Upfield (manufacturers of Flora marg, and Proactiv) don't want Mumsnet to buy their products any more

They've made the decision to 'no longer work with Mumsnet' because they want to 'treat everyone equally' because of their 'values'.

By this I'm sure they mean any woman who uses this site should definitely NOT buy their products. That would be an unpleasant association between mumsnet and their values that would be too much to bear.

Here is a helpful list of their products that they don't want in any way associated with Mumsnet:

Country rock
Flora
Rama
BlueBand
Lätta
Flora Proactiv
Becel
I can't believe it's not butter

Please don't sully their brands with any association from you, you horrid mumsnetters. Your money is tainted with unacceptable values.

The transwidows have provided essential consciousness raising for the rest of us and I am grateful to them for it.

As am I.

Redddc123 · 13/10/2019 23:57

As the person responsible for meal planning, budgeting, and grocery shopping for my family, I'll be sure not to tarnish their reputation with my unsavory money. I usually do buy Country Crock and ICBINB!, but there are plenty of alternatives from other companies who don't feel like they want women to be silenced. Not sure why a margarine company thinks they should police women's speech, but no thanks.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 14/10/2019 00:13

I hope anyone who did the product review and feels strongly about this is asking for their post to be deleted. They don't want your money or your review.

Redshoeblueshoe · 14/10/2019 00:34

Lang I don't think you answered the most important question of the day
Are you new to MN ?
Surely that's enough to get this thread into Classics

ErrolTheDragon · 14/10/2019 00:54

The transwidows have provided essential consciousness raising for the rest of us and I am grateful to them for it.

Heck, yes.

In this particular instance though, I would guess that it's MN's role as a parenting site which is irksome - a place where the safeguarding and wellbeing of children is paramount.

Yes. That's what I think TRAs are worried about, the general public thinking about the fact that if the largest parenting site in the UK has concerns about something they may be worth taking seriously. It's pretty hard to spin worried mums as a dangerous group of radicals that nobody should be listening to, though there have certainly been plenty of people trying.

Flowers, MNHQ. The statements about this have focused attention back on the question of why a parenting site full of predominantly women might have a lot of members taking a particular interest in this issue, and that's something that everyone from MPs to the fresh out of uni people running social media accounts for corporations could do with asking themselves.

Gingerkittykat · 14/10/2019 03:10

I disagree, I think the fact it is a site seen as for mums means it is easy to put it down and take it less seriously.

I've seen comments on newspaper articles saying we should have better things to talk about on a parenting site, calling us breeders and other things. There's a lot of people mocking Mumsnet because they see it as a place for middle aged mums, and who wants to listen to them.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 14/10/2019 03:19

Misogynists exist and comment on articles, but there's a reason TRAs are trying so hard to shut this forum down and it's not because they think nobody is taking us seriously.

Lamahaha · 14/10/2019 05:21

Mothers and grandmothers, mature women not in thrall to the Great Penis, who place the wellbeing of women and girls and the safeguarding of children above earning woke points.
Dangerous to the ideology.

In that context I read on Facebook yesterday that Hillary and Chelsea Clinton have divided opinions on trans issues. Chelsea is all in favour of transwomen being in female spaces and taking part in female sports because "TWAW".

Hillary on the other hand has doubts, but puts them down to being of an older generation and (paraphrased) not yet woke enough. Chelsea shot her some furious looks as she said that, according to the journalist.

Hillary, refusing to listen to her very healthy instinct as a mature woman.
Chelsea, as woke as they get.

Datun · 14/10/2019 07:01

Mothers are boycotting Flora after the margarine’s manufacturer stopped advertising on Mumsnet over complaints of transphobia on the site.

The website’s online discussion board has been a platform for transgender issues, particularly relating to the growing number of children declaring that they want to change sex.

It's so damning. Just the facts tell the entire story.

Rocktheboot · 14/10/2019 07:05

thank you @Justinemumsnet and @mnhq

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 14/10/2019 07:06

Exactly, there no need for hyperbole or amateur dramatics, "site hosts discussion of topical issue, people try to shut that discussion and the site as a whole down" pretty much says it all.

HumberElla · 14/10/2019 07:07

Good. As ever, all we need to see are the facts and the wider public can make up their own minds.

Rocktheboot · 14/10/2019 07:14

when I did my shopping yesterday, I bought butter for the first time in years....YUM! is all I have to say. We are over flora, it's not me, it's you

Datun · 14/10/2019 07:16

One problem is the over use of the word transphobia. It's seriously beginning to have the opposite effect to the one intended.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 14/10/2019 07:20

It's at the point where if someone said "puppies and sunshine are transphobia" a bunch of people on Twitter would be all "oh no! please tell me how so I can avoid these things" and everyone else would just keep rolling their eyes as they have been.

ImGenderfree · 14/10/2019 07:36

I think this is a bit of a PR disaster for Upfield - the below the line comments about trans fats, tasting awful and should attract the plastic tax are not what Upfield wanted.

On a personal note (and hopefully Upfield PR are reading these threads) thank you to all the Mumsnetters suggesting alternatives. I buy butter (love the French ones with salt) and I used to buy Flora for the children’s packed lunches. Now switched to Yeo Valley thanks to the recommendations and it is so much nicer. Thanks mimmymum without you I probably wouldn’t have tried the alternatives.

BernardBlacksWineIceLolly · 14/10/2019 07:44

I like to keep my butter in a butter dish on the kitchen side. it is be spreadable and delicious (and keeps just fine). and I don't have to flavour my sandwiches with chemicals and sadness

ImGenderfree · 14/10/2019 07:52

I need to try that also - again thank you to mimmymum for encouraging me to change my buying habits.

JoyceJeffries · 14/10/2019 07:53

This isn’t going very well for Flora.

RedToothBrush · 14/10/2019 07:54

MN is an education.

MN has equally educated me about the concerns of people with different lives and challenges. Money, relationships, fostering, elderly parents are a few of the many boards which highlight struggles women face in their day to day lives. Some of the courage and generosity is humbling. MN is not a middle class bubble. The opposite. Though many posters may be middle class, open and respectful debate on this site allows us to challenge our own views and assumptions. Even on this thread there will be people from all sorts of backgrounds, living in all sorts of places, and with plenty of different political views. What we have in common is that we care about women. 10 million unique users. That is huge.

This so much.

It's one of the few places on the Internet which actively encourages debate in this way. The number of active users and the female outlook are incredibly important.

Ultimately other issues are more important to women than class, and it's class divisions which are currently fuelling politics and creating polarisation on numerous subjects.

That means MN is one of the few places on the Internet which actively isn't indulging in the culture war in a one sided manner, and because it allows lengthy debate is the very epitome of liberalism (in its true sense) rather than this Liberal identity nonsense (which is extreme liberatarian in reality).

No one else is actively identifying this in a manner that helps to gain traction outside its social bubble.

That means the site is effectively at odds with all the current main political parties.

ImGenderfree · 14/10/2019 07:58

I think this is a great thing to happen - money talks for organisations and so hopefully other companies will think before making knee jerk decisions to appease groups without thinking through the whole issue. The more publicity the better for this.

dianebrewster · 14/10/2019 07:59

Thanks to the posters who reminded me of Flora's old ads! I've started a hashtag #florathemargerineformen on twitter. I doubt it will trend - but you never know. So ironic given their products 🤣🤣🤣

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 14/10/2019 08:01

What was the point of that campaign anyway? It's for men, but women should buy it anyway and...buy something else for themselves? Not enjoy it but he liked it so that's what's important?

Bit of an obvious througline there.
