Keeping it classy, M&S.

Anyone use the M&S live chat successfully? I've waited to live chat and before anyone answered they ended the chat saying it's not available.

You think it's overprotective to keep kids away from references to porn? Really?

Yes, these people obviously haven’t seen this weeks headlines, or just don’t care about rape culture and porns contribution to it.

pennydrew · 24/10/2018 15:19

Porn is not illegal.
Using the word porn is not banned.

Oh for gods sake. Nobody is asking for the word to be banned. It’s not appropriate at M & S.

Do you care that the average age a woman/
girl enters the sex industry here is 14? No?

Myusername101z · 24/10/2018 15:23

God it’s ridiculous things like this that gives feminism a bad name, give it a rest fgs

pennydrew · 24/10/2018 15:24

God it’s ridiculous things like this that gives feminism a bad name, give it a rest fgs

What would you know about feminism? Being against exploitation of women is feminism 101. We won’t be giving it a rest anytime soon.

OlennasWimple · 24/10/2018 15:26

apparently it's only children who can't read who are too young to see the word "porn" Hmm

Given that most reception aged kids will be able to de-code the word, read it and ask what it means, clearly only pre-schoolers and adult children should be able to go into M&S, because otherwise we are denying some consumers their "choice"

Glitched · 24/10/2018 15:28

Being ok with Porn does not equal being ok with child or adult exploitation.

It is fine to use the word porn on an alcoholic drink. Presumably it'll be stocked in the booze department, not with kids toys.

MorrisZapp · 24/10/2018 15:28

Lol at the epic point missers.

But why? It's a tasty drink?

But why? Loads of pubs sell it?

But why? Puttanesca in Italian means prostitute?

But why? Men appear in porn too?

Yes to all the above, none of which are the point of the op.

MagicMix · 24/10/2018 15:29

The drip drip drip of pornification in our society is insidious and absolutely damaging to women and girls. I agree that objecting to one little drip is a necessary part of opposing the whole.

pennydrew · 24/10/2018 15:31

Being ok with Porn does not equal being ok with child or adult exploitation.

Yes it does. Because the industry is exploitative. Buying and selling bodies is exploitative. You’re supporting an industry that traffics children.

ErrolTheDragon · 24/10/2018 15:33

Being ok with Porn does not equal being ok with child or adult exploitation.

Do you have access to a source of ethically produced porn which in no way objectifies or degrades women and girls?

MagicMix · 24/10/2018 15:33

Being ok with Porn does not equal being ok with child or adult exploitation.

Only if you are profoundly naive about the porn industry.

VerbeenaBeeks · 24/10/2018 15:36

Pennydrew - you're getting me confused with someone else, I have never used the phrase "different hill to die on" or indeed anything resembling it Confused
A pile on isn't people having differing opinions. Which is what's on here. Personal attacks for having a differing opinion is though. There's a difference.

pennydrew · 24/10/2018 15:41

VerbeenaBeeks

Gosh it’s frustrating having to explain things over and over, things that are really simple. You asked about a ‘pile on’. Nobody accused you of being the sole contributor to that. I mentioned some of the repeated comments to the OP from several commenters as examples of the ‘pile on’, not examples from you. Are you deliberately trying to aggravate people by pretending not to follow really clear conversation?

Glitched · 24/10/2018 15:42

Porn is filmed sex. It is no more inherently exploitative than any other filmed activity.

There are plenty of places to access porn that is not exploitative.

pennydrew · 24/10/2018 15:43

RudeZebra

Can someone explain how this is a feminist issue? I'm genuinely confused.

Because it's something to moan about <

Another example

pennydrew · 24/10/2018 15:43

StylishMummy

This is making a farce of feminism - it's the name of a chuffing cocktail, a very well known one! <

Another

VerbeenaBeeks · 24/10/2018 15:45

Just came back to say doh, have re-read and it wasn't aimed at solely me, apologies but see you've beaten me to it and pointed it out already.
Different opinions are just that though - different opinions. Name calling or laughing at/mocking for having a differing opinion, not OK.

pennydrew · 24/10/2018 15:47

why are you targeting M & S?’

You're choosing to be deeply disturbed over a complete non issue.

On and on... it absolutely was a pile on and minimising an issue which many feminists think is a big problem.

Myusername101z · 24/10/2018 15:48

@pennydrew quite a lot actually, thank you for that patronising comment Smile , I think there are bigger issues than mns selling a drink with the word porn on it , and yes I do understand how damaging the porn industry is, but it’s the name of a drink it’s not as if they are selling porn magazines. This is likely to get picked up by the media and feminists will become a laughing stock once again as they did recently with Kleenex gate. Feminists are getting such a bad reputation to the point where young women are actually avoiding it and it’s things like this which are the cause of that.

pennydrew · 24/10/2018 15:48

Name calling or laughing at/mocking for having a differing opinion, not OK

Have you read the whole thread? Endless mocking. Constantly being told this was giving feminism a bad name- like being anti the sex industry isn’t actually common for feminists

VerbeenaBeeks · 24/10/2018 15:49

Oh for gods sake. Nobody is asking for the word to be banned. It’s not appropriate at M &S

Wanting it renamed and banned from use in M and S as you deem it inappropriate for there is a kind of censoring and banning in itself though

Glitched · 24/10/2018 15:51

Why not let the free market decide. If you don't like it don't buy it.

Why should moral outrage determine what other people can and cannot buy.

pennydrew · 24/10/2018 15:51

Feminists are getting such a bad reputation to the point where young women are actually avoiding it and it’s things like this which are the cause of that.

Oh please, that old chestnut. That’s been said to feminists since forever- the suffragettes were literally hated!

My teen is a proud feminist, as are her friends. Not sure which young women you hang out with but I have friends in their 20’s, 30’s and beyond who do not feel like that!

Are there bigger issues than the normalisation of porn, the sex industry as a whole and how that affects women all over the world? Hmmmm well I’m not listing them in order of importance, but I consider it an issue absolutely worth discussing.

pennydrew · 24/10/2018 15:52

Why should moral outrage determine what other people can and cannot buy.

You can still buy it. This is about one retailer.

OlennasWimple · 24/10/2018 15:57

Disclaimer: I don't live in the UK anymore so things may have changed since I was last there...

To everyone saying "why are you taking the kids into the booze aisle?" as if this is some kind of slam dunk for why it's OK for M&S to have products which say "porn" on them, I'm assuming that booze aisles are not age restricted, so there is nothing to stop children of any age going down that part of the shop. But, if the canned cocktails are being promoted in any way like the "ready to go" glasses of wine, I'd expect to see them in the fridges next to the sandwiches, and - particularly in the concessions at train stations - prominently displayed at the queue points next to the Percy Pigs
