The war on women continues:

The poor, poor woman. Facing a year in jail for being gang-raped.

I think she was telling the truth.

The arrogance of the judge ignoring psychological reports from the UK

BlackboardMonitorVimes · 30/12/2019 10:20

I believe her.

Let's hope she gets to come home as soon as possible and start recovering from this.

Helini · 30/12/2019 10:21

This is horrific. That poor woman. We believe you. We're so sorry this happened to you. It's not fair.

Whatisthisfuckery · 30/12/2019 10:26

It’s beyond awful, that poor woman. I believe her. Why aren’t the foreign office all over this?

OhHolyJesus · 30/12/2019 10:26

With this it's hard to see reasons why someone would report a rape. I know the reasons, but with this treatment and consequence it's no wonder rapes don't get reported. Poor woman, I hope she gets justice somehow one day. I believe her.

Toomboom · 30/12/2019 10:27

I have always believed her. Poor woman.

SarahTancredi · 30/12/2019 10:29

Who wouldnt retract their statement whilst having no proper legal representation, in an strange place, draining your family's money every night you stay there all whilst knowing 1 percent or something stupid of cases ever result in a conviction. Think I'd say forget it and go home too.

I believe her.

SidJS · 30/12/2019 10:30

She went to have consensual sex with one. Do we think all the others ensured they individually obtained consent from her ?? Me thinks not...

Apparently not a ‘reliable witness’... same old crap... you’re composed - you’re not reliable. Your distraught - you’re not reliable. You can’t remember every single detail - you’re not reliable. You remember too much - you’re not reliable.

Not reliable when interrogated by the police for ages with a lawyer ...

The men however - always reliable...

The arrogance of the judge ignoring psychological reports from the UK

Bit of a post-colonial chip on the shoulder there, and a conservative Greek Orthodox culture that despises Aya Napa and all its works but takes the cash just the same.

SidJS · 30/12/2019 10:56

My above post should read without a lawyer

OldCrone · 30/12/2019 10:57

The police put pressure on her to retract her statement.

franke · 30/12/2019 11:00

I read earlier in the trial that some text messages from the men's phones had been recovered which implied she'd been telling the truth. Haven't seen them mentioned again. I wonder why.

This poor woman. I hope she can come home now.

SuperficialSuzie · 30/12/2019 11:01

Just horrific.

I believe her.

converseandjeans · 30/12/2019 11:03

I believe her.

AlexaShutUp · 30/12/2019 11:04

This is just awful. I believe her too.

That poor, poor woman.

Thesuzle · 30/12/2019 11:06

Well that’s Cyprus my holiday list forever.
Is there a crowd funding page to get her home ? Pay some bills ?

Thesuzle · 30/12/2019 11:06

Off my holiday list

MetalMidget · 30/12/2019 11:09

It's horrifying. The judge refused to hear evidence that she'd been raped, saying that it wasn't a rape case they were hearing.

CrissmussMockers · 30/12/2019 12:28

This 'judge' sounds like a very underqualified magistrate.

fridgegrazer · 30/12/2019 12:36

I was astonished that in Cyprus nothing is recorded in police stations - so the evidence can't be examined at all. Also that none of the "falsely" accused men were called as witnesses and that the judge refused to hear any evidence pertaining to the rape as the whole context of the offence was that there was no rape - hardly unbiased judgement was it?

Agree with pp - how does going home with one man automatically mean agreement to have intercourse with eleven men? What sort of person (man) thinks this is OK?

I am absolutely appalled, the poor young woman and her family.

BigusBumus · 30/12/2019 12:39

But how does any KNOW she was either lying or not lying, unless you were one of the 13 people present?

Its all very well saying I believe her, (and for whats its worth I am very much leaning that way), but what if she IS lying? Its happened before. I just can't be 100% behind someone for the only fact that shes a woman. She is a human being and so are the boys. It could be that she IS lying? Or they are. My default position is always to be on the side of the woman, but there is something about this case that makes me very uneasy.

Fraggling · 30/12/2019 12:41

I believe her and have from the start.

They are trying to protect their tourist industry.

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 30/12/2019 12:44

Who the fuck knows Bigus, obviously no one knows for sure except those who were there, but the fact that 3 mens semen was found on her is very telling. Do we really think she willingly slept with 3 of her boyfriends pals? Its possible but v unlikely IMO.

Briton found guilty over Ayia Napa false rape claim
www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2019/dec/30/briton-found-guilty-over-ayia-napa-false-claim-cyprus

The woman retracted the assertion less than a month after making the claim, in a poorly written confession that her lawyers have since argued she was coerced into signing by Cypriot police. The men were released and have since returned to Israel.

Turning from victim to suspect overnight, the woman was arrested on charges of giving a false statement “over an imaginary offence”.
[...]
Michael Polak, a lawyer from the Justice Abroad group, which is assisting the woman, said: “We are not surprised by the result given the frequent refusal during the trial of the judge to consider evidence which supported the fact that the teenager had been raped.

“Shutting down questioning from our Cypriot advocates and the production of evidence into the trial on a handful of occasions the judge stridently stated ‘this is not a rape case, I will not consider whether she was raped or not’.

“We have found it incredibly difficult to follow this logic given that an essential element of the offence is for there to be a ‘false statement concerning an imaginary offence’ and therefore, clearly if the teenager was raped, she cannot be guilty.
