Bunbury’s Public Service Announcement 3.1

The useful Bunbury Guide to Spotting Community Disruptors is constantly evolving.

The best research and advice is not to engage with community disruptors and trolls. As ever, if you suspect troll activity, report it to MNHQ.

This is a continuation of the first Public Service Announcement thread:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3438714-Bunbury-s-Public-Service-Announcement-2

Thread 3 was deleted with this note from MNHQ; We're sure there will be a Bunbury 4 around soon, but we'd be grateful if we could draw a line under the issues raised in this thread if there's to be a new one.

If and when you see threads plopped into FWR, especially a curious repeat of well worn topics, maybe check for poster history before engaging.

There are a number of posts/posters/threads that are reproduced on Twitter or Facebook to foment controversy using screen shots & flagging to either MNHQ to have threads or posters deleted. Sometimes, it’s used to approach commissioning editors with ideas for articles. It’s a tiresome tactic that we’ve had several community disruptor posters who themselves post the comments that they then highlight elsewhere as purported evidence of racism, religious intolerance, anti-men sentiments, or transphobia.

Some helpful links can be found in the first posts on thread 2 (linked above) but in essence FermatsTheorem recommended “that in the absence of a block/hide poster button, I suggest the following strategy (given that you're talking to the lurkers).

Do not name check the sealion. Instead, respond to a depersonalised paraphrase:

"It is sometimes erroneously suggested that blah. Blah is wrong for the following reasons (short and pithy). If you need more information re. debunking blah, here's a link."

Then (this next step is important to combat derailment) go back up thread to the last useful contribution to the discussion, make sure you do name check that contributor, and pick up the discussion from that point.”

The tone of MN moderation is way off at the moment

a mod came onto the christmas bargains thread and said that if affiliate links were posted the thread would be deleted

the chuffing christmas bargains thread

you know, the one that's been running for umpty years and is an MN institution. deleted!

it;s like the modding team know nothing about MN. have they done a role swap with the modding team from data lounge maybe?

and another one saying don't go lass. I have a lot of respect for you and would be sad if you stopped posting here.

Was going to say FFS that's ridiculous, the Crimbo bargain thread is all about links to bargains, love browsing there!
Have affiliate links ever been allowed there though, don't think they have? Thought it'd have come under some kind of advertising or self profiting rule or something, I dunno
Anyways, yeah still baffled as to what would have warranted one to Lass Confused

BarbaraStrozzi · 11/09/2019 18:31

the chuffing christmas bargains thread... have they done a role swap with the modding team from data lounge maybe?

Brilliant, Bernard.

Oh gosh, very brave mod there. Or maybe they were tired of life and wanted some excitement

Though i would NOT piss off the Christmas crew myself

BernardBlacksWineIceLolly · 11/09/2019 18:42

the christmas crew feel very strongly about christmas. we also don't like people posting affiliate links particularly. but we don't want MNHQ to delete the thread for heavens sake, we want them to deal with posters who try to turn a profit from other MNers. it's pretty simple really.

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 11/09/2019 18:43

it's pretty simple really

Using a sledgehammer to crack a nut

BernardBlacksWineIceLolly · 11/09/2019 18:46

and the christmas bargains thread is my happy place, so i was pretty sad to find the weird modding even making it over there Sad

TruthOnTrial · 11/09/2019 18:59

Btw who is bernard? Love wine ice lollies! What a great invention. Sorry, kept meaning to ask, but dont want to derail!

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 11/09/2019 18:59

Black books

Love it 😊

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 11/09/2019 19:00

Sorry truth

Its a tv show

Well worth watching

TruthOnTrial · 11/09/2019 19:01

I think, and its my theory on my own, is that MN is pretty full of the disruptor types just now. Lots of places, where similar tactics are employed.

EmpressLesbianInChair · 11/09/2019 20:39

I think so too, Truth.

TruthOnTrial · 11/09/2019 20:51

Thanks, Yes, love it! His name was bernard!? Blush oops! Seem to have forgotten that.

TruthOnTrial · 11/09/2019 21:42

Emotional blackmail seems to work too bloody well...sigh

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 11/09/2019 21:45

It really doesn't help the Mumsnet still have no set rules, what's okay for one mod isn't for another.

Creepster · 11/09/2019 21:57

IIRC according to the latest MN rules update any criticism of the mods is a banning offense.

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 11/09/2019 22:03

Where is that creepster

Datun · 11/09/2019 22:08

Yes, where does it say that? Rudeness and aggression is seen as not on. It says nothing about honest criticism.

One thing we can simply no longer tolerate, however, is rudeness and aggression towards our mod team who are doing their utmost to allow this difficult but important debate to go ahead on Mumsnet, sometimes in highly stressful situations. So please do bear that in mind.

TruthOnTrial · 11/09/2019 22:11

any criticism of the mods is a banning offense

Seriously? Any 'criticism'? That's very open to interpretation!

Datun · 11/09/2019 22:13

It doesn't say that. And it doesn't say it's a 'banning offence'.

Creepster · 11/09/2019 22:13

It is rude and aggressive to criticize the mods is my interpretation of the statement.

Creepster · 11/09/2019 22:15

I also interpret we will no longer tolerate as banning.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 11/09/2019 22:18

I think, and I may be wrong....that started because someone made a very blunt and out of order comment about a mod with a disability being a token inclusion?

Or was it about the mods son with a disability being a token inclusion?

It was some heated thread that went too far and got way out of line over the way attacks on disabled posters were delt with.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 11/09/2019 22:21

So not about general criticism but people making personal attacks at staff members.

TruthOnTrial · 11/09/2019 22:21

Oh, well thats very different.

I wouldn't say criticism is synonymous with aggression or rudeness.

Nor would I interpret not be tolerated as banning

I would say they would not allow it to go unchallenged, deleted, etc., whenever they come across it.

Having issues with mod's decision are not necessarily criticisms either. You're not criticising just because you disagree.
