Upfield (manufacturers of Flora marg, and Proactiv) don't want Mumsnet to buy their products any more

They've made the decision to 'no longer work with Mumsnet' because they want to 'treat everyone equally' because of their 'values'.

By this I'm sure they mean any woman who uses this site should definitely NOT buy their products. That would be an unpleasant association between mumsnet and their values that would be too much to bear.

Here is a helpful list of their products that they don't want in any way associated with Mumsnet:

Country rock
Flora
Rama
BlueBand
Lätta
Flora Proactiv
Becel
I can't believe it's not butter

Please don't sully their brands with any association from you, you horrid mumsnetters. Your money is tainted with unacceptable values.

and yes to MN being an education

so many women here talking honestly about the reality and the minutiae of their lives (and yes I know a sizeable chunk isn't genuine).

and while the prevailing views on MN often seem to include a lot of nonsense about toilet brushes and how often you change your sheets, it's also breezily pro women, has a shrewd understanding of safeguarding and is thoroughly anti exploitation. Not something big businesses like particularly

for those who haven't come across this glorious example of mumsnet's prevailing views in action, may I recommend it? you may wish to ensure you've done your pelvic floor exercises this morning before reading:

That thread makes me wish the thigh women would join us here more often. Everywhere, in fact!

DancelikeEmmaGoldman · 14/10/2019 09:03

I think there’s an element of childish, narcissistic rage in the repeated attacks on MN, because the majority of MNers are mothers.

It feels like thwarted children at the moment they realise their mother is a separate human being, who is not absolutely focused on their wants, needs and desires.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 14/10/2019 09:07

It makes me wonder how many adults are stuck at that mental stage, honestly.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 14/10/2019 09:09

Scared of old ladies maybe...

BernardBlacksWineIceLolly · 14/10/2019 09:24

yes, we had a rash of new posters who were shocked at mothers behaving this way, back when the GRA consultation was running

heady days

Brassik · 14/10/2019 09:32

How badly will this effect Flora?
Gillette discovered that brand loyalty evaporated when they started attacking men. One youtube advert and they had to write off $8 billion in goodwill. Flora is just like Gillette, one brand amongst many on the shelf. The only difference is the agreeableness of women compared to men. I'm sure they will make a big loss, but probably not billions.

^Lang I don't think you answered the most important question of the day Are you new to MN ? Surely that's enough to get this thread into Classics*

I'm so unobtrusive that I creep under the radar!

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 14/10/2019 10:04

Positive shrinking violet you are!

Mordred · 14/10/2019 11:15

Butter only in our gaff. Also, lard and beef fat for frying.

Flora is plastic mush in a tub. Disgusting.

littlbrowndog · 14/10/2019 11:24

Lang who ?

Must be new

ShesDressedInBlackAgain · 14/10/2019 11:48

Welcome to mumsnet Lang.

BernardBlacksWineIceLolly · 14/10/2019 11:49

It’s really nice to see newbies unlurking, isn’t it?

Be brave Lang, keep posting. We all want to hear what you have to say. Don’t be intimidated

It was the gasps and cries of transphobia that brought me to the FWR boards a few years ago. I was worried and horrifed, because I hated to think that there was a section of this great community on mumsnet, who could be so openly hateful to people who were just trying to live their own lives in their own way and who don’t affect my life by doing so. So I looked, and I looked and I couldn’t find this transphobia at all, what I found, was an intelligent respectful debate, involving and including Women and Transwomen/TransMen/Lesbians/Gay men etc... discussing the pitfalls of the proposed changes to self identification and the very serious detrimental effect that these secretive proposals could have on the lives of women and girls. I learned about the GRA, Radical Feminism, the equality act, the Cotton Ceiling, Lady Dick (Confused), the perjorative use of the word TERF, the diminutive use of CIS, Women’s refuges, dangerous Puberty Blocker use on children, no platforming, breast binding, Autogynophilia, companies/organsitions etc... who now seem to think the word ‘Woman’ is a dirty word and so on. (I could go in all day about what I have learned there but you get my drift.)

I lurk mostly, as I always worry that I cannot add anything as constructive and eloquent as those already contributing to the boards, but I read very regularly and am eternally grateful for the work that these brave Women, men and Transpeople, are doing to protect my rights, and those of all of the women and girls in the UK, whether they realise they need these protections yet or not.

If Flora (Upfield) had done any research at all, they would have seen what I have seen, and realised that by their actions, are not only destroying brand confidence in their products, but placing themselves very firmly on the wrong side of history.

Fuck you Upfield, if you don’t care for my rights, I don’t care for your products. There are many more lurkers like me, who will see this as a massive fuck you to Women and girls across the UK just as I do.

Thank you Mumsnet, for allowing this debate to rage on, I understand how difficult it must be, but it’s so important to continue nevertheless. It wouldn’t surprise me to find that this actually brings these issues more into the mainstream and once people check the FWR boards out properly, like I did, they will find that it’s not a “hotbed of transphobia” at all Hmm but actually a very wise and sensible debate, that absolutely must be had.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 14/10/2019 11:56

Takes me a while to remember names. Long Clog, will try to register that one.

I hadn't really thought about how much better for the environment it would be if we all stopped buying spreads in plastic tubs and stuck to butter. I do wash and recycle the plastic tubs (Pure, not Flora) but better not to buy them in the first place.

In The Spectator

blogs.spectator.co.uk/2019/10/mumsnet-flora-and-the-spread-of-the-corporate-culture-wars/

There is something endearingly British about Mumsnet’s bloodymindedness. A website that, in theory, should be about the extortionate cost of childcare and moaning that Dear Husband forgot to take the bins out again has somehow found itself in the vanguard of the radical feminist movement. That quirk has now cost the site a partnership with Flora, which severed ties over what activists called ‘trans-hostile posts’ on Mumsnet’s forums. A margarine substitute producer might not be the kind of firm you’d expect to have strong political views but women discussing their sex-based rights on the internet seems to scrape their toast the wrong way. I can’t believe it’s not misogyny.

I particularly liked his description of the product in question as spreadable plant emulsion .....SPEM. H'mm, I wonder if that'll catch on.

Spem, spem spem, spem.. Might make a good song....

RoyalCorgi · 14/10/2019 12:28

Someone on Twitter said that the outrage over mothers expressing opinions reminded them of the great Harry Enfield "Women, know your limits" sketch:

Manderleyagain · 14/10/2019 12:53

I have just sent them a message to say I won't be buying their product, and the web site flashes up a statement, which doesn't mention mumsnet, but is obvs about this. Saying we support mums, but we think more can be done in moderating to prevent discriminatory posts.

Sorry if this is already noted. I haven't read all 31 pages!

MrsWednesdayteatime · 14/10/2019 13:03

(my post vanished, sorry if it duplicates)

In summary, I've binned my half tub of spreadable plant emulsion aka Flora buttery and bought some President Spreadable instead

Notthebloodymustardcushion · 14/10/2019 13:04

God, that Harry Enfield sketch, I had forgotten about “Women, Know your limits”. How incredibly apt.

NeurotrashWarrior · 14/10/2019 13:10

Just enjoying a nice bagel with butter, yum yum.

are you new?

lottiegarbanzo · 14/10/2019 13:12

Sounds like another knee-jerk PR debacle, as when Girl-Guiding panicked and sent an email to all parents, trying to explain their position in a debate with some ex-guide leaders which, while it had been reported briefly, most people wouldn't have heard about.

Their message, like the one you report, made no sense to anyone not already involved in the discussion and just served to alert people to the fact that there was a discussion and their own idiotic position.

Good luck cleaning up the rest of the internet Upfield!

'Flora: the margarine for well-moderated mums'.
