J K Rowling now follows Magdalen Berns on Twitter!

This is amazing. Rowling is one of the only people that could end this madness easily.

Smile yay!!

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 24/06/2019 08:56

That's good news.

SingingLily · 24/06/2019 08:57

I know someone who works for her. Rather them than me. That's all I'm going to say.

CassianAndor · 24/06/2019 08:57

YES!!!!!!!

LizzieSiddal · 24/06/2019 09:01

Great, though I wonder how she’ll deal with the inevitable remarks from TRAs re her following a “nasty Terf”.

Anlaf · 24/06/2019 09:03

Is twitter going wild over this?

Old thread - from her previous thoughtcrime:
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3069688-J-K-Rowling-might-be-a-Terf

SingingLily · 24/06/2019 09:04

Then they'll have picked the wrong one. Once she makes up her mind, nothing will shake her.

Bluestitch · 24/06/2019 09:06

Meh. She's untouchable in terms of her success, nobody is going to organise a successful Harry Potter boycott. But when she liked a GC tweet ages ago and was criticised she backtracked and said she 'accidentally' clicked on it. I'm more impressed by those who have put themselves in the firing line with alot more to lose than her. It's easy to go public once others have worked hard to turn the tide.

HumberElla · 24/06/2019 09:14

Magdalen is a unique and brilliant voice. She is fiercely intelligent, articulate and passionate about her point of view. She doesn’t take prisoners and consistently makes mincemeat of woolly illogical thinking. She is a force.

I’m not surprised JKR follows her. As a similar fierce intellect I imagine they would get on.

charlestonchaplin · 24/06/2019 09:17

Rowling is one of the only people that could end this madness easily.

That’s a pretty crazy statement! Why do you have so much faith in the power of a single human being? I know JK Rowling is much admired but I didn’t realise she has attained God-like status among a vast swathe of the population.

Nonibaloni · 24/06/2019 09:22

I’m reading the Harry Potter books with ds. Not sure she’s the feminist I’d choose. She definitely subscribed to maddona/whore for women in the books. And female characters are pretty or clever.
Maybe it’s just because the books are sooooo long but I’m not impressed.

NoSquirrels · 24/06/2019 09:35

I was disappointed with the “middle-aged moment clicking on stuff” backtrack last time. I’m very surprised she’s decided to follow MB. She knows what she’s in for now, so quite deliberate.

I think one thing JKR has always done is a) known her own mind and b) been willing to learn. She’s developed a lot since the HP days and it was a baptism of fire for her really.

I admire her - hope she stands by her follow this time.

Mermoose · 24/06/2019 09:41

Nonibaloni Ah, I know what you mean but I think she's great even if she's not perfect (and who's perfect?). McGonagall, Sprout, Mrs Weasley - they're all good female characters. I love Professor Grubbly-Plank, even though she only has a small part.

Nonibaloni · 24/06/2019 09:45

I definitely need to get over it it. But there’s hardly any physical description of the male characters and Umbridge has me pulling my hair out.
I think what I mean is she’s very successful but not necessarily a role model.

HugsAreMyDrugs · 24/06/2019 09:49

She has liked several gender critical tweets AFAIK. However she has only backtracked on one of them and even then I'm pretty sure she was being sarcastic.

GrumpyGran8 · 24/06/2019 10:49

I don't follow Berns, but her anti-Soros tweet meant that I'll probably never will. Attacks on Soros are used by the hard right, especially in America, as a cover for anti-semitism, and anybody with a functioning brain should have already known that. The Demonisation of George Soros
I don't know what kind of pro-trans groups his Open Society Foundation has funded, but it's awarded grants to hundreds of thousands of worthy liberal causes, and Soros doesn't dictate who the grants go to.

Iconapop · 24/06/2019 10:55

I am astounded that after everything that has happened you think JK Rowling could easily stop this - it’s much more likely they will simply turn on her and she will be ‘excommunicated’ and her every utterance poured over to find further evidence of thought crimes.

Apollo440 · 24/06/2019 11:00

Only a mass collective concerted effort can stop this now. And it will take years. But I'm in.

CassianAndor · 24/06/2019 11:00

I don't think she could stop this but she is pretty untouchable.

What could happen is that they will go after her publishers. Publishing is saturated with brainless woke trans allies. But she will be the biggest earner for both her publishers, I should think (maybe not her adult one, but one of their biggest) so I doubt even that would have much effect.

I think you can't underestimate what a mahoosive figure she is in publishing.

NoSquirrels · 24/06/2019 11:10

Her publishers will stand by her. She’s done nothing wrong and she is huge big business.

CassianAndor · 24/06/2019 11:13

I know for a fact that one of her publishers is very 'trans positive' though. They will stand by her because £££££££s but they'll be some kind of fall out, I'll bet.

You don't have to do anything wrong for the TRAs to go after you and your employers dump you, as we know. But she is almost bigger than her publishers. which is a pretty unique situation for a British author.

ZebrasAreBras · 24/06/2019 11:13

I love JK. I'm fairly sure she is gender critical, but I think is mindful of the effect of this on her young fans. Understandable - she had such a massive backlash last time. Thousands of young people telling her how she was literally killing them - hyperbolic nonsense, definitely - but cannot be easy to take when you're so well known as a children's author.

CassianAndor · 24/06/2019 11:40

yes - but we/she need to remember that thousands of young people on Twitter out of the millions who read her books and/or watch the films is actually a drop in the ocean.

PCohle · 24/06/2019 11:43

She's already come in for significant criticism for how she, and the new films, have handled Dumbledore's sexuality and for the casting of Johnny Depp. I really don't think she's particularly "untouchable" on this issue.

AgileLass · 24/06/2019 11:51

They’re coming for her... someone has gone through all of her followers in order to convict her of THOUGHT CRIMES

Straight to the gulag for you, Joanne.
