British woman found guilty of making up rape claims

The war on women continues:

www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2019/dec/30/briton-found-guilty-over-ayia-napa-false-claim-cyprus

The poor, poor woman. Facing a year in jail for being gang-raped.

Tell you what, put the men through the same treatment - see what they 'confess' to after that kind of 'interview'

And that'll be without having been raped the night before of course, so not even close to the same level of distress for them, because I absolutely believe her.

ACouchOfOnesOwn · 30/12/2019 12:51

Why aren’t the foreign office all over this?
That's what I don't understand either. There's lots of outrage across social media. Where the hell is the government on this?

I believe her. It would be good if it provoked a campaign to boycott Cyprus. Although iirc Cyprus rely more on Israeli tourism than UK which probably impacted how they approached this entire case.

Discombobulated47 · 30/12/2019 12:51

Horrific. I believe her too.

TreestumpsAndTrampolines · 30/12/2019 12:52

How is it that the burden of proof is on her to prove she's been raped, in the rape charge, and then again, to prove she's been raped (but without talking about it apparently) in the second trial.

Shouldn't the assumption of the second be that there was a rape, and that she was lying has to be proved? Surely you have to prove the assertion, not defend yourself against the assumption you're guilty?

PerkingFaintly · 30/12/2019 12:53

So the answer to BigusBumus's question is that, regardless of who was telling the truth, the woman or the men who had sex with her, it's extremely hard to argue that there has been a fair trial.

The men weren't tried at all and their evidence was never tested.

The woman was tried for lying about "an imaginary offence". The judge refused to admit evidence about whether it was "an imaginary offence".

ktjb39 · 30/12/2019 12:56

Just awful - I believe her

VivaLeBeaver · 30/12/2019 12:57

Terrible. I believe her. How traumatic for her. Raped, not believed and then facing a trial and possibly jail. It’s a disgrace.

Does Cyprus have a hold over the U.K. due to raf/army bases there? Or is it simply a case of the U.K. not getting involved in the judicial system of another country?

happydappy2 · 30/12/2019 13:00

This case is awful. I don't believe she willingly had sex with all those men. Where is the video footage that some of the guys filmed? If it was consensual sex then lets prove it, but the onus should be on the men to prove it.
I think when the family appeal the case will have to be re heard.

OxfordCat · 30/12/2019 13:17

This is so appalling. The poor poor woman. Disgusting system and judge. I've never been to Cyprus but I'm definitely never going now. Sickening.

I wish there was more we could do? Is there?

Aaarrgghhh · 30/12/2019 13:22

From what I’ve read from this thread, the judge sounds like an idiot. It’s a rape case but he won’t consider rape at all? Wtf?

BigusBumus · 30/12/2019 14:06

Just heard a long article about it in Radio 4 which explained a lot to me I was ignorant about. Poor girl. Sad

NeurotrashWarrior · 30/12/2019 14:12

Another long account, utterly sickening.

I believe her.

TheNameGames · 30/12/2019 14:18

I believe her too.

Uncompromisingwoman · 30/12/2019 14:23

Eleven men versus one young woman - they go home unchallenged and she ends up on trial. Sad
I know that her crowd funder has been well supported and quite right to.

Mintjulia · 30/12/2019 14:25

We need a campaign to shun Cyprus as a destination.

I wouldn’t go there or a number of other countries because they simply aren’t safe for women.

FrauleinF · 30/12/2019 14:59

Sickening. I believe her.

As an aside, I was nearly gang raped by a bunch of Israelis myself in not dissimilar circumstances whilst backpacking 15 years ago. Had I ended up in her shoes i probably wouldn't have even bothered reporting, so fucked up is seemingly every legal system in the world.

Disgusting that the men weren't even called as witnesses. Surely a fair trial involves questioning more than one party who was there at the time?

According to the Telegraph article linked to above, the 12 men - rather than being at all contrite, fading into the background and having a good hard think about how consent should be enthusiastically given (and also how an orgy of 12 men and 1 woman who has allegedly been pinned down is perhaps never a good idea) - popped champagne and chanted "the Brit is a whore" as soon as they touched down at Ben Gurion airport. Tells me all I need to know.

SorryAuntLydia · 30/12/2019 15:00

I believe her

MoonlightBonnet · 30/12/2019 15:04

I believe her too

nevermorelenore · 30/12/2019 15:19

Where is the video footage that some of the guys filmed?

Apparently some of it has been leaked to porn sites, which is utterly disgusting. Trouble is, it'll only show part of the ordeal and could be edited to make it seem like she was a willing participant.

Summerandsparkle · 30/12/2019 15:27

If there is a crowd funding page I would donate.

She is British, why on earth is she in prison and why are we not helping her.

CrissmussMockers · 30/12/2019 15:31

The parents insist they are all "Good Boys" who might murder someone, and admit it, but would never rape anyone.

The trip looks like a pre-national service last binge of freedom for the 18 y/o's in the group before the hardships of military training.

Families sound like conservative orthodox but not hassidic, bedrock Likud support so this is very political in Israel where the govt. would do anything to get its citizens out of harm's way.

FCO culture sees Brits abroad in trouble as a bloody nuisance. They are there to lick arse and sell missiles.

SugarPlumFairyCakes · 30/12/2019 16:07

I believe her
Will never go to Cyprus again.
That poor girl.

theflushedzebra · 30/12/2019 21:20

Just appalling. I now consider Cyprus, among many other countries sadly, unsafe for women.

"Don't ever ask why women don't report rape again."

Quite.

I believe her.

Is there a crowd funder? I realise MN won't let us link directly to it, but I shall google it if people can give a few hints as to where to find it.

ThePurported · 30/12/2019 22:14

I found it via Julie Bindel on Twitter.
