A Trans Woman Was Asked To Leave The Women's Changing Room At A PureGym

Exclusive: The woman was told that "no men are allowed" in the women's changing room after gym staff received a complaint from another member.

How long until the backlash forces a change in policy do you think?

About 1 nanosecond. The member of staff should have said "no male bodied people are allowed in the female changing rooms" as then they'd at least been able to defend themselves without immediately succumbing to cries of transphobia.

Knicknackpaddyflak · 18/12/2018 13:40

Urgh that article. Always the same.

Sarah obsessed with her own feelings, her own needs, the importance of Sarah feeling comfortable and fuck everybody else. Sarah does not want to use an alternative provision, Sarah wants to do what Sarah wants to do.

Any woman daring to feel uncomfortable with the reality as opposed to Sarah's internal sense of self and not wanting to change in front of a male bodied person is just wrong and transphobic and ought to be stopped.

Male entitlement.

AncientLights · 18/12/2018 13:41

Told 100% from the TW's perspective. TW wants us to think about what it's like for a TW have that experience. But I have an idea: why doesn't the TW think what it is like for a lone woman to be faced with a male body in the changing room? Nah, didn't think that would happen.

GhostSauce · 18/12/2018 13:45

I'm still slightly lost on this.

So, 1 changing room full of people with penises. 1 changing room full of people with vaginas.

Person with penis is not comfortable in changing room with other people with penises, the same as theirs.

Room of people with vaginas are not comfortable with person with penis being in their changing room.

And yet the feelings of the person with the penis somehow trumps the feelings of a room full of people with vaginas.

Why?

GhostSauce · 18/12/2018 13:46

And I promise i'm not being obtuse. I'd just like to know why the comfort of that 1 person is more important than the comfort of the other people in the room.

ShotsFired · 18/12/2018 13:51

"She said 'I’m afraid you have to leave' because someone was made uncomfortable by me being in there."

They don't like it up 'em , do they?
Yet if they are "uncomfortable" then the entire world must immediately spin to their satisfaction.

ShotsFired · 18/12/2018 13:54

“In addition to male and female changing rooms, our gyms offer separate changing facilities and we support members to use the changing facilities that are best for them and take into consideration other members.

Funny how TRAs only want that consideration to go one-way.

I'd strongly consider joining puregym on the basis of their common sense and consideration for everyone, if I was in the market for a membership.

Popchyk · 18/12/2018 13:57

This person doesn't want to get changed with men who have penises.

Guess what?

Neither do women.

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 18/12/2018 13:57

Men’s validation >>> women’s right to safety, dignity and privacy

Gym’s and pools have been targets for voyeurs for as long as they’ve been in operation - they can’t afford to be totally accepting and inclusive of absolutely everyone and their self professed identities, because safeguarding is paramount.

BeUpStanding · 18/12/2018 14:00

FFS. Sarah was even offered the use of a gender neutral, accessible changing room but refused it. If all Sarah wanted was to use the gym, then why wasn't this an acceptable compromise?

And yes, the fawning tone of the article is rubbish as well. Not even a flicker of consideration as to how the women (the cunty type) might feel about the situation.

GhostSauce · 18/12/2018 14:00

2018 has been a total headfuck. I just don't know what to say anymore.

Stormwhale · 18/12/2018 14:01

@GhostSauce

Therein lies the problem. They believe their wants and needs trump ours. We do not agree. They are not interested in a compromise of a third space. They want nothing less than complete submission to their demands. It just doesn't have a good outcome for anyone.

BettyDuMonde · 18/12/2018 14:02

And where HAD Sarah been changing for the previous 10 months of her year-long membership?

GhostSauce · 18/12/2018 14:02

This person doesn't want to get changed with men who have penises. Guess what? Neither do women.

But...this person is therefore a complete hypocrite.

BettyDuMonde · 18/12/2018 14:03

Hypocrisy is ever-present.

GhostSauce · 18/12/2018 14:05

But it's just completely nonsensical.

Needmoresleep · 18/12/2018 14:06

The PureGym guidelines seem sensible:

PureGym has since issued detailed transgender access guidelines titled "Everyone Welcome", which are compliant with the 2004 Gender Recognition Act and seek to determine changing room use on a case-by-case basis.

It's only organisations like the Girl Guides who seem to feel the need to anticipate reforms to the GRA. We had a consulation, the responses are being considered, why does this person feel that they do not need to wait for the results before deciding what suits them...and only them.

Duncan Bannatyne saw this coming and, was pretty active on Twitter during the GRA consultation. .

"*2018 has been a total headfuck. I just don't know what to say anymore."

Same. Sad

hackmum · 18/12/2018 14:09

I notice the reporter misrepresents the 2010 Equality Act, apparently under the illusion that it is there solely to protect the rights of trans people.

The comments are mostly pretty stupid.

CottonTailRabbit · 18/12/2018 14:10

I recently joined a Pure Gym. I am so pleased at them putting womens' feelings above those of a male-bodied person who didn't want to use the gender neutral option that was provided for them.

I may send them a message saying I am glad they made this choice. Also that I am glad there was gender neutral changing space available for the TW.

Womantheonlykind · 18/12/2018 14:11

www.puregym.com/contact/

If you want to show support then PureGym have a contact page. I wish they would stick by the staff member who was applying logic in preserving single sex space as requested by actual women.

GhostSauce · 18/12/2018 14:13

So Sarah could have solved her problems and the problems of the women using the women's changing room, but using the neutral individual changing room.

She didn't want to change with penises. The women in the women's changing room do not want to get changed with penises.

Therefore why can't Sarah use the neutral/disabled?

If Sarah isn't comfortable getting changed around male bodies why should all other women be?

2rebecca · 18/12/2018 14:16

I go to a Pure gym. There are no cubicles, there is just one communal changing room and you then walk from there to the showers which aren't really suitable for changing in as they aren't big enough and you'd get your clothes wet.. I would be extremely uncomfortable having someone with a penis in that area. Changing rooms should be according to your genitals not your hairstyle and identity. Men will just have to get used to having feminine looking people with penises in their changing rooms.
