J K Rowling now follows Magdalen Berns on Twitter!

This is amazing. Rowling is one of the only people that could end this madness easily.

Lumene i mean in the loosest sense. Hermione, mcgonigal and Mrs Weasley are honest and true and described quite specificity as not beautiful. They make sensible decisions based on fact and aren’t swayed. Luna, Parvati and Fleur are beautiful but are silly and distracted. Pansey (the slythrin girl), bellatrix and unbridge are bad and ugly.

Ok I have definitely over thought it and I’m a book snob but it bugs me.

TalkingintheDark · 24/06/2019 18:06

This is very cheering. Hopefully she will speak out at some point, but this is a very good sign to be going on with.

GrumpyCatLives · 24/06/2019 18:07

This thread has gone bonkers!

Please don't accuse Magdalen of racism. She really isn't.

Luna is not beautiful in the books - only the films.

Bellatrix and Narcissa are beautiful but terrible - cold and cruel.

JK says she wrote her main characters as the "geeky kids" - which is lovely.

The enduring theme throughout is motherhood and motherly love. It starts with Harry's mum dying for him, and ends with Draco's mum lying to Voldemort that Harry was dead - so that she could get back to Draco at the castle. Then Molly killed Bellatrix who was fighting her daughter, and taunting her about her children.

I love the strength of her female characters.

ZebrasAreBras · 24/06/2019 18:43
this is the full interview - which explains it more - for anyone who loves JK as much as I do Wink
HandsOffMyRights · 24/06/2019 18:46

I'd like to hear a conversation between JK and Emma Watson on gender ID...

Manderleyagain · 24/06/2019 19:09

Oh god I've just looked at the thread. An academic says 'thank you this is important work' and the person who trawled through her follows says it was moderately traumatic (at least only moderately).

GrumpyGran8 · 24/06/2019 19:28

Thanks for the link, PencilsInSpace. I'll read it later.
I've now read more of Bern's tweets and she strikes me as very conspiracy-minded. I already follow loads of level-headed GC women, so I can afford not to follow her.
I know every movement has its share of tinfoil-hatters - I'm an SNP member and follow many Indy accounts! - but I get worried when I see this mentality creeping into feminism.

MrsOnions · 24/06/2019 20:26

RedTrek I can confirm JK sends me messages via my cats

I see she’s following Fionne Orlander too. Which is very nice.

PencilsInSpace · 24/06/2019 20:46

I've now read more of Bern's tweets and she strikes me as very conspiracy-minded.

Why? Please provide examples.

My tolerance for vague unsubstantiated smears against courageous feminist women has worn extremely thin of late.

PencilsInSpace · 24/06/2019 20:50

Sorry GrumpyCatLives, that was off topic I know.

On topic, I'm pleased if JKR is at last finding her feet a bit and the more women who overcome their fear and speak up the better.

DuchessSybilVimes · 24/06/2019 20:56

Oh thank goodness. I saw the thread title earlier but didn't click because I was terrified of JKR having said something woke and shit. So, so pleased. I love her and it would break my heart if she jumped on the trans train.

Barracker · 24/06/2019 21:53

However, she is not following Vulvamort.

This is obviously an oversight.

BlackForestCake · 24/06/2019 22:55

I know almost nothing about Harry Potter but surely Hermione is pretty AND clever?

KatvonHostileExtremist · 24/06/2019 22:56

KatvonHostileExtremist · 24/06/2019 22:57

Sorry, that was at barracker's brilliance

Riverside85 · 24/06/2019 23:07

Nonibaloni There’s absolutely loads of physical description of all the male characters.

AnotherLass · 24/06/2019 23:34

"surely Hermione is pretty AND clever?"

Nah Warner Bros added the pretty bit. She isn't pretty in the books. I really liked that personally - that a girl can be valued even without being pretty. I felt seriously let down by the films making her into another stunning glamour model type

HugsAreMyDrugs · 24/06/2019 23:57

It's actually implied several times throughout the books that Hermione is pretty.

Ineedacupofteadesperately · 25/06/2019 00:06

I actually love the female characters in the Harry Potter books. I think they do fall into mostly good or mostly bad but that's true of all characters in the world (Snape IMO is the only one who's a bit of both really) and is also true of a lot of kids fiction.

I love that there is this powerful force of motherly love running through the whole story. Really recommend watching the videos posted by Zebras - thank you, it was great to hear in JK's own words the intention behind some of the female characters and their story. I always thought what happened with Narcissa at the end was one of the most powerful parts of the books. Narcissa's love for Draco overcomes her fear of Voldemort.

If you watch the video, right at the beginning she says something along the lines of how she couldn't have simply switched Harry to be a female character because you can't just put on a dress and change gender (or something like that) - she's conflating sex and gender there but I agree with the general sentiment...

GrinitchSpinach · 25/06/2019 00:13

Zebras, as the mother of a daughter who has (attached) for her light switch, I [heart] your entire comment.

ZebrasAreBras · 25/06/2019 00:25

I love it, Grinitch Grin

I'm a massive JK fan, in case you couldn't guess, and Ineedacupoftea yes, I agree, Narcissa had such a powerful part at the end. As did Molly. That JK interview brought tears to my eyes when I first heard it.
