Miranda in court

I didn't realise Miranda Yardley was in court today over alleged transphobic harrasment.

Debbie Hayton
@DebbieHayton
At Basildon Magistrates Court where Miranda Yardley is on trial for transphobic Harassment. The prosecution applied for reporting restrictions to prevent the complainant Helen Islan from being named. The judge has not granted them. So Helen Islan can be named.

Sending Miranda good luck vibes.

And MdR did an excellent job for Margaret Hodge, which I thoroughly aplaud.

Popchyk · 03/03/2019 15:09

Lui Asquith joined Mermaids as their Legal Caseworker in July 2018. Identifies as non-binary.

Is very connected in the LGBT scene (was vice-chair of Amnesty LGBT).

The letter from Mischon de Reya to Miranda arrived a month after Asquith started with Mermaids.

hackmum · 03/03/2019 15:11

Also really shocking to read Joani’s account if how hard this has been for Miranda. This use of the law to suppress dissent is terrifying. As for Islan calling Debbie Hayton a man in a dress, what’s that if not transphobic?

DoctoressPlague · 03/03/2019 15:24

What does puzzle me is where the money is coming from

Exactly.
I'm also thinking about Shark's case here, but I understand we mustn't discuss it as it's ongoing.

WeRiseUp · 03/03/2019 15:32

Miranda chose to keep this case very quiet.

Absolutely.

I was so surprised to hear of it at the last minute. There would have been a big Basildon crew otherwise.

RiverTam · 03/03/2019 15:32

A factual statement? That’s the point, Miranda does not see ‘man in a drss’ as transphobic. Debbie might, I don’t know. But it’s factually correct and isn’t necessarily making a judgment. A child could say that and they wouldn’t be being transphobic.

RiverTam · 03/03/2019 15:33

I don’t agree that every GC feminist supports Miranda.

WeRiseUp · 03/03/2019 15:35

I don’t agree that every GC feminist supports Miranda.

I don't think every gc feminist agrees on anything.

SharkBastard · 03/03/2019 15:39

I've not seen any negative response to this case from the GC side, but then I've been permanently suspended from Twitter. Any idea who is against this?

hipsterfun · 03/03/2019 15:45

I’d love to hear more from Miranda on all this, if that’s a possibility.

WeRiseUp · 03/03/2019 15:47

Miranda was so knackered from having only a couple of hours sleep last night on the webcast I think he probably needs a bit of r & r before he can piece it all together.

Floisme · 03/03/2019 15:53

I've not seen any outright negativity but nor have I seen anyone tweeting along the lines of 'OMG I had no idea until today about Miranda Yardley's court case. I stand with Miranda' etc etc. I've seen some retweeting of comments but - aside from Joani Walsh - not much discussion about the case and what effect it might have had. That surprises me.

WeRiseUp · 03/03/2019 15:56

There was a lot of activity yesterday. It seems to be overshadowed by what's going on with sportspeople today.

Bowlofbabelfish · 03/03/2019 15:57

the idea that this is a test run for silencing other political/religious/whatever views is an interesting one. We seem to be inching towards a form of totalitarianism and it’s frightening

hipsterfun · 03/03/2019 15:58

Of course. I look forward to Miranda’s take in due course.

Popchyk · 03/03/2019 16:00

There were reporting restrictions on this case, right?

Which the judge lifted only on the day of the actual hearing.

That's why nobody knew about it. Maybe Miranda was advised by his solicitor to keep quiet due to the reporting restrictions.

Popchyk · 03/03/2019 16:12

Miranda confirmed that it was two officers from West Yorkshire Police who travelled to Miranda's house to question him.

WYP then passed the case to Essex Police.

hipsterfun · 03/03/2019 16:25

Nobody expects the West Yorkshire Police!

Miranda in court
DeRigueurMortis · 03/03/2019 16:34

I'd have loved to have been a fly on the wall when the CPS were deciding to prosecute this case.

How on earth they came to the conclusion they did is utterly beyond me.

MindTheMinotaur · 03/03/2019 17:40

Hipster Grin

littlbrowndog · 03/03/2019 18:12

Yeah
Sorry Miranda. This must have been so horrendous and stressful fo4 you

That person wanted to destroy you
Didn’t care
She really ought to get prosecuted for this
And as for the CPS are they all idiots ?
Miranda has been banned from twitter I think an£ Facebook for some no doubt bigotry made up by a TRA
wish we had known about this before so we could of supported you

EweSurname · 03/03/2019 18:16

Jane Fae is trying to turn this into a #believeher moment, despite the fact that the courts very clearly did not because there was a dearth if evidence.

This isn’t a sexual assault where it’s a he says versus she says, and I find it in very poor taste to try and conflate the two. Helen islan has plenty of opportunity to show harassment, when Caroline Farrow and thousands of other women are denied even the opportunity, which makes this even more galling.

DoctoressPlague · 03/03/2019 18:21

J "Domestic-violence-gone-wrong" Fae calling someone else a pseudo-feminist. Hmm

ToeToToe · 03/03/2019 18:33

It's an absolute bloody joke isn't it?

And a majority of our MPs are swallowing this crap, or reportedly too afraid to speak out about it.

Tranactivism is misogyny writ large, and a complete travesty on reality, science and language- and this farcical court case where an actual transexual can be taken to court by a Mermaids activist just demonstrated the sheer barmy-ness of the whole thing.

Datun · 03/03/2019 18:36

If this was really an attempt to make gender critical discussion transphobic, then thank fuck the magistrate threw it out.

Although I still don't understand how the CPS can decide, mid season, as it were, that something is unlawful, when it isn't.

But judging by how they were complicit in the most one-sided, sexist GIRES propaganda going into schools, perhaps it's unsurprising.

I'd like to give Miranda a big lip smacker for going the bloody distance. For women and free speech.

And I'd like to buy that magistrate a drink.
