M&S + John Lewis - your poor Christmas sales will be due to the contempt you've shown your female customers

It's all over the news that M&S and John Lewis have had terrible Christmas sales. I am absolutely sure this is due to the terrible press coverage they received and viral threads of Twitter about how they allow men into the female changing rooms, the contempt they treated their female customers with when we voiced our complaints, and the 1,000s of us who pledged not to shop with them over Christmas. I stuck by my pledge over Christmas and they lost about £1,000 of custom from me with gifts and food. Anyone else kept up their boycott?

The ick factor is just too strong now.

DuMondeB · 16/01/2020 13:00

And finally, no more thumbs-ups or downs. Why do M&S need them? What is that about, even? Get rid.

I suspect this is a cost saving, artificial intelligence type thing. Lots of thumbs down will either automatically delete the review or flag it up to an actual human being to review.

Maybe if we collectively started to thumbs down all the reviews that explicitly say ‘as a man’ ‘fits a male’ etc action would be taken? I reckon it would only take 40-50 thumbs down make a particular review flag up.

Tubbytwo · 16/01/2020 13:03

DuMondeB, I’ve already made this my mission but the more of us who do it the better!

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 16/01/2020 13:35

I can tell you that some "laydee reviews" I have posted on a similar (but not sick-making) way have been downvoted quote a lot.

borntobequiet · 16/01/2020 19:08

They need a Per Unum range but I expect that would be misgendering in some way.
But! Having looked, surely Per Una should be Per Unam, as per seemingly takes the accusative? Or is it really named for someone called Una, except that’s an anglicised Irish name?

SingingLily · 16/01/2020 22:37

It's Italian, so it would be Per Uno.

It wouldn't appeal though, for all sorts of reasons...

borntobequiet · 16/01/2020 22:52

Oh, silly me. Well at least I revisited Latin for about the second time in 45 years.
Slightly puzzled now why the range was given an Italian name in the first place. Or perhaps all those unnecessary frills and buttons are an Italian thing?
I should really go to bed.

Evenquieterlife33 · 16/01/2020 23:40

I was thinking exactly this O.P. Women just quietly voting with our feet. I normally pop in at Christmas to get decorations ( I’m a bit obsessed.) and I like to update each year but I went to an alternative retailer who wants my money. I have not bought a thing in John Lewis since. Not one thing. I’ve also stopped using a few other stores where I feel uncomfortable changing. We have options and we are using them.

Uncompromisingwoman · 20/01/2020 20:38

Noticed this today. This predator has been banned from entering or loitering outside any female-only facilities and must declare any membership of spas or leisure facilities to police using his real name" once he is released from prison .
www.lancashiretelegraph.co.uk/news/18169169.pervert-filmed-naked-women-darwen-leisure-centre-trafford-centre---children-changing-rooms/

Yet he will be completely free to use M & S's lingerie and other mixed sex changing rooms because any man who is more comfortable using them is free to do so. Hmm

Tubbytwo · 20/01/2020 20:47

Please send your observations to M&S. I’ve written to them but received no answer. Quel surprise 🤬 I’d like M&S management to be inundated with valid complaints about their policies that endanger women and girls. If enough of us protest maybe they’ll get it into their thick skulls. Otherwise how many women and girls will perverts need to be film or attack before common effing sense prevails?

Uncompromisingwoman · 20/01/2020 20:53

I think most of us on this thread Tubbytwo have written, cancelled our accounts and are generally boycotting them. We've all had dismissive emails back so they are presumably far more concerned about Stonewall etc than they are about the safety and feelings of their women customers.

Tubbytwo · 20/01/2020 21:01

I guessed most of you had probably already written too and I'm sorry that you've all had the same response. They've not even had the courtesy to reply to me with their woke weasel words. I shall patiently keep down voting the AGP knicker reviews even though I feel grubby after reading them.

It's pathetic isn't it? That's all the 'power' we have in the face of intolerable danger to at least half the population :(

OhHolyJesus · 20/01/2020 21:20

How about an open letter Liston four concerns and respectively asking for answers - signed The Women Wink

GirlDownUnder · 21/01/2020 02:41

- signed The Women

Might need to add the definition of 'woman' just to help them out 🤷‍♀️

HandsOffMyRights · 21/01/2020 08:48

Great, M&S drafts in Topshop boss to head up womenswear.

Topshop also encourages men to change with girls
Waiting for womeswear to change its name to peopleswear

HandsOffMyRights · 21/01/2020 08:49

womenswear
I didn't purposely miss out a letter (or replace one with an X Angry)

Tubbytwo · 21/01/2020 09:12

I think you have the makings of a good rallying cry ' HandsOffMyRights, I won't buy your tights"! Sorry, I am happy to find any crumb of humour I can in these days of totalitarian rule :(

Mayomaynot · 22/01/2020 11:10

I didn't buy anything from M&S this Christmas. I haven't bought anything from them since the boycott was in place and I am someone who used to buy lots from there. I wrote to them and received a very patronising reply. They have spoken and so I shall listen and respond accordingly.

LangClegsOpinionIsNoted · 22/01/2020 13:28

. They have spoken and so I shall listen and respond accordingly.

Very well put.

SingingLANGly · 22/01/2020 13:36

And I'm still boycotting...

LangClegsOpinionIsNoted · 22/01/2020 13:54

Oh yes, me too, SingingLANGly.

Ninkanink · 22/01/2020 14:15

Think about it - a thousand women, each not spending let’s say a thousand pounds with M&S/JL over Nov-Dec, that is an awful lot of revenue lost. I dare say there are many more than that boycotting (myself included), and likely some of those would ordinarily have spent far more than ‘just’ a thousand over the past three months. Plus, the two or three women, at a conservative estimate, that each of those women have spoken to and who may well have joined the boycott.

This is hurting them where it counts. However that is not the reason for my boycott - I simply refuse to spend with a company that treats me and other women with contempt. I shall continue to boycott until they come to their senses.

Mayomaynot · 22/01/2020 15:47

Thanks LangClegsOpinionIsNoted

If a shop doesn't care about the safety of women then they can't really complain if women stop shopping there. It's not like we haven't told them why.

BlackeyedSusan · 22/01/2020 17:24

I would have normally used m and s for food at the hospital. Not this time. Ok not a lot of cash but the little bits add up.

EmpressLangClegInChair · 22/01/2020 17:24

I’ve stopped. It’s annoying because I’ve recently taken up crochet & love the JL haberdashery but I’ll find an independent or buy online.
