Following public interest regarding the proposed grant to Mermaids UK, The National Lottery Community Fund undertook a review of a number of concerns expressed in relation to the charity.

This review did not find any grounds to withhold funding from Mermaids UK. The grant has therefore been approved by the England Funding Committee.

As part of our grant management process, we will work closely with Mermaids UK to ensure they are supported in their development.

Oh er………...

Angryresister · 19/02/2019 15:03

Well there's a surprise....while "breast ironing" is considered child abuse or assault, this so called charity is propagating the idea that young women and girls should be looking forward to mastectomies by preparing themselves with "binders". Why, what is the difference?

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 19/02/2019 15:03

Anyone who thought the outcome would be otherwise hasn't quite grasped that this is being pushed from above, self ID will happen regardless of public opinion.

Glad this is posted on here-it is just sickening that National Lottery are giving so much cash to Mermaids, without doing any due diligence checks on the potential harm, trans ideology does to children.....so depressing, no screening out of ASD kids or other mental health issues, just fast track to transition even though it most likely won't bring you happiness.

VickyEadie · 19/02/2019 15:17

I'm sickened by this and by Mermaids in general.

Meanwhile, the BBC features on its website an article about how wonderful 'Desmond is amazing' being an 11-year-old drag queen is.

It's like there's some massive plot to enable the abuse of children and we're all powerless in the face of it.

We are not powerless. Jean Hatchet this week got Three to take down their awful advert using Henry the 8th by putting pressure on them. Women buy Lottery tickets. We need to stop buying them and start telling the company why. If you get a Lottery advert in your Twitter feed that would be a good place to start. If you have an account, cancel it and let them know why.

If you scroll down after their news release (on the Lottery website) you can download the review.

Not braved it yet. Still in shock despite this being a fait accompli.

Owen Jones thinks it's marvellous. Quelle surprise.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 19/02/2019 15:25

We are not powerless

We are not, we have the power to keep tlaking, and keep informing.

Laws will come in, but laws only work if the public are willing to follow them.

DpWm · 19/02/2019 15:25

They were never likely to withdraw the grant, but the exposure and bad publicity has damaged Mermaids reputation, has surrounded it in the suspicion it deserves, and therefore it's only a matter of time.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 19/02/2019 15:30

I believe the money will be handed out in 5 tranches with reviews in between. I guess it may still be possible to partially reverse this

nauticant · 19/02/2019 15:30

Look at it this way. When the scandal of young people mutilated in the cause of an ideology breaks a few years from now, there'll be less scope for the "how were we supposed to know all wasn't fine?" excuses that just about everyone will be keen to hide behind.

One thing we can do is get organisations to make "in spite of the concerns we think it's all fine" decisions, rather than just suiting themselves with no one watching.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 19/02/2019 15:30

Exactly, the public now know what is going on, people are now informed and can take steps to help their children.

This is why it's so so important to talk, It will be the public that will protect children, not the charities, clubs and government.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 19/02/2019 15:31

Oh FFS

" It is suggested that sex and gender come about through a combination of biological,
social and psychological aspects of life that build our individual identity and that when
we begin to investigate who we are and the gender we feel ourselves to be, things can
become very complex"

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 19/02/2019 15:32

"The Yogyakarta Principles of 2006 are a universal guide to human rights which affirm
binding international legal standards with which all States must comply"

This is incorrect no?

AyeRobot · 19/02/2019 15:33

Exactly, nauticant

At least reviews are being forced to happen and one day...

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 19/02/2019 15:35

"In this context, an organisation which promoted a medical pathway above all other
options would not be an appropriate recipient of our grants. Mermaids have reaffirmed
their position that they are young person centred and do not encourage, influence or
direct young people or their families to pursue any one pathway. Furthermore, Mermaids
does not present in their promotional material as a charity that focuses on medical
treatment or provides medical advice. " Hmm

DpWm · 19/02/2019 15:35

FFS that report

Allegation a) Supporting illegal doctors
Mermaids denies this Allegation.

Allegation b) eg encouraging mixed sex loos/changing rooms
Mermaids denies this Allegation

Allegation c)
Eg Encouraging procedures outside of NHS guidelines
Mermaids denies this Allegation....

FFS of course Mermaids deny all the allegations!
