Great article in the Mail on Sunday today about the awful impacts on girls of being forced to share loos with boys at school. With quotes from a female GP about the health and psychological impacts of girls not having single-sex loos, Stephanie Davies-Arai from Transgender Trend, and David Davies MP

Why can your floor to ceiling enclosed cubicles (which should have enclosed sinks by the way) not be single sex?

BernardBlacksWineIceLolly · 06/10/2019 17:59

on the subject of public toilets, I travelled a lot in the UK this summer. My least favourite public lavs were always the completely enclosed, self contained ones tequila advocates

  1. there were long queues (even though the gents had been left intact so men could quickly pop in and use the urinals - bully for them eh?)
  2. I actually felt quite vulnerable going in and out of the toilet, despite the queue, as if a person were able to get into the room with you, you'd be in big trouble
  3. one inside, they were horrible. no windows (obvs) so no natural light, claustrophic, and whiffy, in a way that suggested some people had sprinkled when they tinkled

give me a row of cubicles in a ladies loo any day. all i ask is for there to be soap in the soap dispensers

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 06/10/2019 18:01

That someone could follow you in and you'd be trapped element concerns me and seems particularly dangerous given the recently released stats on rape in schools.

ArnoldWhatshisknickers · 06/10/2019 18:04

I'm not crazy about them either, Bernard, I worry that someone will faint or otherwise collapse in them.

Fainting while peeing is quite common among men, it's a blood pressure thing apparently (Mr Whatshisknickers had this happen enough times as a younger man to ask his GP about it) so this point is not just about women's needs.

historylover · 06/10/2019 18:05

@TheProdigalKittensReturn

But no, it's only ever girls who bully in schools and the mixed toilets obviously have now solved that....

Harriedharriet · 06/10/2019 18:19

I agree completely with TEQUILLA - women are GROSS in the bathrooms they use. We need to protect our males from the degrading experience of having to relieve themselves in environments that are covered in feces, have bloodied pads all over the floor and smell. I propose that we FORCE WOMEN INTO SAME SEX LOOS. They can no longer share with men. That will learn 'em.
And TEQUILLA, could you let me know where the money came from for these amazing toilets in the THREE schools that you were involved in? I will go there myself and ask for a cheque for my local school. All problems will be resolved beautifully.
Thank you!!

Yep, payment incentives to be first convertors when academies were introduced. Don't get me started on that though.

saraclara · 06/10/2019 18:35

Jeeze.

Tequila has been calm and rational throughout this thread, and has spoken about the schools she knows, and how this move has been succesful for everyone concerned, You'd think MNers would be glad of any steps to prevent bullying, and this is what those schools have achieved.

Why people are accusing her of saying things that she hasn't said (and indeed she's said the absolute opposite of what people are accusing her of saying) I don't know.

And come on! I can't believe I'm the only person who regularly finds herself in a womens toilet that's been absolutely disgusting!
Some of you will make anything up in order not to agree with someone.

Regularly?

No

Never ever have i been in a toilet with blood or poo on the floor or walls, I have seen the occasional drip of wee or blood on the toilet seat, and the occasional toilet with poo in it that hasn’t been flushed

Just to clear it up...as no one on mumsnet is worth the effort of me making anything up

BernardBlacksWineIceLolly · 06/10/2019 18:56

I can't believe I'm the only person who regularly finds herself in a womens toilet that's been absolutely disgusting!

I 100% do not regularly find myself in a women’s toilet that’s absolutely disgusting

It’s just not a thing in my life

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 06/10/2019 18:57

And believe me

If i did say any prayers i would tonight be thanking the lord god above that i dont have to have a wee in the toilets that tequila and saraclara have to frequent

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 06/10/2019 18:59

If I saw poo smeared on the walls I'd assume mental illness or drug problems, honestly. It's not something I've ever actually seen. If I saw blood everywhere I'd assume it was a murder scene and call the police.

Similarly, "Calm" and "rational" are being deployed here in ways that bear little to no resemblance to reality as the rest of the world knows it.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 06/10/2019 19:02

If HR regularly have to email staff about not smearing bodily fluids all over the loos I suspect that they may need to review their hiring practices. If I were an employee at such a company I'd be wondering what being hired there might say about me.

TequilaPilates · 06/10/2019 19:03

TheProdigalKittensReturn

Who on this thread has said anything about poo or blood smeared on the walls though?

I've said about wee and poo on the toilet seats and used sanpro just left on top of the bins not in them. Apparently none of you have ever seen this though so I'd love to know where you find such pristine public toilets?

Our local Tesco is currently subject to a Facebook campaign about the state of the toilets with customers threatening to boycott the store as they are so disgusting. I'll have to.pist on there telling them that they are all deluded as it absolutely cannot be true according to posters on Mumsnet.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 06/10/2019 19:04

I’ve only seen one loo with poo up the walls. It was a unisex one in the petrol station of a motorway service station (that’s how desperate I was). I held it. Honestly it looked like someone had exploded a bucket of chocolate ice cream.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 06/10/2019 19:06

I probably shouldn't have laughed at that...

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 06/10/2019 19:07

I should have taken a photo because I’ve never really been able to describe fully the full horror adequately in words...

TequilaPilates · 06/10/2019 19:07

And again, don't bother reading the post just make it up to suit yourself.

I never said there were bodily fluids smeared everywhere I said hr warned staff that the toilets would be closed because of the state they were being left in and that they did not expect the cleaners to deal with it. That included wee on the seats and people not flushing the toilets or constantly blocking the toilets with loads of toilet paper.

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 06/10/2019 19:10

I haven’t posted that i dont believe that filthy toilets exist

Im sure they do...ive just quite obviously not been in them

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 06/10/2019 19:17

Still not seeing any indication of how making toilets unisex would make them cleaner...

truthisarevolutionaryact · 06/10/2019 19:26

It's always a worry when someone states that they are "involved' with a school and claims to know so much about girls and bullying - yet their comments display a deep hostility and bias against women and girls.

TequilaPilates · 06/10/2019 20:11

truthisarevolutionaryact

I know so much about girls and bullying having been a victim of it.

And I don't have a dislike of women and girls - I have a hatred of bullies and a hatred of anyone who claims that girls and women are incapable of being bullied simply by virtue of the fact that they are female.

It's a kind of reverse of "boys will boys".

TequilaPilates · 06/10/2019 20:12

being bullied

Should read being bullies
