Apparently “gender neutral” means trousers aka the male default. This is utterly insane. I mean I wouldn’t have minded the choice of trousers or skirts for either sex but only trousers?

Short short skirts are not appropriate for school (or the office)

For the same reasons we dont wear a bikini to work

AppleKatie · 06/09/2019 21:31

Skirts also inhibit them in practical lessons (eg drama) where they are reluctant to join in to the same extent as boys for fear of flashing their pants (which despite the skirt length they really don’t want to do)

Do you ever actually go to the cinema or a theatre? You know where you might see a female actor in a dress.

Er yes I do regularly.... actors do not wear skirts as short as school children with rolled up skirts unless they intend to show their pants which may well be appropriate in the film/play but it isn’t in my classroom.

Generally in the acting world short skirts are not worn for rehearsals or physical theatre work.

HTH

There are some truly dim and exaggerated posts on here.

I am not dim. But you are rude! I am not exaggerating I’m describing an uncomfortable truth that I see every day.

I encourage girls to bring trackies or yoga pants for my lessons. Some choose that option.

littlbrowndog · 06/09/2019 21:33

You in charge of the skirts gone ?

You measuring the skirts ?

Wha5 about the boys. You measuring the tightness of their trousers ?

Is i5 just girls you judge ?

MartiniDry · 06/09/2019 21:34

Turn this on its head.
This is one school which, if this policy continues, won't have some silly little boy stamping his size 12s and going to the press demanding to be permitted to wear a skirt.

Yes, I'm looking at you, Madigan.

AppleKatie · 06/09/2019 21:36

I can’t speak for others but I do also ask boys to wear looser trousers to lessons sometimes. Mainly to spare their blushes - two different boys split their trousers completely in my lessons last year!

The points I’m making are about care and wanting the children to be comfortable and ready to learn. Because I like them and want them to succeed.

I would agree it seems the school in this case handled it badly.

But it is wrong to think the only motivation for controlling uniform is a bizarre hatred of kids.

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 06/09/2019 21:36

Mid thigh is not short short. It's perfectly OK. And even if it was short then that's fine.

I've worn the shortest of skirts, didn't prevent me from having an education.

It's to comparable to a bikini in the slightest.

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 06/09/2019 21:37

not comparable

Purpleartichoke · 06/09/2019 21:39

So only girls were required to buy new uniforms even if they had old pieces that still fit or hand-me-downs available?

ashtrayheart · 06/09/2019 21:47

Love how trousers are considered 'boys' uniform' when it suits the agenda being pushed! Trousers are worn by men and women equally. Skirts not so much...

School girls have always fucked things up for themselves for as long as I can remember by wearing the shortest skirts they can Grin

I would gladly see a 'wear what the fuck you like' approach to school uniform just to stop the endless crap relating to the subject tbh.

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 06/09/2019 21:56

Love how trousers are considered 'boys' uniform' when it suits the agenda being pushed! Trousers are worn by men and women equally. Skirts not so much...

But that's the whole point of gender equal clothing. Men are free to wear skirts, there is nothing that prevents them from wearing skirts? If men want gender neutral clothes then why won't they wear skirts?

RosesAndRaindrops · 06/09/2019 21:58

Why aren't short skirts appropriate for school or office?
So what, a female shows a bit of leg?!
OK, I can see where the problem lies if it is actually part of the uniform that you wear a certain dress style, whether it be at school or work.
If there's a dress code, you stick to it.
Can't get offended at girls/women showing leg if the dress doesn't say no skirts.
I know I prefer skirts to trousers

Waterandlemonjuice · 06/09/2019 21:59

This is such utter bullshit, it makes me 😡😡

ALoadOfTwaddle · 06/09/2019 21:59

Were you told twaddle that you weren’t allowed to wear a skirt ?

Nope. Most girls just chose not to. Until now I'd assumed it was similar in most places, hence my surprise at the uproar.

most adults have black trousers in their wardrobes
I don't. I hate wearing trousers.

Hence my use of 'most' rather than 'all'.

Do you ever actually go to the cinema or a theatre? You know where you might see a female actor in a dress.

Depends on the type of skirt. A pencil skirt is pretty damn restrictive in my experience.

MargueritaBlue · 06/09/2019 22:00

CassianAndor

margueriteyou do know this is the FWR board? Where we can chat and apply class analysis and looks at things from a feminist viewpoint? Look all around an issue, think things through? Discuss and debate?

Ooh is it really fwr? I do love a nice bit of patronising feministplaining.

Why don't you apply that comment about class analysis to the posters applying their personal experiences? Especially the idiotic comment about never getting thrush wearing trousers.

"oh it's class analysis" isn't a trump card when so much of what is being said is nothing more than personal preferences.

There are some really vile comments being made about girls on this thread for a so called feminist board.

GoneToTheDock · 06/09/2019 22:00

Ok, so if I can show some leg with a short skirt then why cant I wear a bikini?

RosesAndRaindrops · 06/09/2019 22:01

But that's the whole point of gender equal clothing. Men are free to wear skirts, there is nothing that prevents them from wearing skirts?

School would. How many schools are happy with boys routinely wearing skirts?
(Perfectly happy to be shot down and told I'm wrong, lots of schools do let boys wear skirts actually?)

MargueritaBlue · 06/09/2019 22:01

Depends on the type of skirt. A pencil skirt is pretty damn restrictive in my experience

Yes of course there is only one type of skirt- what a ridiculous comment.

ALoadOfTwaddle · 06/09/2019 22:04

Why aren't short skirts appropriate for school or office?

Same reason it's inappropriate for men to go in bare-chested (or in a see-through body stocking). It's not a fashion parade and professional dress generally calls for the baring of as little flesh as possible.

MargueritaBlue · 06/09/2019 22:05

Most girls just chose not to. Until now I'd assumed it was similar in most places, hence my surprise at the uproar

My son's school had a very strict uniform policy of knee length kilts for girls and cotton dresses in summer. They now allow trousers. Very few girls wear trousers.

ALoadOfTwaddle · 06/09/2019 22:06

Yes of course there is only one type of skirt- what a ridiculous comment

My point (look up, you might see it flying over your head) is that many school skirts are of a pencil or similarly restrictive style, so I can well imagine them inhibiting movement.

RosesAndRaindrops · 06/09/2019 22:07

You in charge of the skirts gone ? You measuring the skirts ? Wha5 about the boys. You measuring the tightness of their trousers ? s i5 just girls you judge ?

Wargh, stop press, I'm agreeing with Littldog. Anyone would think that women concerned about women's rights didn't have to be one tracked mind or that we can't disagree every now and again Grin Doesn't mean we're not on the same page when it comes to women's rights sometimes lol

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 06/09/2019 22:09

Ok, so if I can show some leg with a short skirt then why cant I wear a bikini?

Wear it if you want to.

ALoadOfTwaddle · 06/09/2019 22:12

Wear it if you want to

You might get fired though.

ashtrayheart · 06/09/2019 22:12

Ah come on men may be technically free to wear skirts but social convention means that they aren't. Kilts excepted.

MargueritaBlue · 06/09/2019 22:14

My point (look up, you might see it flying over your head) is that many school skirts are of a pencil or similarly restrictive style, so I can well imagine them inhibiting movement

I can't think of any school uniform I have seen which has a pencil skirt as a uniform skirt. How odd that you would focus on such a strange choice. Uniform skirts are usually A line, pleated or kilted.

Even if this (imaginary) school uniform skirt were A line your point is still ridiculous given the range of skirts available.

I get it it - I really do. Some of you really hate skirts and dresses. Not only do you hate them you (general you) seem to think this makes you a better feminist and gives you (general you) free rein to be patronising to other women and make vile, judgemental comments about girls.
