If your teenage daughter had her first week at the University of Sussex this week this is what found in her welcome bag.

A Pot Noodle, A tablet of washing detergent, a sim card and an individual sized portion of instant coffee.

AND

A picture of a woman designed to look like she has spunk dripping down her face to sell toothbrushes. "whether you spit or swallow during your twice daily oral regime..."

She'll also find a drinks night event by the Student union being advertised all over campus. It has a picture of a dead eyed half naked woman laying in an empty bath...which advertises what? Fuck knows.

She will also find a copy of the student newspaper in her bag. On the front cover at the very top of the page is an article entitled "Transphobia and toilets". This is discussing the recent words of University of Sussex philosophy professor Kathleen Stock who dared to very (politely) question some aspects of trans theory.

Your daughter, if disabled, will also be concerned to see that some of the disabled toilets have been declared "for all genders". Which is lovely and inclusive but not ideal if you're disabled and need a wee and need to wait for an able bodied non binary male wearing lipstick to go for a shit first.

She will find that the "This Sussex Girl Can" all women only classes are open to all "women, trans gender people and non binary individuals" so just mixed classes basically .

So far so expected of university in general but what upsets me is that people wanted Kathleen Stock's job for having an opinion. She caused students to feel "unsafe" with her very words, but in a world where women are literally unsafe and sexual assault is endemic in universities, Sussex student union didn't think twice before objectifying its female students. If your employer gave you a goody bag with this card in it you could rightfully be making a formal complaint to your HR department. Why is it appropriate for university?

We can't discuss why it's always a woman advertising drinks, or toothbrushes without discussing women and the group of people who actually deal with the real repercussions of being women. It's a bloody joke. Why don't people care about actual sexism, real life objectification of women.

Why always this menzneedy derail?

This thread is about women not menwomen actual women, the ones being abused by the objectifying welcome pack in 2018. We women don't like it, we don't agree with the pornification of teenagers, we are protesting against it. Know your place men.

stillathing · 20/09/2018 15:13

Ohhh. You mean she's not going to come back and explain how science has moved on? I paused a fairly good podcast for this.

gendercritter · 20/09/2018 15:19

Oh no, no, no. Cringe. Don't tell people that was you.

Sheesh. Embarrassing. I actually genuinely feel sorry for you now. Women are collateral damage in all of this and you've just made yourself look lile a right turkey

gendercritter · 20/09/2018 15:19

*like

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 20/09/2018 15:20

Anyway

They are a plopper

I've no time for ploppers

Bowlofbabelfish · 20/09/2018 15:22

But the science!

Someone has found an extra sex on top of the two we have and I need to tell the Nobel committee!

Won’t someone tell me the science..? No? Oh I’m sad now.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 20/09/2018 15:24

I love it when someone says the science word and then bowl turns up

Its a bit like a less scary version of the candyman

gendercritter · 20/09/2018 15:25

Ha! Me too. Even if Bowl hasn't got the memo that it's 2018 and all the science has changed Sad

OrchidInTheSun · 20/09/2018 15:28

Haha - that's exactly what it's like Rufus Grin

Charliethefeminist · 20/09/2018 15:28

I quite like 'I braved mumsnet and this is what happened' types

Makes me think of a room full of indulgent relatives placidly watching a five-year-old playing a dramatic cops and robbers game complete with supremely well-acted violent death.

Bowlofbabelfish · 20/09/2018 15:30

Its a bit like a less scary version of the candyman

When you say science it’s like an invocation

They don’t want to play... sad face.

DukeOfSussex · 20/09/2018 15:36

I have friends in her classes/on her course that feel unsafe"

My lord, what has she done to them? Surely not disagreed. Why that's literal violence.

Sussex University let senior lecturer continue teaching after he beat up student girlfriend

Where as that^ is just boring old violence violence. How do you think the women in his classes felt?

Btw someone from Huffpost wrote to me asking if they could speak about this story. I said no because I fear doxxing and violence. I'd like to be braver but I have children to worry about, this means that I can't discuss something that matters to me. Literal violence is what happens to women daily. You're far safer as a transwoman than a woman. That's statistics. That's true.

This Sussex Girl Can is a campaign that I have been involved in, which aims to get more women into sport at the university

I know women with vaginas are very boring but you do realise that women's sports are one of the main reasons so many women become gender critical? I'd ask you "to do some research" but I doubt you will.

You are going to look back at posting this one day and cringe. Really, I'm so embarrassed for you. This little corner of Mumsnet is home to academics, lawyers, doctors, scientists, journalists, politicians ...the list goes on and on. The posts here amount to hours and hours and hours of considered research, discussion and analysis of the trans debate and Mumsnet is generally very left-wing. You are a sneeze away from having graduated and yet you've come here to put us on the right path?

God I wanna high five you so hard right now.

Did the Sussex Uni Feminist Society attend NUS training by any chance?

DukeOfSussex · 20/09/2018 15:45

It was originally complained about on mumsnet & unfortunately they tarnished their valid complaint of misogyny by being transphobic.

So I joined mumsnet and responded.

Why oh why do they all sound like they work for Buzzfeed.

"This millennial read a Mumsnet post and you own't believe what happened next"*

  • I am technically a millennial before any angry millennials feel the need to join MN to tell me I'm responsible for everything bad that ever happened.

Good grief! Back to the issue, rather than the pompous plopper.

What's so worrying is that men can actually do this stuff and that no one in the whole chain - pitching it, design, the text, printing, packaging, posting, filling goody bags has looked at it and said, "hold on a minute".

It just shows the extent to which the porn culture and misogynistic views of women have such a grasp. And evidently how powerless those working at Brushbox are if they couldn't point out the awfulness of this (I am assuming that women and men with children actually work in the place?) Must be a vile company to work for as this evidently represents their corporate values.
