no truck with this stuff.

NotBadConsidering · 23/02/2020 10:11

Jeez, Mhairi Black again. Only cares about herself, can’t think more widely about the effects her stance on children. Still waiting for her to go and tell those girls down the road who were sexually assaulted by Katie Dolatowski that they’re bigots for not wanting a transwoman to “pee next to me”.

charlestonchaplin · 23/02/2020 10:18

Everyone is going after the children.

andyoldlabour · 23/02/2020 10:25

charlestonchaplin

Do you remember Rachel McKinnon's "glitter family" youtube video, where they were almost encouraging young children to break away from their family?

DidoLamenting · 23/02/2020 10:42

Is a teacher allowed to put photos of children on to social media?

Imnobody4 · 23/02/2020 10:59

I hope that's peaked a few more into completing the consultation.
Mhairi Black is an idiot.

RunSkipJump · 23/02/2020 10:59

I thought most schools have social media accounts - and put photos of kids on there (with parental permission - usually given at the beginning of the school year) but they don't include names.

rogdmum · 23/02/2020 11:00

Oh that’s a good question, Dido and I really shouldn’t have put the photo here! I’ll ask MNHQ if they can delete the photo.

Eww, so they chose a drag queen with a period joke for the name. That'll be lovely for the young girls trying to cope with their first period.

RunSkipJump · 23/02/2020 11:13

OP - perhaps you could just edit the photo to put dots over the children's faces. Then get MNHQ to replace it - or you could repost it.

DidoLamenting · 23/02/2020 11:13

I wasn't getting at you btw. The photo is clearly in the public domain although the account is now blocked.

Mhairi Black is an idiot Never liked her. Swearing a lot isn't actually a talent or interesting.

An aside, she and her parents don't know how her name should be pronounced. That spelling is Gaelic and should be pronounced "Varee". It isn't just a different way of spelling "Marie".

Deliriumoftheendless · 23/02/2020 11:14

There’s no issue with a teacher telling primary kids they are gay- just as it’s fine for a hereto school worker to discussing being in a hereto relationship or having kids.

CallofDoodee · 23/02/2020 11:19

Why drag queens though? I thought gay people had fought for years to have their sexuality recognised as just like everyone else's - that it's not a kink, it doesn't require a costume, it's not pretending to be something else, it's just that they happen to be attracted to the same sex as themselves.

The vast, vast majority of homosexual people look like normal everyday people, have normal everyday jobs and fairly mundane lives, just like the majority of heterosexual people. This idea that all gay men love to wear make up, and act like bitchy women is such a damaging stereotype, why perpetuate it.

Why couldn't Mhairi Black, a lesbian woman who has become very successful in her own right, have done this on her own? What a great role model that would be.

As an aside, the girl standing on the left (as we look at it) of the drag queen in that first photo looks so uncomfortable.

CallofDoodee · 23/02/2020 11:23

What is that drag queens actual name? Is it just 'Flow' I wonder? If it is a name that is supposed to be a play on periods then.... WTF?!

LastTrainEast · 23/02/2020 11:24

Deliriumoftheendless Nothing wrong if the subject comes up, but when I was in primary school none of my teachers told me anything about their sex life. Though we all knew about the P.E. Teacher of course.

NotAGirl · 23/02/2020 11:31

The misogyny of drag just keeps coming through, female biological functions are just a prop for a cheap laugh Hmm

Thingybob · 23/02/2020 11:39

The HT's Twitter account has now been locked

It was just unlocked long enough for a tweet to appear complaining about the bullying and abuse they have received.

A quick read through showed how much time has been invested in LGBT education. Over the last couple of weeks, the Headteacher came out to the school and explained their same sex relationship, a gay wrestler visited the school to discuss his experience, a uni LBGT group delivered a workshop, as well as the visits from the drag queen and Mhari Black.

Then there's the bunting and rainbow squad

At Glencoats Primary in Renfrewshire, pupil leaders can become part of the Rainbow Squad, helping to implement the school’s LGBT Charter

FGS, this is a primary school

Deliriumoftheendless · 23/02/2020 11:39

I’m sorry I don’t want to derail but you can talk about your relationships without referring to sex. So a lesbian who works in a school may discuss getting married to her female partner or say yes I am gay that means I go out with women. Just as het staff may say “my husband/wife/gf/bf”.

Sorry again for derail.

rogdmum · 23/02/2020 11:41

Thanks Dido I know you weren’t aiming it at me but it did make me think about what I’d done and although the photos are in the public domain already, in hindsight, I’m not comfortable sharing them further, MNHQ have deleted the image for me. Smile
