FFS! Why did a she have to do this? It’s so divisive and gratuitously mean!

If you think calling someone thick as feck Or a thick feck is eloquent, I'm not sure you know what eloquent means.

@SapphosRock

"Don't worry there's been plenty of posts on this thread excusing, minimising and denying Posie said trans men should be sterilised."

Well I did none of those things so there was really no need to say all that but thanks for caring.

"And of course she retracted it (after repeating it multiple times on various different social media platforms) which makes it okay..."

I don't think she repeated it multiple times on various different social media platforms but, in any event, she retracted it after thinking it through, which does make it OK, AFAIC. People should be allowed to change their minds, IMO, and not have their intemperate remarks held against them for the rest of their lives.

"What makes you agree with this?"

Well, firstly, because I believe it is unethical to pretend to be something you are not and, secondly, because those who do so - including every trans 'man' I've ever seen, tend to normalise harmful and regressive gender stereotypes that we should be working to abolish. I don't see how a woman who claims to be a man can be a good example to a child.

"And how on earth can you justify it seeing as being transgender is a protected characteristic along with religion, disability, sexuality etc?"

See above. I justify my opinion according to ethical principles - I don't have to justify it legally.

Creepster · 20/01/2020 21:57

Transgender is not a protected characteristic in law. It is unethical to repeat this untruth.

I thought dysphoria was classed as a 'condition' rather than a 'problem'

So a condition is not a problem? I know most about dysphoria from what detransitioners tell us about it and it sounds awfully like a mental health problem to me.

I think TRAs must associate mental health problems with madness and that is why they lobbied to have it renamed a condition.

DuMondeB · 21/01/2020 04:16

‘Gender dysphoria’ is classified as a mental disorder in the DSM 5

‘Gender incongruence’ (the replacement term for what was previously known as ‘transsexualism’) is classified as a “Condition related to sexual health” in the ICD-11 (along with a heap of paraphilias - see screenshot).

ICD is used for billing codes for medical insurance in the USA, so completely removing gendersomethingorother is presumably not desirable because it will mean no obligation to provide cross sex hormones or surgery?

In the UK gender clinics (NHS and private) are currently staffed by psychologists/psychiatrists who make a diagnosis of Gender Dysphoria. I suppose a US style ‘informed consent’ system would do away with the need for a diagnosis via a psych professional? I can’t see the NHS moving towards this though, especially not with all the weirdness going on with a massive rise in referrals, particularly from young female people and the risk of future lawsuits.

A ‘you can’t sue us’ get out clause is surely incompatible with a national health programme?

It's entirely possible to have common ground with a person, yet also think they're a 'thick feck' as Julie so eloquently proved.

Julie "proved" this in eloquent fashion... by typing it into Twitter?

Christ on a bike. I like Julie. A lot. But getting an arse on after a few bevies and typing insults into the Twatter is not eloquently proving much! Especially when you don't even get the name of the person you think you're sticking up for right. You make yourself look a bit of a tit!

(Sorry Julie!)
