"Girls are skipping school to avoid sharing gender neutral toilets with boys" - Mail on Sunday article

Great article in the Mail on Sunday today about the awful impacts on girls of being forced to share loos with boys at school. With quotes from a female GP about the health and psychological impacts of girls not having single-sex loos, Stephanie Davies-Arai from Transgender Trend, and David Davies MP

At my university, they had shared toilets, BUT the were all in a corridor and each one had its own toilet, sink and hand dryer, so completely private rooms for each leading off the corridor. I'm sure they were expensive to put in, but it certainly solves all issues in this respect (apart from the fact that students were regularly caught having sex in them, as they were TOO private, but maybe our uni was just uncouth!)

OldCrone · 06/10/2019 11:48

Will you ban girls from using the girls toilets because they are bullying other girls? Taking pictures of them with mobile phones over the cubicle walls? Locking them in the toilet by holding the door shut and not letting them out? Throwing things over the cubicles? Pushing them around and taking their things because they can't be seen by staff?

So your solution to this, Tequila, is to let the boys in so they can do all these things as well?

koshkat · 06/10/2019 11:53

Girls do not behave in this way on the whole. I think that this is a gross exaggeration.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 06/10/2019 11:54

Tequila has now repeatedly implied that we all hate men and trans people and that's why we're concerned about mixed sex toilets so I feel like their arguments may not be entirely in good faith.

Which is odd/interesting in that, well, if Tequila had read the article in the OP then they'd have noticed that the parents whose kids were at the school mentioned are also concerned. Are they evil man hating transphobes too?

truthisarevolutionaryact · 06/10/2019 11:54

I think Tequila's real agenda was shown when they said You want to blame trans gender people and males for every problem in society and this issue gives you the ideal opportunity to do so whilst conveniently ignoring the fact that for so many of us the bullies at school were other girls

Hence their confused and confusing arguments about having mixed sex toilets stops girls bullying girls.

How can that work if someone was born a boy but acts and dresses like a girl. Can you imagine that person trying to use a boy's toilet whilst wearing a skirt/dress?

What does 'acts like a girl' mean? Do you think this boy has changed sex? Why do you think he couldn't use the boys'toilet? Do you think girls want boys in their toilets?

Seriously? Are you joking?

ArnoldWhatshisknickers · 06/10/2019 12:08

Girls bullying girls or boys bullying boys is not the subject of this article.

It is specifically, and only about girls avoiding school and risking their health because they do not want to use mixed sex toilets.

Talk of bullying in single sex facilities, whether due to less common choices of clothing or any other matter, is not relevant.

TequilaPilates · 06/10/2019 12:10

The only unisex/mixed sex toilets that I've heard of in schools are like the ones I'm describing - single occupancy, self contained cubicles opening directly onto a corridor.

I would be shocked if a school simply re designated previously single sex toilets as mixed sex.

If that is what the article is describing then no, I'm not in support of it but is it?

I do think it's blinkered to say that girls don't bulky other girls or that single sex toilets don't lead to toilet avoidance of the risk of utis though because that just isn't true.

0lga · 06/10/2019 12:15

What are schools etc supposed to do when they have to provide for those transitioning etc?

Children can’t transition in the UK.

truthisarevolutionaryact · 06/10/2019 12:15

Tequila, you evidently know little about this as that is precisely what is happening with the redesignation of previously single sex toilets to become mixed sex in schools and everywhere else. And this thread isn't about girls bullying other girls - why not start a separate thread about it as there are many of us with extensive experience of relational aggression and girls bullying other girls? I'd happily contribute.

koshkat · 06/10/2019 12:15

No I am not joking and I have been a teacher for over 20 years so I do have some experience in the matter.

koshkat · 06/10/2019 12:16

I too feel that Tequila is not arguing in good faith here.

Cookieflavoredbiscuit · 06/10/2019 12:17

Thinking back on my schooldays it's all too easy to imagine how awful this must be for so many girls, and also boys. I can remember certain boys I went to school with who would have been delighted with the chance to harass us. Scenes like Untamedtoad's. I just want this to end.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 06/10/2019 12:17

Is there some sort of not reading linked articles religious belief that I was previously unaware of?

TequilaPilates · 06/10/2019 12:17

koshkat

So as a teacher with 20 years experience you are saying that girls don't bulky?

That's utter, utter rubbish.

koshkat · 06/10/2019 12:19

I agree Cookie. I went to a very rough comp as a child and can imagine the glee some of the boys at that school would have taken in terrorising young girls were they to be given such a gold plated opportunity.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 06/10/2019 12:19

I'm sure some girls (are) bulky and some are not. Is your keyboard broken and that's why you can't follow the link and read the article in the OP?

Ereshkigal · 06/10/2019 12:19

Tequila has now repeatedly implied that we all hate men and trans people and that's why we're concerned about mixed sex toilets so I feel like their arguments may not be entirely in good faith.

I feel like we have heard from Tequila before. Or maybe it's just me.

TequilaPilates · 06/10/2019 12:20

truthisarevolutionaryact

If that is what is happening ie single sex toilets in schools are simply being re designated as mixed sex then no, I don't support that.

Ime that isn't what has happened. I am shocked that any school would think it a good idea because it has never been even vaguely hinted at in any discussions that I've been party to.

koshkat · 06/10/2019 12:21

Tequila read what I actually wrote. I said that girls do not behave like this on the whole and that you were guilty of gross exaggeration. That does not equate to 'girls don't bully' now does it?

Ereshkigal · 06/10/2019 12:21

Girls bullying girls or boys bullying boys is not the subject of this article.

This. It's a derail.

The poster didnt say that
