The war on women continues:

The poor, poor woman. Facing a year in jail for being gang-raped.

A presidential pardon in lieu of serving a prison sentence if one is imposed meets the most pressing issue, which is to get a suffering woman home. But it's not justice and the UK should not allow the pressure to drop in getting the conviction appealed/quashed.

On another note, according to the Guardian, easyJet, LastMinute.com and Expedia are still advertising the hotel concerned. Perhaps we should get emailing complaints?

It was Sam who gave the names to police of the others said to be involved. Among those he said was present was 18-year-old Yona Golub. He [Golub] was able to prove his innocence by producing a 'selfie' he had taken with his girlfriend while the alleged rape took place at the Napa Pambos Rocks hotel in Ayia Napa last July. Golub, from town of Afula, near Nazareth, said he still intends to sue the British teen for compensation and said he wanted to see the woman jailed.

Erm, Golub, it was your mate Sam who named you wrongly, you should be suing him. Or, better still, your name's clear, no one's blaming you so drop it, because the optics on chasing the lass for cash really don't look good for you.

Oh, of course, first rule of misogyny: women are responsible for what men do. In this case, a gang rape victim is responsible for a perpetrator's inaccurate police statement.

FrogsFrogs · 06/01/2020 19:58

Pardon means she's still done something wrong and the men will never be tried.

Good she gets to come home but really wtf are Cyprus playing at. Shout loud enough and the legal system goes your way?

AnneShirleyBlythe · 07/01/2020 07:30

Just watching the sentencing on bbc news. She got 4 months suspended for 4 yrs. Loads of protestors outside court. They are waiting for the woman and family to come out. Her lawyer is expected to make a statement.

AnneShirleyBlythe · 07/01/2020 07:31

Sorry that should be 3 yrs not 4!

AnneShirleyBlythe · 07/01/2020 07:37

Many of the protestors are Israeli women. One just spoke on camera and said no way would she be convicted in Israel for retracting her statement.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 07/01/2020 07:49

The men will never be tried in any case because they were allowed to go home. Israel wouldn't have sent them back.

Is there a link to the just giving/crowdfunded? Thanks

If they truly believed she was falsely accusing 12 men of rape, including underage boys, surely she'd get more than four months. They just look even more deceitful.

HandsOffMyRights · 07/01/2020 08:26

Sorry to cite The Guardian:

“I have decided to give her a second chance,” the judge, Michalis Papathanasiou, told the packed courtroom, citing her age, psychological state and dependency on anti-depressants.

The woman hugged her family and legal team and left court weeping, with her head in her hands, after she was sentenced for public mischief.*

This is so loaded from the judge, it makes my skin crawl.
Even now, she is still being treated diabolically and that she's lucky.

FrauleinF · 07/01/2020 08:28

I wonder what hope there is that the conviction will be quashed? Or even that there will be some kind of judicial review of police procedures in Cyprus?

The "grand gesture" of a pardon does not negate the atrocious handling of the entire process and the manifold negative effects on the victim - but is also probably Cyprus' best chance of "brushing the whole thing under the carpet". I'll bet the government wants to "move on" as soon as they can.

I'm glad she gets to come home, but in the long term, what is there for her to look forward to? Am I right that her identity has already been leaked on social media? Also, her chances of getting the (choice of) career a potential university graduate wants are basically zero with a criminal record.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 07/01/2020 09:03

'This is so loaded from the judge, it makes my skin crawl.'

It made me furious. Where does he get off? How fucking dare he?

SapatSea · 07/01/2020 09:20

It made me furious too. I do hope so much that the conviction gets quashed. The judge has form for throwing out rape cases.

Glad Dominic Raab stepped up and told the Cypriot Government that the UK was "considering" the advice to give UK women about visiting Cyprus. (never thought I'd say that about a Tory) Money talks as always.

RoyalCorgi · 07/01/2020 09:55

Yes. What an utterly vile and loathsome man. If you ever wanted evidence of how much misogyny there is in the judicial system, there it is right there. Giving the woman a second chance = making sure that if she ever has the audacity to be raped again, she won't make the mistake of trying to report it.

God almighty, what is this? Some kind of vendetta by the government and legal systems of Cyprus and Israel (which is harbouring the suspects) against a teenaged rape victim?

And now some other thug is trying to get money from her. "Yona Golub [wrongly named as a suspect by one of the gang] said he still intends to sue the British teen for compensation and said he wanted to see the woman jailed."

As bd67th says, "first rule of misogyny: women are responsible for what men do."

alreadytaken · 07/01/2020 11:02

I have visited Cyprus - I liked it and especially the people. It's a good winter sun destination. But I've donated to the fundraiser and joined in on twitter with the #BoycottCyprus campaign. I urge anyone on twitter to tweet with that hashtag so that it trends on twitter.

BovaryX · 07/01/2020 11:29

This case reflects extremely badly on Cyprus. I read that the girl will have to abandon her original degree choice because of this conviction. Hopefully her lawyers can successfully appeal to get it overturned. This entire case is just disgraceful and her ordeal horrendous

Mandarinfish · 07/01/2020 12:06

This case has made me personally rule out future travel to Cyprus. The treatment of this young woman has been horrendous.

AryaStarkWolf · 07/01/2020 12:15

They are trying to protect their tourist industry.

I hope that how they handled it has done the complete opposite of that.

ArranUpsideDown · 07/01/2020 14:08

I would object and refuse to attend a professional meeting/conference in Cyprus. If it's named as a venue then I shall protest to the organisers.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 07/01/2020 14:21

I'm aware of how melodramatic this sounds but when I think of what that poor girl has been through, has still to go through and how this appalling miscarriage of justice has changed her life, I could very easily cry. Unfortunately whilst we are hearing of more cases like this these days, something about thus case has really got under my skin. I'm actively avoiding the conversation with people I know to often to rape apologists/inner misogynists as I know I'm close to losing my shit I'm so angry. Maybe it's because the vitriol she's getting is goes beyond UK? I don't know. This could be any of our daughters one day. Sad

I wish there was more we could do (on top of crowdfund, Twitter and putting two fingers up at Cyprus for hols in future) to show solidarity for her.

AryaStarkWolf · 07/01/2020 14:50

It seems like most men(and some women bizarrely) want to be believe that women are liars or deep down "wanted it" no means yes etc

TheQueef · 07/01/2020 15:13

People trying to normalise 12 men as a casual decision are fucking me right off.
It's revea

Feminazgul · 07/01/2020 15:58

TheQueef it's depressingly commen when talking about violence towards, and the murder of women.
