Apparently “gender neutral” means trousers aka the male default. This is utterly insane. I mean I wouldn’t have minded the choice of trousers or skirts for either sex but only trousers?

Though if he can’t pull his trousers up he probably wasn’t that cunning

MargueritaBlue · 10/09/2019 08:30

It certainly hasn't been me claiming that shorts and trousers are masculine - quite the opposite in fact. It's me that's been saying they are unisex and challenging the posters who gender them

Well that is not correct. A large part of this thread has been taken up by your ridiculous suggestion that in the cause of equality the school should give the option of trousers and shorts to boys and trousers and skirts to girls.

You have actually gendered shorts as suitable for boys but not girls.

You still haven't the grace to admit you made a spectacular error in relation to Wimbledon- an error which blows a hole in most of your argument.

JessicaWakefieldSV · 10/09/2019 08:32

The thing about trousers is, at least with uniforms, there’s not much going on in terms of style anyway. Whereas uniform skirts are so weird and ugly and have a definite style, girls want to adapt them. My summer school uniform was actually nice and flattering for all shapes, covered bulky pads without embarrassment and we could have it long or just above the knee with rules on how short it could go. Most of us liked them as they were and so there were no issues with them being too short or revealing.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 10/09/2019 08:33

Our school had non uniform rules regarding what was written on t shirts and they did say no crop tops or strappy tops

They sent one boy home who had camouflage gear on

Dd did go to college in a very small boob tube, apparently everyone does it...i doubt that! Hmm

MargueritaBlue · 10/09/2019 08:34

That to me is a school that has forgotten how to manage children without resorting to banning things

Yes it is.

DecomposingComposers · 10/09/2019 08:35

I don’t like seeing young men with their arses out of their pants either but they’re everywhere!

But they shouldn't be at school and both boys and girls should be expected to keep their underwear covered in school - it's not appropriate in that environment.

LangCleg · 10/09/2019 08:35

I think we should prorogue school uniforms entirely.

I have no idea what purpose thread filibustering serves in the minds of the filibusters but I suppose it at least enables some funny jokes.

I particularly enjoyed one tube/two tube nomenclature, so thanks Tyro!

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 10/09/2019 08:35

I dunno jessica

In our school the ‘in’ boys wear them as tight as possible and shorter so they can show off their non uniform socks Grin

To the extent that some wear girls skinny trousers so they can get them as tight as possible!

DecomposingComposers · 10/09/2019 08:36

Ok, sweetie

Not necessarily. The girls at my son's school don't seem to have taken up the option they now have of wearing trousers and still wear their kilts. Whether uniform skirts are "weird and ugly" is a subjective view.

MargueritaBlue · 10/09/2019 08:39

I'm really surprised you haven't more to say about the glaring, sexist inequality of the Wimbledon dress code.

MargueritaBlue · 10/09/2019 08:42

But they shouldn't be at school and both boys and girls should be expected to keep their underwear covered in school - it's not appropriate in that environment

How odd however that the solution is to ban one of girls' options rather than enforce school rules.

Fraggling · 10/09/2019 08:44

Lol is this still going?

Is the whole she he thing to avoid discussing martinas gross oppression of men and how Wimbledon code (skirt or shorts) means women get more choice because although men can wear skirts they probably won't, so women should be banned from wearing shorts.

It's a ludicrous position to adopt and claim the motivation is to defeat sexism and the hideous oppression of men who are offered the same options as women.

DecomposingComposers · 10/09/2019 08:44

See, constant baiting of me to get me to reply and then when I do cries of "derailing".

I was not the only poster who didn't know Wimbledon allowed shorts - how about badgering them too?

And I'll apologise to you when you apologise to me for accusing me of being too thick to remember what I'd written when it was you who made the mistake.

Don't bother addressing me again I shall ignore it.

LangCleg · 10/09/2019 08:46

Don't bother addressing me again I shall ignore it.

Of course you will, dear.

Fraggling · 10/09/2019 08:49

Lots of posters didn't know.

You're the only one who believes the dress code to promote inequality of the sexes because men are oppressed by it.

Soontobe60 · 10/09/2019 08:50

Did anyone else laugh out loud at the news item yesterday morning, where two girls and their mothers from the school were being interviewed? On mother/daughter pair had short skirts on and as they were sitting on bar stools the mother kept flashing her pants, then ended up siting with her hands in her lap to hide them for the rest of the interview. The other mother wore trousers (she'd read the memo about seating arrangements) whilstbher DD had on a longer skirt so her pants were well and truly covered up.
Neither girl could give a coherent argument as to why they should be allowed to wear skirts apart from not wanting to buy trousers for their last year in school. They also incorrectly said that the school called the police because they were trying to get in wearing skirts.
I'm all for the rights to protest, and being allowed an opinion on things such as school uniform, but these parents were informed about this in June. They had three months to make their feelings known, but chose to do it in a carefully orchestrated glare of publicity. Pathetic.

Tyrotoxicity · 10/09/2019 08:51

But its usually framed as the girls distracting the boys

Highlighting this.

Girls aren't distracting boys.

Boys are allowing themselves to be distracted.

We need to enforce higher behavioural standards on males here, not limit females.

JessicaWakefieldSV · 10/09/2019 08:53

Whether uniform skirts are "weird and ugly" is a subjective view.

That’s true. I haven’t seen all of the uniforms in the world and did have one that was pretty good. But generally speaking, style-wise there’s more going on with skirts, more ways of adjusting them too.

We had regulation knickers we had to wear with our uniform. Huge big dark blue hot pant type things! To be honest they were really comfy and I felt better wearing them, much like the regulation ones I wore when playing netball.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 10/09/2019 08:53

They are schookids - what level of debate did you expect?

A boy wants to wear a skirt and it becomes the human rights case of the century (even - as in a particular case in the US - when he insists on wearing a short skirt that shows that he is very much a functioning male). A girl wants to wear a skirt and it is a bit of a joke.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 10/09/2019 08:54

Neither girl could give a coherent argument as to why they should be allowed to wear skirts apart from not wanting to buy trousers for their last year in school

Right, that seems ok to me, maybe that was their problem with the whole thing.having to buy new uniform for their last year

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 10/09/2019 08:55

Spot on lord

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 10/09/2019 08:55

Maybe they should just try the argument ‘because I feel like a girl’. That seems to work.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 10/09/2019 08:57

Skorts are the way forward
