If your teenage daughter had her first week at the University of Sussex this week this is what found in her welcome bag.

A Pot Noodle, A tablet of washing detergent, a sim card and an individual sized portion of instant coffee.

AND

A picture of a woman designed to look like she has spunk dripping down her face to sell toothbrushes. "whether you spit or swallow during your twice daily oral regime..."

She'll also find a drinks night event by the Student union being advertised all over campus. It has a picture of a dead eyed half naked woman laying in an empty bath...which advertises what? Fuck knows.

She will also find a copy of the student newspaper in her bag. On the front cover at the very top of the page is an article entitled "Transphobia and toilets". This is discussing the recent words of University of Sussex philosophy professor Kathleen Stock who dared to very (politely) question some aspects of trans theory.

Your daughter, if disabled, will also be concerned to see that some of the disabled toilets have been declared "for all genders". Which is lovely and inclusive but not ideal if you're disabled and need a wee and need to wait for an able bodied non binary male wearing lipstick to go for a shit first.

She will find that the "This Sussex Girl Can" all women only classes are open to all "women, trans gender people and non binary individuals" so just mixed classes basically .

So far so expected of university in general but what upsets me is that people wanted Kathleen Stock's job for having an opinion. She caused students to feel "unsafe" with her very words, but in a world where women are literally unsafe and sexual assault is endemic in universities, Sussex student union didn't think twice before objectifying its female students. If your employer gave you a goody bag with this card in it you could rightfully be making a formal complaint to your HR department. Why is it appropriate for university?

We can't discuss why it's always a woman advertising drinks, or toothbrushes without discussing women and the group of people who actually deal with the real repercussions of being women. It's a bloody joke. Why don't people care about actual sexism, real life objectification of women.

Send the pictures/ your text to the Brighton Argus? They’ve started to wade in GC waters of late - bet they’d be interested.

BabyTeeth · 19/09/2018 10:43

Errol yes - students would be more likely to be listened to than parents.

SorryAuntLydia · 19/09/2018 11:14

Oh that’s interesting. Yes the DigIn bros sound awful and their website content is a shocker. But pretty sure they won’t have designed the BrushBox advert. What’s funny is it looks like BrushBox is really trying to appeal to parents to take out family subscriptions so maybe ‘joke’ spunk on our daughters’ faces isn’t the look they should be going for?? Talk about marketing fail...

Zeugma · 19/09/2018 11:16

@NothingOnTellyAgain this is their website. The contact address is just a standard 'info@' one. There's basically nothing on the site about the actual people behind it. One of the founders, Christopher Platt, is on LinkedIn and seems to be a serial entrepreneur for whom marketing and monetisation is all.

So it's all calculated, I would imagine, to what they think is a 'kewl' student-type vibe. In order to make lots of money. But is actually grim as hell and offensive.

FWIW, thinking back to myself at 18, a deeply shy person who had a lot of trouble with fitting in, something like that when I started at university would have tipped me over the edge tbh.

scarbados · 19/09/2018 11:17

My only comment is that I've never seen disabled toilets that weren't a single non-gender specific. I've worked in big council office blocks and visited far too many hospitals, but the disabled loo is gender-freee wherever you go. Save your pearl-clutching for a real situation!

Zeugma · 19/09/2018 11:20

But yes, for the avoidance of doubt - the Dig In box includes the toothbrush thing but isn't responsible for the grim packaging for it. The Dig In box is just setting out to make £££££££££ from all those students who represent a fantastic untapped market, as their own slideshow helpfully explains Hmm

JackyHolyoake · 19/09/2018 11:21

Scarbados Dude, take you and your snide comment about "pearl clutching" elsewhere, eh?

scarbados · 19/09/2018 11:21

Addition to my post above - disabled loos are ALWAYS used by able-bodied people who decide they want the extra sapce in the cubicle to put their shopping down, can't be bothered walking the 2 feet further to the Ladies or Gents, or just generally think that they have the right to use disabled facilities even if it inconveniences a disable person. Welcome to my fucking world.

Ifonlyus · 19/09/2018 11:24

Universities need to do more to get a handle on these issues. At the moment, university feels like a less safe place for young women than 20 years ago. How dare they charge £9000 a year and allow my daughter to be presented with such a goody bag.

DukeOfSussex · 19/09/2018 11:24

Your only comment spectacularly misses the point and conveniently doesn't seem to care about sexism directed at women evidenced by the spunkytoothbrush ad.

All disabled toilets are unisex. That means if you are a disabled person of either sex you may use the toilet. One at a time. no issue.

These all gender signs were added so that able bodied people could use them because their "gender" wasn't represented in the male or female bathrooms.

That's why you have a man, a woman, a man/woman?(?) and a disabled user graphic on the sign.

FWIW despite being a woman I haven't got a single set of pearls, only a vagina sorry.

@JackyHolyoake

When someone gets outraged about a situation that's normal and universal, I'll be as snarky as I want. Does the OP give a flying one about this is what all disabled people have to cope with every day or is it meant to be different for students at university? It's acceptable for the rest of us, right?

DukeOfSussex · 19/09/2018 11:27

So you're saying you are a disabled person who finds it infuriating that able bodied people use the disabled bathrooms but thinks it's pearl clutching to expect able bodied non binary 'folk' to use the mens/womens restrooms and not the disabled toilets?

Charliethefeminist · 19/09/2018 11:29

Obviously accessible toilets are for people of both sexes. They are NOT currently for people without disabilities. Scar's comment is just dumb.

xxmarksthespot · 19/09/2018 11:30

Just imagine all the girls opening their welcome boxes and seeing that, that horrible sense of confusion and anger and upset you get when you are publically reminded YET AGAIN that you place on the planet is to service cock.

Yes, and they don't know where to turn and no language to say how awful this is, thanks to the current incarnation of "feminism" that endorses this sort of abuse .

NormalPeople · 19/09/2018 11:31

Any idea what was in the box for boys? Or was that clever double entendre reserved just for the girls?

And people wonder why it's headline news that young girls and women are terribly unhappy and there's a 4000% surge in them wanting to identify away from being female.

Johndoe10 · 19/09/2018 11:31

And this is why hopefully once dds have finished 6th form and done the obigitory travelling thet will take a seat in our buisness. (Hopefully 🙏🙏🙏)

DukeOfSussex · 19/09/2018 11:34

Everyone was given the same bag male or female. My Op was more about how it affects young women differently than the young men who receive this and think it's great.

Hello Brushbox bros

www.brushbox.com/pages/team

Ok there are women on the PR and Social side but management, brand and design is totally bro.

xxmarksthespot · 19/09/2018 11:39

But the fact that there's no society unscarred by male violence suggests it may be innate, which is a depressing thought.

It's innate. Socialisation is the extent to which and the manner in which they express it. We know that left to their own devices we get Lord of the Flies, and worse.

BabyTeeth · 19/09/2018 11:40

Indeed, Brushbox.

This is wrong right?
Datun · 19/09/2018 11:42

5. Girls
It’s unlikely because you’re a filthy fresher but if you have access to a group of young ladies, whether they’re from uni or your homelife, bring them to your flat for pre-drinks one day and most of the fellas you dorm with will want to talk to you.

Two blow jobs a day, and bring your mates for us to objectify. We don't care where you get them from, just bring them here.

I'm dumbfounded.

Completely agree that if they are that woke, let's have a bloke with spunk dripping off his chin. Given to all the boys. We'll soon fucking see how woke you are then.

And yes to Sarah Vine. She doesn't understand feminism, but she gets very heated over this sort of thing.

scarbados

You'll get no argument here over able-bodied people using accessible loos.

Which is why people are even more annoyed that disabled loos are now being offered to able-bodied people if they don't want the sex segregated ones.

BabyTeeth · 19/09/2018 11:45
  • or is it consent?! Who knows in that sexed up Brushbox world!
This is wrong right?
Liz3891 · 19/09/2018 11:58

I literally never thought I'd see the day toothbrushing was sexual.

Bowlofbabelfish · 19/09/2018 12:01

That is hideous. Absolutely hideous.

If Penny Mordaunt wants to look at why there’s a 4000% increase in young girls opting out of of girlhood, that flyer and consent ad is a prime example why.

BabyTeeth · 19/09/2018 12:03

Hang on Bowl I made the link to consent bit!
