If your teenage daughter had her first week at the University of Sussex this week this is what found in her welcome bag.

A Pot Noodle, A tablet of washing detergent, a sim card and an individual sized portion of instant coffee.

AND

A picture of a woman designed to look like she has spunk dripping down her face to sell toothbrushes. "whether you spit or swallow during your twice daily oral regime..."

She'll also find a drinks night event by the Student union being advertised all over campus. It has a picture of a dead eyed half naked woman laying in an empty bath...which advertises what? Fuck knows.

She will also find a copy of the student newspaper in her bag. On the front cover at the very top of the page is an article entitled "Transphobia and toilets". This is discussing the recent words of University of Sussex philosophy professor Kathleen Stock who dared to very (politely) question some aspects of trans theory.

Your daughter, if disabled, will also be concerned to see that some of the disabled toilets have been declared "for all genders". Which is lovely and inclusive but not ideal if you're disabled and need a wee and need to wait for an able bodied non binary male wearing lipstick to go for a shit first.

She will find that the "This Sussex Girl Can" all women only classes are open to all "women, trans gender people and non binary individuals" so just mixed classes basically .

So far so expected of university in general but what upsets me is that people wanted Kathleen Stock's job for having an opinion. She caused students to feel "unsafe" with her very words, but in a world where women are literally unsafe and sexual assault is endemic in universities, Sussex student union didn't think twice before objectifying its female students. If your employer gave you a goody bag with this card in it you could rightfully be making a formal complaint to your HR department. Why is it appropriate for university?

We can't discuss why it's always a woman advertising drinks, or toothbrushes without discussing women and the group of people who actually deal with the real repercussions of being women. It's a bloody joke. Why don't people care about actual sexism, real life objectification of women.

*It goes without saying that there will be many young Muslim women who are unable to make use of certain areas such as locker rooms and bathrooms because they will be confronted by males.

Good God.
I can’t even read a standard fairytale to my daughter without her calling out sexism. (She’s right of course). And then I explain that the story was written a long time ago and things were different.
How depressing that the grownup world that awaits her is actually going backwards.

oatmilk4breakfast · 19/09/2018 07:29

Agree. It’s disgusting that’s just forced on people - like there’s no filter

"Girls you're not here to learn. You're here to give out blowjobs twice a day. Don't forget to floss afterwards."

Ffs. And if this has gone out to boys as well there is going to be a lot of young men with certain expectations of the young women on campus. How many people of both sexes would be internalizing the message that girls must enjoy giving out blowjobs and will do it on a regular basis? Lots of young women will soak up the message that everyone else is doing it, so i have to as well.

Movablefeast · 19/09/2018 07:43

I studied for my BA at Sussex (a long time ago) and have to say I am not remotely surprised that they are handing out bags with this stuff. Just because they were always tragically “right on” and yet always used to give out very confused mixed messages such as this. That is, “We are feminist” but “please take this free stuff sexually objectifying women”.

I was actually amazed and relieved to read that Kathleen Stock received tenture, I thought for sure Sussex would get rid of her, so until this thread Sussex had been going up in my estimation.

iamawoman · 19/09/2018 07:43

The toothpaste promo is offensive on so many levels, these are 18 year old girls this is aimed at, they may be sexually active, but should not be having this material directed at them, the meaning being that girls should be giving blow jobs ...

GulagMilkMonitor · 19/09/2018 07:45

“Welcome to uni, suck a dick”

AsAProfessionalFekko · 19/09/2018 07:45

Well I guess the good thing is that a generation of young women who were swallowing the whole gender dogma whilst at school are now seeing it in action when they are possibly more vulnerable (away from home, in new environment full of other young people, socialising more...).

It may be fine to talk the talk and wave the flat when living at home with mum and dad, but being in an environment where you can't get away from men - not even to have a pee or go to the gym - without worrying about stepping on toes or getting into a row with someone.

Companion42 · 19/09/2018 07:46

This is just grim. Wonder how welcome female students feel?

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 19/09/2018 07:47

From the diginbox site from a blog about breaking the ice.

Unless you’re in junior school, no one has ever realised they’ve made a new best friend sober. That’s just one of the facts of life that you have to deal with. You’ll eventually leave uni and have to try to make friends at work but that will be near impossible until you go out on a Friday evening for Gemma’s leaving party.

I'm a sober alcoholic and this sort of thing infuriates me. Advice like this is why people believe alcohol is essential to their social life and why so many people have booze problems.

I would seriously not want 18 y.o being presented with this as a cool guide to student life.

BiologyMatters · 19/09/2018 07:51

Someone at diginthebox really wants young female students to get drunk and give out blowjobs.

MIdgebabe · 19/09/2018 07:54

Is there any independent collection of statistics related to sexual abuse/ violence broken down by university?

QuizteamBleakley · 19/09/2018 07:57

Dig-in also has a whole section on uni initiation. FFS, if that's what young women are reading and expecting as the norm, it's little wonder my nieces are giving uni a wide berth.

“Welcome to uni, suck a dick”

That did make me laugh. But then I realised that's it's not funny, that's actually the message going out to everyone. How progressive Sussex is.

No TRA has ever had a good response to the question of religious women. Lily Madigan simply replied they need 'education' (in a gulag, perhaps?). We're all told we have to uphold this nonsense belief in gender identity or we're bigots, but they're happy to ignore religious beliefs and let religious women lose access to the public social spaces that were provided for them. Not men who feel feminine.

Prawnofthepatriarchy
Can't believe what I'm reading there, it's shocking.
Who writes this shit?
What a hostile, threatening environment for young women university has become. Someone already said it upthread, but it feels as though we're rapidly regressing back to the atmosphere of a 70s working mens club.
'Get drunk and give oral, oh and make some lovely friends whilst you're at it'. Ugh.

DukeOfSussex · 19/09/2018 08:05

Maybe they can include a sandwich recipe book for the lady types in next year's box?

I demand a man furiously scrubbing his teeth because "She likes that minty zing in the morning". Or a man flossing to get the pubes out Grin

hellandhairnets · 19/09/2018 08:15

I went to Sussex years ago ( the trusty Pot Noodle still making an appearance, I see ) and it was as right-on then as ever but you would never have got something like that appearing without an almighty kickback. That ad is just unacceptable. Who approved it?

DukeOfSussex · 19/09/2018 08:16

Oh that's, that's shocking that is. Three men. Who'd have thunk it.

OP posts:
DukeOfSussex · 19/09/2018 08:17

You don't need a kick back though. It's sex positive. Hey, it's a woman, she's being represented! Wait did you just assume her gender?

Ereshkigal · 19/09/2018 08:17

I wonder if all their "welcome boxes" are the same. As a young woman recovering from a domestically violent relationship when I started uni, I wouldn't have felt very welcome.
