At first I was delighted to see thisat last a big name in women's sport is speaking up! but then I got angry all over again that this utterly obvious point has to be explained to an adult, in this case, a Guardian journalist. It boggles the mind.

McKinnon is a fanatic who genuinely believes transwomen are women, and anything that stops them competing in women's sports is discrimination. If 'cis' women can't keep up - tough.

The following is a thought experiment. Imagine that you open a door and find two people having a massive screaming match. It would be difficult to work out whether the people involved were right or wrong. Any attempt to try to get the two people to stop screaming at each other and explain what was happening would result in a deluge of joint talking and mutual interruption. There would be something really odd about the scene as the door opens; I mean, there is Martina Navratilova, and there is someone who nobody has heard of, arguing as if they are on an equal plane. Martina has apparently been nasty to someone according to the unknown person. Martina apparently didn't apologise, or did but not enough, or something. Oh dear, always happening on this Twitter, I don't see why people use it. Moment of madness? Too much to drink? The other person I've never heard of, well, presumably they don't have any power, but they seem to have been insulted, not sure what that's about. Hope Martina Navratilova isn't losing it like so many retired sports stars. Who's Renee Richards? I'd Google it all but I can't really be bothered with this, all a storm in a teacup and all a bit disgusting really.

The level of vitriol from Rachel is off the scale. Some have suggested that perhaps Rachel was unaware of who she was dealing with but Rachel is a similar age to me and absolutely would know Martina Navratilova. No question about it.

I think two things are at play here.

1. Rachel actually believes that Rachel and Martina are peers (in terms of fame, achievement etc). Which is clearly ridiculous.

1. Rachel is going straight into "you're saying I shouldn't exist" victim mode. When no, actually Martina was simply questioning the fairness of males participating in female competitive sports. In Rachel's autobiography it will be rewritten as a brave defence of Rachel's human rights.

I have zero interest in tennis and am not of an age to have seen Martina in her glory days but even I know who she is.

Broad spread geographically of the anglophone countries in those Daily Mail responses - UK, USA, Canada, Australia etc. McKinnon would certainly not be welcome in any self-respecting football team with RM’s unerring instinct for own goal after own goal. I agree the consistency of the responses is fascinating.

I think she has every reason to assert what we've all been thinking - Rachel is one nasty human being.
