Girls wearing skirts not allowed into school - could only be Brighton

Apparently “gender neutral” means trousers aka the male default. This is utterly insane. I mean I wouldn’t have minded the choice of trousers or skirts for either sex but only trousers?

I know I should but I can't get het up about this. Yes, trousers may be the male default but they are also the practical option. I have to say I think anything that doesn't impose impractical clothing on girls is a good thing. None of the boys will ever have had to deal with skirts blowing up, skirts over their head showing underwear when doing cartweels etc.

Phimma · 06/09/2019 16:10

It's Lewes, not Brighton!

littlbrowndog · 06/09/2019 16:10

The girls were locked out of school and the police called

For wearing skirts

The teachers were wearing skirts

I wouldn't have a problem with this at all.

MythicalBiologicalFennel · 06/09/2019 16:19

I have said this on the other thread. Trousers for me are uncomfortable, restricting and unpractical. Luckily I am an adult in a job where I am valued for my brains and clothes are irrelevant so I can wear whatever I want.

The way that school has handled their uniform policy and that particular protest is insane.

SarahTancredi · 06/09/2019 16:21

But then how will the transgender students show they are a girl? Hmm

Sexist nonsense. They could also allow the boys to wear skirts then all the uniform choices would be gender neutral then!

Poor kids.

littlbrowndog · 06/09/2019 16:25

But why are the trousers gender neutral. ?

Kit19 · 06/09/2019 16:27

Sorry Lewes my apologies

I agre @SarahTancredi personally I’d have loved to have the option of wearing either. Skirts in winter was no fun

It’s more that gender neutral defaults to trousers for all rather than a choice. If girls want to wear skirts why shouldn’t they

I know several schools where only trousers, no skirts, has been the uniform for years. Given the length of skirts I see some school girls in and the peer pressure for other girls to do the same, I would rather our local school had a trousers only policy.

BernardBlacksWineIceLolly · 06/09/2019 16:29

there was such a simple solution to this. school uniform is grey trousers or a grey knee length skirt. pupils may wear either

job done, and I didn't even have to call the police.

So simple....

Funny isnt it really, one group of people get to sue schools to wear the skirts and get in the papers. The others get the police called on them and locked out.

Wonder why that is...

But don't wear them if you've grown over the summer; a Nottinghamshire schoolgirl did and her trousers were deemed to be too short.

CountTessa · 06/09/2019 16:35

Trousers are not a male default.

In my 45 years of life I have rarely worn a skirt or dress. I would say you've got a rather 1920's attitude to fashion.

I think it's brilliant.

And Lewes is most definitely not Brighton

BertrandRussell · 06/09/2019 16:37

Gender neutral always means default to male..

spongedog · 06/09/2019 16:38

I saw this at lunch time and absolutely loved seeing teenage girls and their mums standing up for what they wanted, which was to be able to wear a skirt. (But like many other women I prefer trousers but respect that women may want to wear either).

BernardBlacksWineIceLolly · 06/09/2019 16:39

when a school is actively trying out keep pupils out they really need to have a good hard think

how the fuck are you going to teach pupils if you won't even let them in the building

JoyceJeffries · 06/09/2019 16:39

The police are now being used to enforce dress codes on girls. What a time to be alive!

BernardBlacksWineIceLolly · 06/09/2019 16:40

I think it's brilliant

you think it;s brilliant that a school called the police rather than admitting pupils and actually teaching them something?

wowsers

Chickenish · 06/09/2019 16:41

I remember being at school. I found trousers extremely uncomfortable the one time I tried them. Why does gender neutral = male attire?

BernardBlacksWineIceLolly · 06/09/2019 16:42

I suppose the school is teaching the girls that society will be obsessed with what they look like and people will try to control how they dress and they'll get judged no matter what they do

so if that's what they were trying to teach, achievement unlocked

happydappy2 · 06/09/2019 16:44

The Head has played this so badly-blatantly removing the rights of the girls to wear skirts-this policy discriminates against girls who wish to wear skirts (as they have done previously.) A skirt is not an offensive item of clothing FFS.

wizbitismynizbit · 06/09/2019 16:44

If women and girls want to wear skirts, then they have every right to wear them. Not everyone wants to wear trousers. In fact it's not suitable for some women to wear trousers as they can cause thrush and other uncomfortable and nasty problems.

It's wrong to force them to. And the fact the police have been called... what a waste of resources. I'm so angry on behalf of these girls.

SarahTancredi · 06/09/2019 16:45

so if that's what they were trying to teach, achievement unlocked

Probably back down when they realise their crowd control /unpaid bouncers were missed and they had to actually control the classes fir once..

Poor girls. What a way to treat them

Juells · 06/09/2019 16:46

The students, some wearing skirts, then tried to get into the school past the teachers and police officers who were standing guard at the entrance checking uniforms.

Blimey. Police officers!

I'd say this was what caused the annoyance... ^The school forced all pupils to wear trousers in 2017 after “concerns” were raised over the length of skirts and to cater for its transgender pupils . I'd be livid if the whole uniform in my children's school was changed to facilitate one or two pupils. Even if my daughter preferred wearing trousers 😜
