Keeping it classy, M&S.

Anyone use the M&S live chat successfully? I've waited to live chat and before anyone answered they ended the chat saying it's not available.

I’m more bothered about M&S selling this drink than I was when OP first posted. Thanks, posters who don’t usually post on FWR, you’ve kicked me into touch Grin

pennydrew · 24/10/2018 16:00

VerbeenaBeeks

So would M & S selling ‘rape-tini’ drinks be ok with you? Why or why not?

rightreckoner · 24/10/2018 16:04

It's a good point that they don't sell porn magazines. Why not I wonder? Is it because the reality of porn does not fit with their brand image?

VerbeenaBeeks · 24/10/2018 16:05

You can still buy it. This is about one retailer

Yes, that you're wanting to stop from selling or if they don't to change the name.

pennydrew · 24/10/2018 16:10

change the name

Yes. Why do you need to buy a drink with ‘porn star’ on it? How does it affect you if they change the name? What choice are you being denied? What about my choice not to be subjected to rape culture in my local M & S?

Italiangreyhound · 24/10/2018 16:11

Glitched "Porn is filmed sex. It is no more inherently exploitative than any other filmed activity."

This is simply not true. Sex is different from almost any other activity that could be filmed. The comment ignores the fact that normally, for most people, sex is private.

"There are plenty of places to access porn that is not exploitative."

I very much doubt that but even if it were ethicslly produced porn, by its very nature, is exploitive IMHO. For all parties and the knock on effect of spreading unrealistic views of womem and girls (in particular) in relation to sex is harmful.

Italiangreyhound · 24/10/2018 16:12

Can anyone come up an even tastier cocktail and re-name it.

What if the name were offensive to men? Would it still be so popular?

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 24/10/2018 16:16

Can't wait to try it! Don't see the issue with this one, it's a cocktail name.....

Myusername101z · 24/10/2018 16:23

@pennydrew I am in my 20s, I am glad your daughter is into it. I am a sociology teacher and the general consensus from teenage girls (before they learn about the subject and become passionate about it) is that feminism is embarrassing , that’s what it has become and I do believe it’s because of campaigns like this.

ErrolTheDragon · 24/10/2018 16:27

it's a cocktail name.....

On a shiny gold can, glamorising porn, in a place where I doubt many people would expect it. On a product which elsewhere is available under a more descriptive uncontroversial name.

Badly done, M&S.

ErrolTheDragon · 24/10/2018 16:28

campaigns like this.

It's not a 'campaign' FFS, it's an MN thread which might prompt a few emails.

OlennasWimple · 24/10/2018 16:29

Myuser - why do you think that younger teens feel like this?

I admit that I used to be a "why do we need positive action, women have got equal rights, being female hasn't been a problem for me" when I was younger, because it was only really when I a) had children and b) got older that I realised how the patriarchy still holds women back.

And that was before porn became mainstream and women starting saying things like "porn is just filmed sex and doesn't harm women"

VerbeenaBeeks · 24/10/2018 16:33

is that feminism is embarrassing , that’s what it has become and I do believe it’s because of campaigns like this

yes, turns people away and makes them eye roll and not take it seriously by making big issues out of a cocktail name being sold in a shop.

Glitched · 24/10/2018 16:34

@Italian how is porn by its nature exploitative?

Also there are many private acts that are ok to film and share provided people give consent.

There is nothing inherently morally wrong with sex or filming sex.

pennydrew · 24/10/2018 16:34

before they learn about the subject and become passionate about it

I’m glad they actually learn and then come to an informed position. Saying it’s ‘embarrasing’ for feminists to campaign against porn and rape culture, is really stupid.

pennydrew · 24/10/2018 16:36

Anyone that finds feminism ‘embarrassing’ really ought to have a long hard look at themselves. I think buying ‘pornstar’ drinks at your local M & S while you pick up Halloween treats for the kids is hugely embarrassing.

Myusername101z · 24/10/2018 16:46

Well sorry I just can’t get fire in my belly over a drink with the word porn being sold in m&s, when there are so many more huge issues that need constant attention. White ,middle class feminism at its best.

Glitched · 24/10/2018 16:46

@pennydrew

Rape is illegal. Porn is legal.

But this is a free market. Make a cocktail (is the word cock offensive) and call it whatever you like and see if it sells.

pennydrew · 24/10/2018 16:48

White ,middle class feminism at its best

Why are you assuming the race and class of women on this board? That’s fucked up. You think women of colour aren’t concerned about porn and rape culture? That’s fucked up.

PlinkPlink · 24/10/2018 16:49

If I'm drinking a Porn Star Martini or ordering a PSM, I don't think "Well there's only one thing for it now, I must become a porn star" or "Well this drink is fabulous therefore so is porn."

I also don't think because I'm drinking or ordering a Porn Star Martini, I'm going to be suddenly looked at like a porn star and therefore an object and therefore raped.

Men who rape look at women like that already, not because a drink has he words 'Porn Star' in it.

pennydrew · 24/10/2018 16:49

Have you listened to porn ‘stars’ talk about how common assault and rape is in the industry? Injuries? Especially anal and mouth injuries?

ErrolTheDragon · 24/10/2018 16:50

so many more huge issues that need constant attention.

S'ok, some of us can multitask.

CharlesChickens · 24/10/2018 17:02

If we let the fire market decide what people could buy, with no moral judgement, then they’d be selling children in Marks and Spencer’s, not cocktails.

VerbeenaBeeks · 24/10/2018 17:18

Since cocktails are predominantly drunk by women, I think the sexy names were invented as a way to try to embarrass women ordering them. It's like being groped as far as I'm concerned.

Ordering a cocktail with a sexy name is akin to being groped? Wow. That's why people aren't taking it very seriously, how on earth is ordering a cocktail like being groped? It's nothing like.
Being groped - serious. Ordering a sexy name cocktail - bit of a laugh.

pennydrew · 24/10/2018 17:22

VerbeenaBeeks

Yeah, sure, porn is hilarious. Routine rapes, horrific injuries, kids as young as 10 seeing it... what a laugh 🙄
