At first I was delighted to see thisat last a big name in women's sport is speaking up! but then I got angry all over again that this utterly obvious point has to be explained to an adult, in this case, a Guardian journalist. It boggles the mind.

Wonder if McKinnon is going to tell martina how to cope with lesbian dick because you know it would be trans phobic not to

Datun · 22/12/2018 08:22

I wish someone would ask mackinnon that. Make them say it.

littlbrowndog · 22/12/2018 08:24

Oh yes

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 22/12/2018 08:39

Any link/screenshot of the boast about beating a thirteen year old? I’ve not seen that either and am curious

AngryAttackKittens · 22/12/2018 09:02

I can't get over the arrogance of McKinnon presuming to lecture Navratilova about sports. What do we think the chances of a female athlete doing that are?

Also, a person's genitals may not be relevant to their sporting ability, but their Y chromosome and the associated size and strength are. Which of course McKinnon knows, but reality is so inconvenient sometimes.

TeatimeCloud · 22/12/2018 09:26

I wonder how British Tennis will respond to the RMs of the tennis world. In their regulations the rule seems to be that genital and testicular surgery is required for trans women to compete in the top level women’s game www.itftennis.com/media/253215/253215.pdf

Trouble is that top level tennis, like football, is entertainment.

People/TV will pay good money to see Navratilova vs Evert. McKinnon or another mediocre man, no.

sackrifice · 22/12/2018 09:39

Watching all this in real time, wow.

Those Daily Mail comments. Star

HumberElla · 22/12/2018 09:56

Martina is an amazing woman and has fought throughout her career to thrash stereotypes. I spent my youth following tennis and have huge admiration for her both as an athlete and a woman.
She has faced down misogyny and homophobia/lesbophobia in her sport, and she has retained huge dignity and integrity. I’m so delighted to see such support for her in the press and comments today.

Needmoresleep · 22/12/2018 09:58

Interesting how many comments are from the US. And straightforward. Not obvious DM nutters.

Macareaux · 22/12/2018 09:59

Alison Moyet come in to defend Martina

McKinnon's temper tantrum reminds me of the joke about the man at the airport asking for an upgrade and being refused. In a rage, he stomps back up to the desk and yells at the stewardess 'DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHO I AM?'

'One moment, Sir, and I'll try to assist you.' She smiles sweetly and presses the public address system.

BING BONG

'I have a gentleman here who doesn't seem to know who he is. Can anyone help?'

Tish boom Xmas Grin

HumberElla · 22/12/2018 10:03

That’s a fantastic comment from Alison Moyet!

NotTryingHardEnough · 22/12/2018 10:05

Seriously though Hmm .......Christ. There are no words for McKinnon.

sackrifice · 22/12/2018 10:07

There are no words for McKinnon

.@Martina Navratilova was a beacon for gay pride and dignity at time when there was no cyber wall of liberals to defend her. She is no ally. She was the vanguard.
She is a veteran.
Respect, won already.

Welcome back Alison Moyet Star

FloralBunting · 22/12/2018 10:21

Alison Moyet with a magnificent tweet.

A-bloody-men.

silentcrow · 22/12/2018 10:30

I can't get over those comments on the Mail article!

The trickle-down on this will be interesting. How many "lesser" public figures will feel emboldened to speak out now that a true hero of equal rights has been attacked. Or quietly delete tweets they've previously said in support of "LGBTQblah" without knowing what's really going on. Ditto the Mermaids article in the Times.

Keep an eye out for a subtle change in the alphabet soup - if people express their support for LGB without all the rest I think we'll see wider understanding developing.

AnyFucker · 22/12/2018 10:32

Emma Watson take note

AngryAttackKittens · 22/12/2018 10:35

Alison Moyet is correct. It is McKinnon who can only hope to one day be considered an ally by Navratilova.

You're not doing very well so far, Rachel, it has to be said.

Wordthe · 22/12/2018 10:36

Go Martina😊
they were talking about her on LBC this morning unfortunately I got sidetracked and forgot to listen🙄

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 22/12/2018 10:43

McKinnon really has done a sterling job of peak transing people. And martina’s courage has emboldened some equivocators to speak up
