Observer: Trans model Munroe Bergdorf says she feels threatened by other women

www.theguardian.com/society/2019/mar/10/transgender-model-threat-from-women

“I don’t feel safe because of other women,” Bergdorf said to the Women of the World audience. “That’s really weighing heavily on me.”

The mixed-race former L’Oréal model also said she had “dreaded” attending the event due to the threat she detects from “cisgender” females – those women who were assigned their gender at birth.

What does those women who were assigned their gender at birth mean Observer?

MB does not approve of current discussions re male bodied people competing in women's sport. MB feels 'threatened' by women and says there is no threat to women from transwomen.... well, where to start. Male violence, see also transcrimeuk.com.

Amazes me that those who wish to live as if they had been born a woman lack insight into the lives of women (born women).

due to the threat she detects from “cisgender” females

Does she assume people’s gender?

Reminds me of the quote ‘men are afraid that women will laugh at them. Women are afraid men will kill them.’

justmesathereyawning · 10/03/2019 14:27

Meanwhile, as the "women of the world" die in "menstrual huts", are killed by their fathers/male partners, are beheaded by the men who treated them as sex slaves, are forced to carry pregnancies to term after being raped...(all stories I've read in the news just this week)

.... Fucking shame on you Bergdorf. Fucking shame on the organisers of this shitshow. Fucking shame on whoever sat politely through this petulant "word hate" whinge without storming the stage. Fucking shame on the Guardian for reporting it.

Well said Justme

Yes, fuck off Guardian/Observor. What a contribution to the unfolding debate about women’s sport. So glad I cancelled my membership.

RockyFlintstone · 10/03/2019 14:45

Of course Munroe is scared. Munroe and their ilk are terrified that they might not be entitled to ride roughshod all over women without women speaking up about it. Petrified that not everyone thinks that the world revolves around Munroe. Scared shitless that women might be engaging their critical brains and standing up for themselves using that most dangerous weapon of all: an articulate and coherent argument.

LangCleg · 10/03/2019 14:51

The problem is that the extreme trans ideology is alienating a lot of women and driving a wedge between women and trans women, which simply wouldn’t be there if people like Munroe were slightly more respectful of our differences and the role of female biology in our oppression.

Yes it would. Men cannot become women and women and girls are harmed by society pretending they can, regardless of extremist rhetoric spouted by the MRAs spearheading the movement. It is for men to budge up and accommodate their non-conforming brethren, who are nothing whatsoever to do with women.

I was at this yesterday and The One article is taking a tiny part of what MB said and using it as clickbait.

I lurk in this forum a lot and I am as worried as any of you about the need to protect women only spaces, the rights of women and transwomen in sport. But, MB spoke for about 7 mins in a slot with 4 women talking about an idea they were working on. MB was there to plug a book about how all people and society are in a constant state of change and transition. Reject that all you like, bit honestly her slot wasn't about this fear at all and it only came up because Jude Kelly asked about it. The WOW festival is open to all - men women and children, and all three are represented on panels usually (a man had a similar spot on the Friday).

I actually had more empathy for MB after hearing her speak. She came across well.

Loraline · 10/03/2019 14:53

Duh typo. The One should read The One.

Also, MB didn't say she was scared of women. She talked about being scared of the reaction she'd get at WOW compared to previous years.

Loraline · 10/03/2019 14:53

ARGH. Phone autocorrecting!

The One = The Obs!!!

youllhavehadyourtea · 10/03/2019 14:56

it only came up because Jude Kelly asked about it.

really.

Loraline · 10/03/2019 14:58

Yeah. It hadn't formed part of the slot she had to speak about. It was one of the follow up questions.

RockyFlintstone · 10/03/2019 15:02

She talked about being scared of the reaction she'd get at WOW compared to previous years.

What because some women may no longer be fawning over them?

justmesathereyawning · 10/03/2019 15:02

MB was there to plug a book about how all people and society are in a constant state of change and transition.

MB was there to push the trans agenda, which de-centres women from their own events and serves to threaten their safety, privacy, dignity and right to define female biology as central to female oppression and the feminist cause.

Fixed that for you.

youllhavehadyourtea · 10/03/2019 15:05

A follow up question from the conference organiser, so not at all pre-prepared of course.

Loraline · 10/03/2019 15:07

Ok. If you like. The thing is, people like her aren't going away. You can listen, learn and try to move forwards in a way that works for us all or you can dig in shrugs

terryleather · 10/03/2019 15:11

I've no idea how MB manages to find the time to give interviews etc, what with appearing to spend so much time having a wank in a long hot bath of other people's oppression...

Loraline · 10/03/2019 15:11

Of course the question was preplanned but my actual point was that it was a 15 second moment in a longer conversation that The Obs picked up on to report as clickbait.

McTufty · 10/03/2019 15:15

You can listen, learn and try to move forwards in a way that works for us all or you can dig in

I don’t disagree with this - but would you say the same to Munroe?

justmesathereyawning · 10/03/2019 15:15

Ooh yes, let's all "listen and learn" to men (+/- surgery and hormones) who want to masquerade as us and invade our spaces, sports and bodies.

No.

Knicknackpaddyflak · 10/03/2019 15:16

Mmn.

Women are afraid of being raped, assaulted, harassed, being afraid to go to smear tests or fall asleep on women's hospital wards, losing their physical dignity and privacy, being used as unwilling props in other people's sexual fantasies, not being allowed to say no or move away from someone they feel sexually threatened by, losing the right to homosexuality, losing women only facilities and spaces, their language and self definition and the right to gather apart from men, or even talk about their biology. And the TRA answer to that is: shut up, you should be raped/murdered/put in gulags/you're worthless and stupid and evil for even feeling those fears.

MB is afraid of women disagreeing with them. The gender critical women's answer to that is: oh for fucks sake.

Yes come on ladies, listen and learn.

I mean women are always the ones everyone listens to aren't they, maybe its time they stepped back a bit and let someone else have a turn whilst they do the listening for a change.....

Oh, wait.

Loraline · 10/03/2019 15:24

I don’t disagree with this - but would you say the same to Munroe?

Totally would and I know people dislike her so much because she doesn't. I'm just hoping that by going to events like this she may hear other views that penetrate her barriers too.

Ooh yes, let's all "listen and learn" to men (+/- surgery and hormones) who want to masquerade as us and invade our spaces, sports and bodies.

We have to. May be galling but there is no other choice. If we don't listen we can't have a counter view. This issue isn't going to go away by Grey Rock techniquing it.
