At first I was delighted to see thisat last a big name in women's sport is speaking up! but then I got angry all over again that this utterly obvious point has to be explained to an adult, in this case, a Guardian journalist. It boggles the mind.

I'm with the commenter in the screen shot who gently queries Jo Maugham's Hear, Hear given his previous pusillanimous behaviour and equivocation.

Wordthe · 22/12/2018 11:01

I think Martina may have moved things on towards an inflection point

NotTryingHardEnough · 22/12/2018 11:01

sackrifice and howard well, apart from those, yes. But ykwim.

Igneococcus · 22/12/2018 11:04

The comment with the highest number of recommends, starting with the sentence "Martina Navratilova is correct." has currently 535 recommendations. I have never seen such a high number for any comment in the Times under a trans-related article.

FloralBunting · 22/12/2018 11:06

Do you know what makes me the happiest about this? It's a massive story, in relative terms, and it's probably going to bring this issue to an even wider audience, and it wasn't a man, with a man's fame and privilege that brought it to everyone's attention.

It's a woman, an honest to goodness woman, a lesbian no less, famous for her own achievements and courage.

That's not how I thought it would go down, and I am elated.

Yes!

People are not stupid. They know that this is complete nonsense. The question is whether any politician with real clout will have the courage to say what most of the country is thinking.

Floral Absofuckinglutely!

So great to see Alison Moyet back on Twitter defending Martina. Come on Caitlin Moran, David Baddiel and co. your turn now?

Alison Moyet (@AlisonMoyet) Tweeted:
.@Martina Navratilova was a beacon for gay pride and dignity at time when there was no cyber wall of liberals to defend her. She is no ally. She was the vanguard.
She is a veteran.
Respect, won already.

Here's the tweet about the thirteen year old. Screen grab from the twitter backlash so I'm not sure of the background.
I hope Martina has had a good look at Rachel's twitter feed though. I've just been having a scroll through on my other twitter account. Almost every tweet is ShockShockShock
It's hard to pick out the best. If you're blocked and haven't got a second account it's worth getting one just for the lols.

I wonder if anything ever said by such a person has ever gained such unanimous support from DM commenters?

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 22/12/2018 11:17

Hadn’t considered it from that perspective but fuck yes!

IfNotNowBernard · 22/12/2018 11:19

I can't see why not. Martina Navratilova is a legend whose legacy is part of the fabric of the establishment nowadays. Why hasn't she been "knighted or whatever?" We need
Dame Martina Xmas Wink

derxa · 22/12/2018 11:19

As if I couldn't love Martina any more

IfNotNowBernard · 22/12/2018 11:19

That was a reply to errol btw

SophoclesTheFox · 22/12/2018 11:24

Am very much enjoying McKinnons massive hubris taking on Martina Grin and in such a deliciously unhinged manner.

Do you think MckInnon has understood McKinnons overreach yet?

NotTerfNorCis · 22/12/2018 11:27

McKinnon is being very quiet today...

Is the man capable of having a ‘f**k, what have I just done moment’ you think?

FloralBunting · 22/12/2018 11:32

Enjoy it, my friends. We've had precious few of these kinds of moments, and there will be a riposte at some point, but today the sun is shining and we have pressed forward.

waxy1 · 22/12/2018 11:36

It read as though at a certain point, Martina realised she was sailing close to arguing with an idiot on the internet.

Katvonbatshit · 22/12/2018 11:38

McKinnon is a nasty misogynistic bully

Macareaux · 22/12/2018 11:38

Morning has barely arrived in North America. McKinnon is not capable of self-reflection and seems to operate on the basis that no publicity is ever bad publicity.

SophoclesTheFox · 22/12/2018 11:45

How does it feel when pretty much the whole world thinks you’re a cheat, Rache? Hmm?

Tell you what: next time you fancy making a banana of yourself on Twitter, why don’t you go after should Lance Armstrong? I think you’ll find you’ve got loads in common Smile

ErrolTheDragon · 22/12/2018 11:50

no publicity is ever bad publicity.

RMs website should definitely be publicised (to clarify matters for any who think the Dr denotes either medical or scientific credentials... as an aside, who the heck styles themselves redundantly as 'Dr X Y, PhD'Confused). And RMs book...maybe it's got more to it than the description implies but if so you'd have thought it might manage at least one non-scathing review?
