If your teenage daughter had her first week at the University of Sussex this week this is what found in her welcome bag.

A Pot Noodle, A tablet of washing detergent, a sim card and an individual sized portion of instant coffee.

AND

A picture of a woman designed to look like she has spunk dripping down her face to sell toothbrushes. "whether you spit or swallow during your twice daily oral regime..."

She'll also find a drinks night event by the Student union being advertised all over campus. It has a picture of a dead eyed half naked woman laying in an empty bath...which advertises what? Fuck knows.

She will also find a copy of the student newspaper in her bag. On the front cover at the very top of the page is an article entitled "Transphobia and toilets". This is discussing the recent words of University of Sussex philosophy professor Kathleen Stock who dared to very (politely) question some aspects of trans theory.

Your daughter, if disabled, will also be concerned to see that some of the disabled toilets have been declared "for all genders". Which is lovely and inclusive but not ideal if you're disabled and need a wee and need to wait for an able bodied non binary male wearing lipstick to go for a shit first.

She will find that the "This Sussex Girl Can" all women only classes are open to all "women, trans gender people and non binary individuals" so just mixed classes basically .

So far so expected of university in general but what upsets me is that people wanted Kathleen Stock's job for having an opinion. She caused students to feel "unsafe" with her very words, but in a world where women are literally unsafe and sexual assault is endemic in universities, Sussex student union didn't think twice before objectifying its female students. If your employer gave you a goody bag with this card in it you could rightfully be making a formal complaint to your HR department. Why is it appropriate for university?

We can't discuss why it's always a woman advertising drinks, or toothbrushes without discussing women and the group of people who actually deal with the real repercussions of being women. It's a bloody joke. Why don't people care about actual sexism, real life objectification of women.

Duke of Sussex

Wouldn't happen - girls aren't allowed pubes these days, remember...

NameChangedAgain18 · 19/09/2018 08:21

Students Unions are revolting cesspits of misogyny and authoritarianism. This “suck a dick” goody bag disgusts me, but doesnt really surprise me.

sausagebap · 19/09/2018 08:26

Is this where the lecturer who had her students make lego sculptures representing intersectionality works?

NameChangedAgain18 · 19/09/2018 08:27

I was actually amazed and relieved to read that Kathleen Stock received tenture, I thought for sure Sussex would get rid of her, so until this thread Sussex had been going up in my estimation.

Stock already had a permanent job - it was a promotion to Professor she received recently. I really don’t think any university would sack an academic for taking the position she has, as she is speaking from a position of expertise, and universities are currently on a warning from the government over freedom of speech. The problem is always the students union and Twitter TRAs raising a mob and demanding sackings, plus a few other academics dishing out abuse and threatening your reputation.

Datun · 19/09/2018 08:28

How is achingly right on now meaning Women! To avoid being lonely get drunk and suck men's cocks.

I'm utterly sick to death of female emancipation being synonymous with men telling women to have sex.

cordeliaflynne · 19/09/2018 08:30

I can't help thinking that messages like this, aimed at young women, are one of the driving forces behind the increasing numbers identifying as men. It is so sad.

gendercritter · 19/09/2018 08:32

That's disgusting. If I had received that on starting university, I would have felt genuinely intimidated, out of my depth and anxious about what pressures lay ahead. There is already enough peer pressure out there.

Bowlofbabelfish · 19/09/2018 08:33

Grim. I went to uni about 25 years ago and as far as I can remember the welcome pack was tea/coffee, flyers for societies (sports, politics etc) flyers for pastoral services, vouchers for the local takeouts etc, pot noodles, cuppa soups etc.

Welcome to Sussex - know your place, wimmin!

Charliethefeminist · 19/09/2018 08:52

Bowl, totally agree, do students really think they're progressive and we are the old stick in the muds?

This thread is MN fabulous. Analysis and publicity of something truly horrible that has passed most people by, then the digging starts and more horrors are revealed, and finally the culprits are exposed. I'll be talking to my university kid about it, and my daughter. I don't suppose we can do anything to end this Dig In contract but I'd like to give it a go.

BiologyMatters · 19/09/2018 08:55

Oh look 3 no doubt woke bros behind this. What a shock.

OvaHere · 19/09/2018 08:58

Wow. This is appalling. How on earth did that get approved? Do the uni have no oversight in what the student union hand out?

wigglybeezer · 19/09/2018 09:00

DS has just finished Freshers week at what's generally regarded as a small, old fashioned uni, he hasn't mentioned anything to me ( he knows my terfy proclivities) but then his SU was kicked out of the NUS years ago for a different kind of wrong think...

Notonyournellly · 19/09/2018 09:01

Ugh that's grim. So edgy!!

Going off topic... no one swallows toothpaste, do they?

PineappleSunrise · 19/09/2018 09:05

Yes, progressive thinking these days is to allow yourself to imagine that the be-lipsticked, porny mouth dripping with toothpaste may belong to a woman with a penis.

NOT to ask why it's always a feminine mouth used when sex is selling something as boring as toothpaste. Hmm

hugoagogo · 19/09/2018 09:19

From the dig in site, one of the suggested ice breakers:
5. Girls
It’s unlikely because you’re a filthy fresher but if you have access to a group of young ladies, whether they’re from uni or your homelife, bring them to your flat for pre-drinks one day and most of the fellas you dorm with will want to talk to you.

Honestly, like moths to a flame. Scary.

FeminaSum · 19/09/2018 09:20

This is appalling. I started university as a mature student a few years ago and I'm glad that I wasn't given anything remotely like this.

I had plenty of reasons for not attending university at the traditional age but one of the contributing factors was that the impression I got of university was that it was like more school, except that you had to live with classmates and there was nothing to stop them from being loud at absurd hours of the night and keeping you awake, and you were expected to get drunk a lot and have lots of sex. I was quiet, studious, and not interested. I didn't have any family or friends who had been to university and could present a different perspective.

It's just awful that young women are being presented with images like this as representative of university life.

Zeugma · 19/09/2018 09:22

I'm not sure they're necessarily all that woke - although yes, they're appearing to be. I think it's maybe, depressingly, more cynical than that. It's all about the money

DukeOfSussex · 19/09/2018 09:27

Going off topic... no one swallows toothpaste, do they?

@notonyournelly No, that annoyed me as well. But it doesn't even make sense! Grin Thatt's why you have to monitor young children when they brush their teeth because it's not good to swallow toothpaste. I think it's the fluoride that's not great.

We provide the official student welcome box for 130 UK universities

Nice.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 19/09/2018 09:28

I am totally po-faced about that instruction to female students to dish out 2 blow jobs a day.

This is nuts type "humour" back again. At least before it was just aimed at men - to be giving this shit out to girls is grotesque.

Just imagine all the girls opening their welcome boxes and seeing that, that horrible sense of confusion and anger and upset you get when you are publically reminded YET AGAIN that you place on the planet is to service cock.

It's the leaflet equivalent of a man shouting "Suck my Cock" at a girl out of a van (which has of course happened to lots of girls by the time they get to university age).

The men who designed this are MISOYNIST CUNTS and that's the end of it.

Ifonlyus · 19/09/2018 09:32

I'm really mad after reading that OP. All the broflakes whining about needing safe spaces. Where's the safe spaces for our daughters to get an education without being objectified and porn thrown in their faces. I hope a newspaper pick this story up. Perhaps Everyday Sexism also.

Many girls I know haven't had boyfriends before they get to uni. Way to initiate them in their expected role as sex doll.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 19/09/2018 09:32

"That's disgusting. If I had received that on starting university, I would have felt genuinely intimidated, out of my depth and anxious about what pressures lay ahead. There is already enough peer pressure out there."

Maybe girls who don't like to suck dick twice a day shouldn't be at university.

It has been striking me for a long time that part of the aim / result of a lot of stuff at the moment is to filter out girls who are not "cool girls". I was a bit of a "cool girl" TBH but have grown into a not at all cool with men's sexual entitlement woman. As do most "cool girls". Essentially grown women and any girls who are not prepared to pretend to be OK with HAHAHA look a woman with come dribbling out of her mouth in my welcome pack! Should simply not acces spublic spaces go to uni etc, then the men/boys will be left with only the "right" sort of girls.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 19/09/2018 09:36

And let's be honest 99% of blokes would love that wouldn't they.

Most men really only want other men around + a few accomodating good looking women/girls who laugh at their jokes and centre them entirely.

These men have designed this thing actually IN ORDER to make the "wrong sort of girls" feel very upset and uncmfortable. It's entirely deliberate. They do not LIKE those sorts of girls and life would be better all round if they just stayed at home and left the outdoors / mixing with men / going to university stuff to girls who can take a joke for fuck's sake.

NameChangedAgain18 · 19/09/2018 09:37

Is anyone of Twitter that can tweet this thread to some columnists like Sarah Vine? No point bothering with the Guardian mob, as they all think that girls servicing cock is empowering.

BabyTeeth · 19/09/2018 09:37

Charlie
We can do something although it could be that Dig In will play on the parent - child divide (old fashioned sticks) if challenged by parents - a classic grooming method - ‘your mummies and daddies will hate this! Let’s be naughty’. I fear.
